I never knew there were seatbelt pretensioners. Learned something new today. Have a great day.

where did you learn all of this, amazing…

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Day says:

I want to give you an A+ for you knowing the wiring systems

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars FLYBOY7898 says:

What if those mini explosives are directed in the wrong direction. Ejection seat?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alexia Addictiv-ink says:

Well said about the truck airbag fire. Nothing is fool-proof

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DerGameplayDJ says:

Forget about not moving the seats. Shouldn't you disconnect the battery whenever you work on anything related to the airbag or other explosives?
No, I'm not complaining, I'm just worried about your safety.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars GlossyLake says:

I’m amazed that I was able to tell this was an F159 by the thumbnail.
I have the same truck so I’m very interested

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars OldePhart says:

I was waiting for you to test that tensioner with the ohm meter . . . Glad you knew better.

As an engineer – I do appreciate that you acknowledged that there are things that can't be anticipated in the field. All the time there are conditions we didn't consider because they are so absurd. Then they happen 3, 6, 19 times and you realize this is a problem – but it's hard to correct for.

You mentioned a recall and problem that GM had, but no one seems to ever mention a very deadly recall and problem Toyota had, when the Gas Pedals were sticking, even though over 90 people died and Toyota try to cover it up and hide there problem.
Since we all know Toyota hates looking bad, but enjoys making others look bad.
Lastly something a lot of people don't remember, Dodge had a very major issue with the redesigned Caravan in the 90s?? they failed to install a brake shift interlock, because of cost the 90s Ford Windstar's had them, but the early new body style Caravans did not.

I swear they design this on purpose just to milk people for more money. I left gaming consoles during the PS3 era when my PS2 has outlasted three PS3s. I don't own or want a smartphone either. Trashphone more like it. Desktop PC and older vehicles are the way if you want your purchases to last. And avoid the CCP style surveillance tech. My social credit score is -9000

We have a series of resistors wired up with pins for just this use.
This is almost exactly how I go about diagnosing air bags and pretensioners.
Just a little warning for those who are tempted to measure the resistance of the pretensioner or airbag with a meter.
DON"T. Some meters have enough potential to set them off.
I tried it so you don't have to, I should have recorded it.
And believe it or not, it was not an analogue meter that set it off.
It was a cheap digital one from a land with a red and yellow flag. 🙂

Throwing it out there because I haven't seen anybody mention it. FYI the audio on this one was real choppy. Lot's of loss throughout. I could understand just fine, but it wasn't what you normally have.

But amazing content, as always! Keep it up Ray!!

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Hartman says:

Design engineers can/should perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) on all safety components, systems, and end products, which could potentially prevent recalls such as the carpet fires.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JohnG6 says:

It amazes me how many miles people drive! I bought an F150 new in 2007. I drove that truck for 10 or 11 years and it still had roughly 56,000 miles. It was a great truck for the first 10 years.and after that it started breaking faster than I could afford to fix it.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Kinnin says:

Airbags seatbelts are a class 9 hazmat when shipped to the dealers parts room.
Car batteries are a class 8 shocks and struts are a class 2. I use to peddle car parts for Toyota.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jamie Rhys says:

Hey, Jay. I hear you talk about copyright music. I was going to let you know if you throw your audio into Audacity you can remove the lower frequencies which could potentially remove the music in the background.

5.4L 3V… possibly the most horrendous engine Ford ever made. So many numerous defects in design and quality. Worse even than their horrendous 6.0L powerstroke

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jp Noon says:

Hey ray, just wondering what diagnostic tool you use too diagnose the problems in the vehicles. As I am interested in purchasing one just like it. I like watching your videos. I learn from watching your vid’s

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Digi Horse says:

Ray on your Fluke meter if you put the probes together on ohms and press the REL button the meter will measure the leads value, re zero the display and give you a accurate reading of whatever you next measure. If sort of nulls out the lead resistances. So you wont have to do the maths.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Queen says:

Your knowledge for testing is amazing your ability and experience is great if my car needs service I would want u to do the work .

Great Video as always Ray. just wanted to let you know that I watched this yesterday and gave it a thumbs up, and today (28th) discovered that my "Like" was un-clicked. Maybe You Tube playing games or it was on my end. Just wanted to give you a heads up about it.

Another pointless video from Floridas own pseudo-intellectual one armed mechanic…

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Justin Isaacs says:

i always threw the "dont touch a seat settings" rule out, cuz if i cannot reach your pedals while im test driving your car i'm gonna move your seat. i'll definitely move it back close to where its at, but ive serviced some cars that were driving by some short people, or tall people.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RJM says:

Still a design flaw – system design

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Peter Smart says:

There is alot of intetesting stuff that goes along with passive restraint systems! I remember police and insirance investigators used to come to our collision shops to look at seat belt components and airbag hardware. Say a car was in an accident and the airbag didnt go off, well there was probability that the occupants werent wearing their seatbelts! No links burned up,no airbag deployment!

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alaska says:

Don’t forget when measuring resistance, don’t touch both terminals, you’ll be measuring resistance through your body. Another awesome video, thanks for keeping them coming!

Thats one clean rig!! i woulda thought the pretensioner would have been in the B pillar myself. As for the GM tensioner fire info…thats VERY good stuff to know as i had never heard of that before. The electronics diagnosis and rechecking every which way to confirm your diagnosis is great to see. Automotive electronics is my one weak spot and seeing how you check things with various issues on cars is great teaching tools. Thanks again for the educational video Ray:-)

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dennis 2 says:

    He forgot the cleaner. 🙂

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Denny J says:

Schrader valve? Is that the same thing that is in the stem of tires? So you can inflate them without leaks. Sure looks similar.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Vogt says:

This is what a seat belt system has become!? Where is the bubble wrap applicator? Thanks Ray. No direct criticism of your skills.
