Come along as I have a look at this 2014 Jeep Compass that was towed in with a flashing throttle light, engine light and a customer complaint that it won't move! I found several codes P2101, P2110, P2112, and a P2118. Hmmm could this really be a no parts required fix?

The evap system us a very sensitive system. Keeping the system clean in the positive crankcase ventilation is preventive maintenance.

i just don't like these ETM's. i had one on a Volvo that used 2 sliding potentiometers to convey throttle position. 2 forcredundancy i guess.
During normal cruise the throttle uses the same range of opening all the time.
Those potentiometer tracks had worn away in some places to the point that there was no proper throttle control any longer. the engine would start to vibrate and jerk as the throttle blade would vary position. very annoying. And kinda dangerous IMO
i discovered a Chinesium kit to modify that ETM to where those pot meters were eliminated and replaced by magnetic control. Fixid it!
Why the heck did Magneti-Marelli not make it that way from the get-go is beyond me.
A customer at the auto store stated he had the same issues. Sometimes it would throw the same codes.

These new vehicles are getting idiotically over complicated with whiz bang electronics.
I've never owned a vehicle that did not have a throttle controlled by a cable, with stiff dual return springs and my next one is going to have a points type ignition, even if I have to pay a premium to own an old one.
I am a serious believer in the KISS rule…
I'm guessing too that the heat from the engine might play a role in expansion where the throttle sticks less after things warm up. Nice job going right to the problem and trying not to fire off the parts cannon.

The throttle body needs replacing. The nylon gears inside the housing have worn and the throttle plate dithers. The issue isn't electronic, it's mechanical.

Your "forced idle" code was the PCM cutting spark on random cylinders to "force" the idle speed down as it was too high in neutral. When you put it in drive idle speed dropped to within limits. The 0% throttle test is usually at key on/engine off before start up. I had a throttle cable bind up on an "old school" gm 3800 V6 many years ago. Not fun turning a corner in heavy traffic and had to key off to avoid a crash…… unless you are on a motorcycle, the throttle cable only opens the throttle, it does NOT close the throttle! ( motorcycle has 2 cables, 1 to open and 1 to close)
Guess the Compass was pointing south to South Main Auto.
Also, adding some more thoughts to the Bluetooth throttle, I think that it would probably lose communication 99% of the time. I walk ten feet away from my stereo on BT with my phone in my pocket and get a bad signal, not to mention that my 10 year old laptop rarely ever connects to the same Azultooth. What's even funnier is that I walked 3 miles away from a Chinesium portable speaker and the signal never quit even once.
To be honest though, I think there was some truth to Toyota's throttle cables going WOT from corrosion. My Toyota is 22 years old currently and had the throttle cable recalled, since then the assembly has gotten a touch of corrosion from the salty winters and I can see where a poor quality assembly could fail. I don't believe every model was affected the same way, maybe your suggestion of user error i.e. the floor mats was part of the blame.
Never push open by hand an electronic throttle body to clean it. I learned that the hard way. Destroyed it and got a replacement which fixed the throttle light on a Jeep Commander Hemi 5.7.
Car diagnostics would be so much easier instead of codes the car just makes an Eric O poopy face.
To be commended. I feel most shops would have replaced the throttle body, more money in the back pocket. Usually scheduled tune-ups would include a throttle body clean or induction cleaning. Great video! Shows that not all repairs need a parts store. I hope the new generation of techs are watching and learning

Always a learning experience here, I epically fail with the newer computer cars. I miss the days of my youth, no computers, just a points distributor, carburetor etc, no computer crap. Those I can fix. Obd1 I have luck with. OBD2 not so much. Threw a bunch of cash at a P0172 rich code and I think the TCM shorted and blew the eatx 20 amp fuse in a 2002 Neon SE. Now my daily is dead. F me.😬 My diag skills suck, and the parts cannon emptied my wallet.

I’m still early in the video, but the feeling of misfiring when sitting in idle in park after you had the throttle limp mode is because the ECM is limiting the engine speed down to 1500rpm by shutting off injectors. When the throttle hits limp mode, it will shut the power to the throttle motor off and the throttle will sit at about 10-15% open. When you were pushing the throttle and it revved up to like 2500rpm from 1500rpm, the only thing that was changing on the engine was re-enabling all the fuel injectors (and maybe changing ignition timing). The throttle body didn’t move at all, because the power to it was shut off. It would feel like it smoothed out when you shifted into gear because the additional load of the transmission being in gear was enough for it to be able to re-enable the injector(s) it was turning off and still stay within the rpm range that it was happy with.
i don’t always fiddle with things but when i do i do it in the style of charlie daniels lol

Dr. O another great video as usual. Wish you would have demonstrated more in depth on how you were manipulating the throttle body motors by just attaching jumpers to the battery.
We've learned a couple of things, don't buy a Chrysler product should rate near the top. Cars were better when a rod and a cotter pin controlled the throttle. Oh yeah. and don't live in New York (smile).

Got my Black Hoodie SMA, love it. I have this issue with my Escalade EXT, they say it needs to be rewired to the computer. I think I'm going to try that GUNK first. $600.00 dollar repair.
That'll be the day when all of the new tech you can throw at one of these things can out smart some genuine crud. This customer must be one of your loyal followers and didn't go the parts cannon route first. You got lucky there and the been there done that experience helps too! Good vid. Besides the humor one reason I watch is I'm fairly decent with older carbureted engines and a fair amount of their issues. But what they're putting out these days and the service data that they publish for it (1) you need a computer science and scan tool degree and (2) don't forget the subscriptions you pay extra for.

Been wondering about this now that I have a modern throttle by wire car. My last car had a cable throttle and I could feel in the pedal when the throttle plate was getting stuck & that it was time to clean the throttle body.

PS. Putting the throttle cable back is no guarantee of it never getting stuck. I've seen enough stuck throttle cables to know that.

Hi Eric and the Lovely Mrs.O., Zep used to make a fantastic carburetor cleaner, maybe they still do I don't know, the only time I came across it was at work. We got it thru a ZEP distributor. ZEP sells cleaning products thru The Depot but no carb cleaner. I thought the ZEP stuff smells like and works as good as Berkbile 2+2. It will also make your brain run out your ears, but it really works well. that,s all for now, bye bye!

Hey Eric. How's it going? I noticed in a few of your videos, that you've been plugging the Astro tools from Amazon. I started to follow your lead with regards to that,and have, unfortunately, come to find out that their tools are really pricey, compared to other vendors on Amazon, and the quality of said tools are extremely poor. I have purchased a digital tire inflator, which arrived touched up on the handle with a sharpie marker, did not seal on valve stems well at all,and is now broken. The $70 wirelessly charging flashlight, that you also use, turned out to be complete garbage as well, and among a variety of hand tools, service kits, etc. All junk. I have had greater value and success from Walmart's line of Hyper Tough tools. Do you have any similar feedback on their products?
Yes you can spend the time to find out exactly what the problem is. Or you can fix it and be 90% sure it is fixed and save the customer money to maybe get the breaks fixed, I like your way.
Was having a similar problem with my 2003 Chevy S10 with the lil 2.2 liter engine. Cleaned the throttle body and WaLa it's been running good ever since. Thanks for the help.
Very unprofessional, here in the trailer shop we always use the proper glad hand adapters to air up the trailer brake pots. You got alot to learn
