In this video I have a look at a customers Jeep Wrangler with the big 3.6 that has a customer complaint that the turn signal works until you turn on the headlights. At that point the light goes out completely. Sounds like a typical Chrysler/Jeep bad ground to me 😏

2012 Jeep or Wrangler that's the Sahara It's got an awesome sticker on the back too. Let me tell you right there, that's some funny stuff, right? Only because it's true. Uh, what do you guys bring it here for? Oh, the left front turn signal evidently goes out when you turn on the lights. so we're gonna kick on the fourways and we can see.
We got the blinkers in there I've got the blinker right there. that blinker right there. so that's all good and we come up here. We've got the blinker there, the blinker there, but you can see the one on the left of the vehicle.
It's a wee bit dimmer and it goes out when you turn on. he's at the headlights. But when you turn on the marker lights little glove and we all know why. Because Chrysler So I turn that into Market lights in the latest out.
So what's that? Tell us? I'll tell you what it tells us, tells us it it's background. I Assume I assume it has a background and I assume that because um, I can only imagine that somebody probably already tried to put a bulb in it I would think so. let's have a look-see and see if that's the case. So this is kind of Handy where that light is? huh? Let me, uh, give us a ground here with our test lights.
see if there's anything out here that's not rusted. Story of my life right there. All right. So I Hooked on the EBS module, we got our this is a low current test light 150 milliamps maybe Now we don't even need a diagram because we have three wires.
I'm assuming black is ground, this is going to be marker light, turn signal or vice versa one or the other. So let's just probe into it. Now we should have a blinking light on the turn signal which is that one. Well, we got it first try.
Huh? Can You guys see that? So that is our turn signal wire. Now my assumption is that when we probe the ground, we're also going to have a blanky light and we do so. and that's kind of how silly this video is. So I've probed into the blackware and we have you know current flowing through that that hasn't you know found itself to ground yet? and then we'll go into the marker light and we have nothing.
Everything's cool there, but we can see our ground circuit. Hope you guys can see that is is blinking. So I guess I can prove it to you. Another way we can hook a jumper wire to it or what we can do is we can look at a wiring diagram and see where this goes because we know a is a Chrysler B All their grounds suck and C they usually fail right at the terminating point of the eyelet.
So let's look on the diagram and see where the ground islet is for this left front light. Okay, when it does a diagram, gosh, I Need glasses? Let's see left front side marker. Okay, so that's this one here. Oh it's not depicted as a bulb, it's just a square box that makes sense.
left front part turn so it has a ground which is black. the white with green wire which is turn signal in the white with light green which is your indicator light. So it's this. this one right here and you guys can see the ground goes down there and that is ground One Zero Two G102 near right headlamp assembly and it looks like there's a bunch of grounds one two, three, four at least that are shown in here in this picture. There's four four separate grounds that go to G102, which in typical Chrysler fashion I'm sure there's a lot more in that. Let's go see if we can find it. Oh, would that be? Wouldn't that be nice if it's this one right here? Do you? 102? Let me. um that is the right headlight assembly and that is a nice crusty one with a whole bunch of wires going to it.
But I See Okay, that's that's a connector. Let me see about getting this out of here so we can have a little luxie and uh, see what we see. Foreign? Foreign. Oh now we can see.
Oh girl Crusty! Krusty All right, we're not even gonna test it. We're going to take a big fat guess. Based on a lifetime of experience, we could find the individual wire, but there's more than four going into that. Mia See if it can't shift you folks around where you can see, we'll tear it off apart.
We'll put some eyelets on it I'm sure everybody will be happy in the end. All right, that's perfect. Full there. Let me go.
shut off the four ways there. Let us see what we've got here with some crusty, very crusty. the Krusty Crab Lady Let's open that up I need to maintain as much wire as we can so we'll we'll open this up a little bit here. Oh easy like that.
Give her just a couple of flicks and a screw and a twist and turn here. Yeah, let them turn to dust as they often do I Don't know why Chrysler does this, but a big fan of GM and all the ground wires into one little spot. so that's why I prefer coming to fix these instead of doing like an overlay or just adding a ground down there near the light just because when one of these items goes, the problem is other ones usually are not far behind it. Get out our pocket knife here.
can't tell if they're all fused together. A little tug, we got one. We got one separated from the group. Let me, uh, chop it off.
There looks like there's some more there. There's four and that's dog bringing out the dog. That one maybe I'll Honky Tonk there. So there are four little wires and one big Jabroni one two, three four five.
We got five little wires. So five little wires and one big. Honker Let me go get some eyelets and we'll get them all resoldered, crimped. We'll crimple a cider.
We'll do everything. Try to tick everybody's box the best that we can have a see what we can do. I Think first thing first. the first thing.

Let's make everybody equal. 2023 Okay, let's do some stripping. What? what? Stripping? Yes Ma'am no I'm just watching the stripper. You wanna come see? You can bring them over here. It's not very exciting though. These people are watching it though. They're getting what they paid for though. Let's see: I'm half blind trying to do this.

We got a nice flat crimp on it now to be assured that we have a great connection. We're gonna solder it to Sol D E r Here comes the triggers. I'm gonna be using some 60 40 flux core. Breathing in that smoke deep.
Don't breathe it. It's wet folks. You breathe this in, you'll act like me. Ain't nobody? Want that? Now we must let it cool and then we can crimp over the other end here that goes on the wire.
It's gonna be like it's gonna be like Factory Folks got the patience of a three-year-old Hang on to it with that and then we're going to give her a little crimp down around here. I Don't think you have to go full gorilla with this portion of it. just like baby gorilla. Fold that around there.
I'll get these. We'll set them on a medium gorilla type setting. Squeeze this direction. Hey guy, give him a squeeze there.
Boom There it is folks. Be sure. be sure to go in the comments and explain in detail how this is an improper fix obviously. but that's okay. that's in 2012 or 13. So you know what that means. It's almost on hospice. Hey, there goes again.

I just checked my wheel hubs yesterday and with removing the hub I didn't have to get the air hammer out because it just feel out from the last tech whole installed them the right way never have I had this happen on a new york truck with 245k miles on it thanks last tech

The biggest question here is, who knew there is a Wrangler driver out there who actually uses turn signals?
I laugh at the fact we are in 2023 and yet most auto manufacturers insist on continuing use of incandescent lamps. Nothing more annoying on a modern car than the dashboard nag continue to say there's a lamp out despite replacing all with LED. OH, but for an additional "value added" upsell you can get a magic "trick" to convince the computer into thinking you still use incandescent.
Please find my 364 point explanation of why this fix is incorrect. It`s best if read at bedtime. 😁

The solder flux is usually pine rosin, Rosin Pine Resin Colophony. The fumes will not harm you, in fact, generally a pretty nice fragrance… if rosin flux..

Nice fix. That eyelet will definitely outlast that jeep by 50 years. As for adding heat shrink? it will only collect the water and keep the eyelet wet, aiding its future demise.

always check to see the correct bulbs are in place … 1st…. Seen wrong lamps installed by someone. That screws up the running or directional. Then wiring …. 6 out of 10 times.

I own this one. 2013JK2D and have taken apart the whole Jeep about 3 times so far but I have not fixed that one yet. Thanks for showing me yet another fix and yes I solder all mine back as well. I will say that after I have replaced the suspension, The D30, the shocks, the brakes with a Big brake kit, the control arms with core4x4 HD, The drive shafts, The draglink, the tie rod and trackbar with Steersmarts 1.5 ton HD, The steering with PSC Big bore steering box, the plastic bumpers, ALL the cheap ass lights with JW Speakers, The Radiator, hoses, plugs etc.. the tires and rims and too many other little things to list. The Jeep is perfect now. Runs like a well balanced top. Only cost me about another 15K+ on top of the price of the Jeep. At least mine didn't have the rocker arm issue.
That terminal almost looked like you could've used a spark plug wire crimper on it.

Yep yep. My local high-volume car wash just put up a sign that they no longer accept manual transmission cars. I guess it's a lost art like writing in cursif. I have an MT Lexus IS250 and found a site that sells similar stickers. "The Manual Gearbox Preservation Society". Oh… and finally you have a "real" jeep in the shop sir it is a welcome change.. "noice" =)

Nice work! Cut her back to good copper wire, nice new crimp connector, crimp, solder, Fluid Film coat – PRIMO! GM Grounds suck too. I always wire brush them to bare metal, too. But certainly not the technician you are.

Great info to know Eric and a great fix…. I own a 2018 Wrangler so this may come in handy some day. Luckily I don’t live in the rust belt so mine may never get to that point. My 2010 that I got rid of in 18 never did. Anyway, thanks for sharing something That I Might be able to do….
I have found for soldering the large lug, if you add liquid flux to the wire and lug, the solder will flow quicker, more evenly and remove more oxidation. However, I use a high wattage electric temperature controlled soldering station which allows me to set the proper soldering temperature without burning off the applied flux (I think your flame torch would just burn off the liquid flux). Then solder with a wire solder that has a compatible flux to the liquid flux applied. Also, Tin/Lead Eutectic solder (63/37 not 60/40) virtually eliminates the chance of a cold solder joint. For example use:
Solder Wire: Kester Sn63Pb37, Flux 285, Dia. 0.031 inch, Series 66 3.3% Flux Content, Part# 2463379710.
Solder Liquid Flux: Kester 186-18 (which is compatible with 285 wire solder flux). The 186-18 gives exceptional cleaning (oxidation removal) as an evolution from the Kester 186 no clean RMA flux, which was already a very good product. The only draw back to Kester liquid flux is you have to purchase in a minimum of a gallon.
The above is a very good RMA (no clean) combination (ROL0) and can be used to repair electronic control modules (obviously with smaller diameter solder wire) in addition to wire soldering repairs, compatible with ROL0 type Tacky Flux (Kester TSF-6522 for example). So if you do PCB repairs you have the option to use either the liquid or the tacky flux depending on the nature of the repair.
Fine job, Eric! It’ll last another 10 years.
Cool Jeep… biggest problem with Jeep is that Chrysler owns it. I've got a 96 Cherokee, bet car I've ever had, but of course while it was a Chrysler product it's more AMC than Chrysler.
And yes, I've run into a few ground problems over the years. I'll blame them on Chrysler, but the Jeep IS over 25 years old with well over half a million miles on it so I can't fuss too much.
And that "I found your problem lady", I'm in IT and support computers in a factory. Often when I find the cause of a problem I'll say something like "Lkte the guy on YouTube says, "I think I found your problem lady".

I think it was an expert repair and well done… BUT… I would have used a touch of flux to help the solder (Saw-Durr) flow better. I like to put a touch down in the connector before I fit and press the wires into place. Just give me a feeling of 100% right. I know it's near the end of it rusty run but still I would have done it if for no other reason to show the proper way. I may have shown what you did on treating the side marker lamp sockets – if you did use any "treatment" to stop the krusties on those terms. I have loved the years of watching your channel – Thank You. Bobby

No Crank No Spark… 1998 Dodge Caravan sport, 3.3 liter. I have power on the 10 amp starter fuse when the key is turned to start, I have constant power at the starter relay, my starter is Brand New and will crank when I connect power directly to the orange wire at the starter…My Starter will not crank when I try to jump the relay, my horn will not beep when I jump the horn relay…Also, I have no power at the Coil Pack when using a test light even when the key is in the start position. Any Thoughts where to go next?
My last manual transmission car was a 1929 Chrysler. I doubt most could even figure out how to start it, never mind the non-synchromesh transmission.

I did a lot of wiring on salt water boats. The most long-lived connections I made were crimped, soldered, then sealed with the heat-shrink tube that had the hot glue type sealer in it.

