In this video I have a look at a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was towed in from another shop as a no start, no crank. It doesn't take long to determine that the ECM is at fault and will need a new one. -Enjoy!

My 2005 Grand cherokee is doing the same thing. Scotty Kilmer says that there is a known issue with the Integrated Power Module and replacing that is a solution for these kinds of things…so it looks like it's a $600+ fix either way!

Great info! I understand that you are a busy man but was hoping that you might be able to answer a question for me. Got a no crank, no start. Starter only clicks once. Starter and battery are good. All power, ground, starter, ignition and ASD circuits are good. Also no issue with SKIM light. Would a bad PCM or SKIM cause only a single click from starter? This is on a 2003 Laredo 4.0L.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kirby Schneider says:

    Great job, per usual!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joesep Spindel says:

can you program a different ECM with the vin and milage and leave the SKIM "inactive". before getting anywhere near the vehicle with it, can you remove the skim module out of the steering column and then put everything back together. You can then start the jeep without a chipped key and it will run. The little "no key" light on the dash will come on, but the jeep will run without the security system being active. Will this eliminate the need for a SKIM module and a chipped key? Keys go bad, modules go bad, people can't use their vehicles and most get screwed by dealerships. Will leaving the security system inactive and leaving out the module and chipped key enable you to not ever need a chipped key or skim module ever again? Then just pull the bulb for the key light and be done with it.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kamillo P. says:

Hello Sir. Just wondering why you have strated investigation from ASD relay, because of scaning tool indication or you checked this before ? The easiest way with that symptoms would be to check SM relay and the signals both from Ingition switch(+) and powertrain control module(-).BTW I just realized that 2006 WK 3.7 has different relays locations. BEst Regards and thanks for the good turtorial.

Hey Eric i've just found your channel and i am loving it!

I'm from the UK and i have always wondered why American engines seem to be so low powered considering how enormous a lot of them are. For example, i have a Lotus Elise from 1999 with a relatively boring 1.8 inline 4 DOHC making 150BHP(this is pretty standard for equivalent European engines), which is only 60BHP less than the 3.7 V6 in this Jeep (I noticed the scan tool Eric was using stated this Jeep has 210BHP). I did the maths and if my engine was scaled up to 3700cc it would have 308BHP. I've noticed this seems to be the way with a lot of American engines…not having a dig, just pondering – I'd be interested if anyone can enlighten me ๐Ÿ™‚

05 grand cherokee 5.7 here idler pulley flew off on the highway and it overheated towed it home next day I'm tryna start it without the belt just for a minute so i can hear if the engine is still good but it won't crack , could it be the auto shut down relay cuz it heated?
Edit: i just noticed where the ECM is located i think it might have got soaked with coolant when it overheated and the coolant splashed out the resivor I'm screwed now

I currently have a problem where my 05 jeep grand Cherokee does not want to start after driving it many times in warm weathers. When I drive around for 20 min then park, it won't start back up. I had to replace starter since it gotten bad. I Do not have a -CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON- not sure if the ecm is the problem either is the fuel pump, any clue what could possibly be the problem?

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MM Reporter says:

You are a true genius at analyzing these problems. I envy your depth of knowledge.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Conway says:

I've had all these same issues with my 2006 grand cherokee. First time I switched out the relay that worked. Two weeks later no start, tried the relay switch again, did not work. Watched a few you tube videos and tried the jiggle the wires connecting to the solenoid. That worked. Few weeks later no start same issue. Got it towed and they told me it was the starter. They replaced the starter and I had no issue for 2 months. Same problem, Dash lights up like a christmas tree and no start. Towed it back to the place that put the starter in and they called the next day saying it started and they could not find an issue with it. Ran for another 5 months good and then stopped for gas and when I went to start it nothing. Messed with the relays the wires etc, tried putting it in drive and still no start. Left it right where it died and the mechanic there told me it was a bad starter. I explained to him that the starter was under a year old and he told me the starter was definitely done and that he would check around. Turns out their was a short in the wiring from the solenoid to the ignition. He replaced that and put another starter in. He explained that the short was frying the solenoid which in and of itself would not be expensive but in this model the solenoid was part of the starter part and I had to get them both together. Turns out he was right and the car ran for two years more with no issues starting. 6 months ago same thing. Dash lights up no crank just a click and can't get it started trying all the same things I used to. This time it was just a battery and the battery was 6 years old so I counted myself lucky until, a month after replacing the battery the car would not start. The difference this time is I would hit the unlock security button, lights would go on, dash would riing and beep like normal, but as soon as I turned the ignition everything went black. No click no lights nothing. So the guy who replace the battery came and got the jeep, spent 5 days with it, and could not find anything wrong. Said the battery was probably just low but the alternator was good and asked if I left a light on. I didn't think so but sure it's possible. Long as its starting now I drove off and thanked him for the clean bill of health. Two days later same thing. Drove to the market and when I cam out turned the key, everything normal until I try to start and goes completely black again. A random guy at the market tells me, the computer is shut down. Disconnect the battery and reconnect it and you should be good. He was right. Car started up fine. So it's happened two more times and i've disconnected the battery and it's started up fine. By resetting the computer. So My issue is, I've got to figure out what is shutting down the computer when I turn the key. I think you may have solved the problem. You mentioned the 02 sensor being in the same circuit as the auto shut down. Turns out I've had a check engine light on for a few months and auto zone pulled up the codes and said it was an o2 sensor. They also said it was fine to drive because it would only affect the gas mileage. But my instincts are that the 02 sensor being bad is causing the ecu to shut down. It would make sense because the codes get reset when you disconnect the battery and it starts. I've noticed that it does not have an issue starting until after the check engine for the sensor comes back on. Sorry for the life story but perhaps this will help someone. Why the guy who replaced the battery and supposedly did an electrical diagnostic did not know this is beyond me. I'll let you know if replacing the 02 sensor solves the issue.

But it will start when it seemed to cools down. If you could help with some things to check then i would appreciate it. No code's or check engine light. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜ž
