In this video we take a look at a Jeep Liberty 3.7 that was purchased from an auction and then towed into the shop from a local dealer. You could get the engine to start on occasion but when you did it had a lot of mechanical engine noise and would not idle. Let's see what we find. -Enjoy!

Love your break down on your diagnostic thinking, its like a master class of a who done it for engines. My only wish would be to see a properly working cylinder go through its paces to show a comparison. I guess I could imagine what it would be but the thought went through my brain when I saw the one with the sticking exhaust valve. Love your video's , I honestly think your prescribe to the Kiss method, you take a complex situation and break it down so dumb guys like myself can catch up to your thinking. Thank you. It gives me hope that some day because you can do it, so could I.

I know this is a older video, and my question might not have anything to do with this video .. and not sure if i had asked before. But here goes .. Ever do a engine swap, from a 2005 3.7 L liberty to a 2004 Liberty Limited >? Im getting ready to do that, see my 05 lib frame broke and its a none repair. so pulling the motor out and putting it in a 2004 lib limited .. I have heard i will have to change out the Cam gear sprocket due to timing issue`s or i would have to swap brains.. How true is this, being how both motors are 3.7L . being how they are both 3.7L same engines. i am hoping it a easy swap over and not have to doing anything in the way of opening up the top end, or change the brains out … Any advice

Have a 2004 liberty 3.7 I’ve been trying to fix . My whole passenger side is misfiring . I changed coils , fuel injector seals , o2s and spark plugs . Only codes I’m getting is sensor 2 bank 1 voltage high and multiple cylinder misfire . Do you think changing the crank and camshaft will fix it ?

Sounds familiar. 12 years ago, while 8 degrees outside, my 4.7L Ram 1500 started overheating after 1 mile from being started. As soon as I pulled over, the coolant expanded enough to reach the pump and the temp came down immediately. Added coolant and made several stop and start drives over several hours. When I got home, I parked it in the road as someone was in my driveway. Later, I went to move it to the driveway and it was running horribly and making popping sounds in the manifold. Compression check was showing strange results on the left side. Pulled the cover and an exhaust rocker arm had fallen off. Popped it back in with a wrench. I'm not sure why it only became a problem after several drive cycles but it's been 12 years and I've never had a problem since. The root cause of the problems was a cracked radiator caused by a bad overflow cap causing too much pressure for the plastic radiator sides to handle. The radiator hoses blown up like balloons helped with the diagnosis.

If you also put a pressure transducer in the intake manifold, you can learn more about valve problems by viewing the intake manifold pressures and vacuums.

Oh NGK sparkplugs they are boring

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 8avexp says:

My '88 Jeep Cherokee came with Champion spark plugs. One piece of advice I've gotten concerning spark plugs is, if it didn't come on the car from the factory, don't use it.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sorefoot says:

I know this comment is old and probably won’t get be seen by anyone but couldn’t you just take the spark plug out of one of the cylinders you think the exhaust is stuck on (giving the exhaust a path out) and then re-run relative compression and see if you amp draw on the high cylinders goes down? Obviously the in cylinder test is more definitive but this seems like it would work for someone that doesn’t have a pressure transducer.

“Like jeeps sometimes do!” LOL. You are not kidding. Thank you so much for your videos. This was great information regarding firing order, exhaust, and compression. I like to understand how it works. Working on my daughters 07 Commander with 202k miles. It has the 3.7 like this liberty in the video. Nice addition to my Jeep videos.