Hey lady! Are you healthy? You doing ok? Have a roof over your head and food on the table? Chill out then. I have cancer, heart failure with clotting in one chamber, myalgia. The last thing I can be worried about is what gender someone is kindly and generically referencing viewers by. I might be worried that the two inspectors of our house missed the water ingress and we have an unusable basement. The motor to the oil heater broke and can't afford to fix it as something is up with the electric that has our bill 2-3x higher than the neighbors for no apparent reason. Our new fridge is breaking as well as our new washer and dryers. One of the burners of the stove melted the glass top and no longer have one of the big ones to use for cooking. Dishwasher broke. Deck rotted out. I let family members use my car and last I drove it, the oil was a quart low, the A/C decided to smoke/partially lock up and burn the belt or something; father backed into it with a lawnmower then ran in the back of someone, was still drivable until they managed to break the shifter off the level connecting to the transmission. And I could go on with a lot more stupid things that have plagued me and my family the last several years.
So lady, if he says 'boys' … just realize some people in the world have a little more to worry about so try to have some perspective. I'm almost certain you wouldn't want to trade places with my family just to hear people say 'boys and girls' instead. Just make sure the personhole covers in the street are secure (George Carlin joke reference)!

Before your appointment with the optometrist, you should know that standard trifocals don't work well under a car, and they are poor for welding and cutting, too. The reason is they rely on the assumption that when you're looking at something up close, you're looking down. Under the lift, you're looking up, not down! It's awkward to find a way to move your head into a position to look down on everything, and I find them confusing while welding. You want something closer to safety readers for work, and maybe trifocals when you're not working. Trifocals can be designed to work well for computer use, which might be a suboptimal compromise.
I was waiting for the FluidFilm and boom there it is!
Eric. As a 50+ year electronic Tech, you used your strippers wrong. One side is flat & one side has a taper. Always use the flat side toward thew end of the wire. Strips much easier. Tapered side make the insulation compress against the wire like a brake caliper & requires much more force to strip it. You are still TOPS in my book!!
And yet another Well Built Car from Mexico they do Not want to send them Any thing TOO complex and there in is the reasoning for Chrysler's poor Design for the wiring

As a soldering expert who has a soldering iron and solder somewhere in a storage tub in the closet, I can tell you right now, that rework with da sheep dip is going to bahhhh just fine.
Speaking of electrical, I had some issues with a fern made scooter and it's turn signals, no flash on one side, and hyper flash the other side. Turns out that when you insert a light bulb in those cheap sockets, there is a high probability of bending the side ground terminal away from the side and down into the power terminal in the base. Thus resulting in bad flashy flashy.
The bad flashy biz can also be caused by pushing in the ultra cheap and poorly designed bullet electrical connectors too far, thus resulting in no electron flow. Don't power push them like a bighorn sheep. Be gentle.
And changing over to LED bulbs will also necessitate a replacement of the flasher relay that is more LED friendly. It doesn't do any good to simply tell your flasher unit that it identifies as LED friendly now.
Had a vehicle with a manual transmission in to change the front wheel bearings.
After I was done, I tought our 14 year old daughter how to drive it in about 15 minutes. She only stalled it once. I got my last comment pulled down or I'd post a link about the Saturn Vue and what else I found after putting the wheel bearings. It's a short on my channel.

I cannot understand why, on Gods green earth, Asian cars have much more reliable electrical system vs. their US counterparts. Stuff like this Chrysler should have been solved decades ago. I remember when the first Honda Civic came out in the 70's, the wiring was immaculate.

can we all start a trend / fashion …. ( as I have done to my Honda ) ….. to have a complete set of replacement light bulbs in the trunk / glove-box ….. for the same reason you have a spare tyre ….. you have then when they are needed … or when someone else does
Ha ! . . . Wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes if you had SODDERED it. But will last forever now you have correctly SOLDERED it.
If you were to start hacking the harness and adding grounds and not repairing the actual bad ground, that would make you a hack. And you aren't a hack. I mean, other than your personal vehicles.
