In this video I replace the "Break-In" oil on Mrs.O's new 2019 Kia Sedona. Now this is as debatable of a topic as is what oil to use in your car and how long to go between intervals. In her car I will be using Mobil 1 5w30 with an oil spec acea a5 and replacing it every 3750 miles using OEM oil filters. That should get people wound up for sure! Why do i do it like that? Besides being a VVT, GDI engine, our climate has severe temperature changes. Weather can go form -10°f to 50°f all in the same week. We drive dirt road daily with several short trips per day (less than 15 miles). Not to mention oil is cheap in the big picture, so if you are driving on extended oil change intervals what are you really saving over all? Remember we all have our own opinion.

I use mobil 1 5w30 in my 99 solara se-213k miles and still goin strong.
For a first time or break in oil change if you will ! That oil looked kinda black I thought ! I think you said 500 ? It could have been 1000 miles but still that dark ! I'm sure you looked inside the valve cover, for any signs of sludge ! Good luck with the kia !
I use Mobil 1 oil and filters and go 10,000 miles with it. I have 234,000 miles on my Ranger and it quiet and uses no oil. You may as well use dino oil from the 60's if you are going to use a 60's oil drain interval.
Interesting video. Curious to know why you bought your wife a Kia. I think they are Korean junk. As a mechanic you have probably seen a lot of them. Do you think they are as good as Toyota or Honda? Just a price point decision?
In my f250 Ive been letting the truck tell me when to change the oil. Honestly I haven't looked to see what the intervals are but I've done it twice by 11k miles. I always use full synthetic
More interested in hearing what you think of the Kia's quality? I've heard Kia and Hyundai use old Toyota technology to build their cars. Do you see any similarities?

Hey Eric, great job! I did my Ram 6.7 at2k and change it every 5K. Oil is cheep insurance! I loved to see all those flakes in the oil filter. Keep on trucking man, great job.
The guys at my shop are constantly on my case for changing my full synthetic pennzoil every 3k-3500. I tell em I can do that over 100 times and itll be cheaper than an engine
I have the exact engine in my 2020 Sorento. I love doing my own oil changes. I figured how to do it without taking everyone of those 10mm bolt out for the splash guard, just a few of them. Any way, love your channel man.
I have always changed my oil around 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark and using Mobil one full synthetic oil, and i drive GMC’s
Eric you are a million percent right , I definitely agree with you on a brand new car you need to change the oil at 600 miles PERIOD .
THIS has led to more arguments two more of my Motorhead friends saying you don't need to do that I say bullshit you do need to do it . Anybody who doesn't absolutely think you don't do it at 600 miles is REALLY FULL OF SHIT by all means .
As far as changing oil at 3,500 miles Eric I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee I change the oil at 2,500 miles with the same exact oil that you put in your wife's Kia 5w 30 Mobil 1 when I want to change the valve covers on it because of these cast valve covers they won't stop leaking I put on the plastic ones the inside of the engine was cleaner than the outside of the engine and I cleaned this engine on a normal basis so for those of you out there , who say don't change Mobil 1 oil at less than 3000 Miles you know what screw you , I will change that oil at 2,500 Mi on my Jeep if I feel like it , and I've got the evidence to prove it it doesn't leak any oil it runs fantastic and Eric you are right Mobil one is the best.

454,000 mile original miles, rebuilt transmission .. religiously changes the oil every 3,500 -4,000 miles..Ca emissions passes without fail, uses it everyday for work… he works that truck!!

Road Trip
EU Hyundai, recommended oil change is at 30,000km (20k miles), all dealerships in Eastern Europe change it at 15,000km (10k miles).
You should consider your driving style (e.g. short vs long trips) and the gasoline used at your place. Eastern Europe uses lower quality Russian fuel, Western Europe has muh better Arab fuels. The worst quality is probably in the States, so it makes sense to change your oil at around 5000 miles.
I have used synthetic oil [usually Valvoline sometimes Mobil1] in all of our cars since about 1995. Changed at approx 3,000 miles. It might be too soon however oil is cheap AND it gives an old A&P mech something to do.
do what u did then dump the mobil 1 u just put in in 1000 miles then go with the 3500 oil is cheap getting a new engine is not just saying
Yes sir Mr.O I thought I was the only one to get the break in oil out at less then a 1000 miles, I don’t care if it’s new model engine or race motors change oil, my papaw told oil and clean filter is the life line of the engine
My wife's 16 Sedona has the same engine but the oil filter housing is on top of the motor
I send it into an OIK ANALYSIS Lab for a Print out report! I use my local Caterpillar dealership, since I used to work there!

I bought my 98 F150 two days after it was built. I did oil changes at 500 and 1,000 miles and every 3,000 since. Never anything but Mobil 1 5W30 and a Motorcraft filter. Now at 209,000 and still doesn’t burn or leak a drop. I use that $hit in everything including the lawn mower.
My thoughts… I'm done buying new cars so I'm not concerned with break in oil changes.
I thought it took 6.9 quarts…? And I was thinking the engine oil expands to some degree so the final level check on the dip-stick should be at operating temperature. I usually check it after I drive it the first time after an oil change. (Don't want to overfill it.)

totally agree with your oil change strategy only thing I do as well is after draining sump i would add a half pint of fresh oil to flush the final dregs the replace sump plug ( just my way ) and love your videos
I’m a thousand mile guy on break in oil.
I change my oil every 15k or 1 year which ever comes first, off course I use Amsoil Signature series 100% synthetic and Amsoil oil filter.
Run for a month or 500 miles then change to get out all of the assembly debris. Then break in. Run easy for 2000 so it knocks off all the high spots in the bearings and cylinder walls. Change it. Then start any normal usage.
Heat and unburned fuel are oil's enemy. So even though we don't make it to 5000 I go ahead and change every spring and fall. Put fresh oil in for the 105 with the air conditioning on high and sitting at a stop light. Then get that used up stuff out.
I used to run 20/50 for summer and 10/30 winter. The new 5/30 synthetic is great for both. Unless it gets hot. My old hotrod still gets the thick oil.
There is a recall on some Hyundai/Kia engines for debris from the manufacturing process causing oil starvation.
In heavy equipment we cut filters and inspect them pretty frequently. We also sample oil, you don’t need to guess on oil intervals, get an analysis done every few changes. They can tell you if your running your oil to long or changing it to soon.

Now if it's a highmileage engine and you see more then glitter it's a quieter time for and enging overhaul or swap
Why do cars use regular oil for break in when piston aircraft use specific break in oil that reduces additives that prevent ring seating.
Afraid that I overdo it. I do 500m and again @1500 and from then on every 4.000.
I agree with the first oil change, but 3,500 miles on mobile one is a waste. 6,000 at least. It does no good to change serviceable oil.
Black stone lab is a popular place to send used oil samples for analysis if you dont believe me.
What turned you off to Honda Mini vans Eric O.?
Oil is a personal preference/dealer requirement.
Pretty sure you drop the oil on a newer warranted car, requiring synthetic, then have engine issues requiring warranty service, they could deny it because you didn't use an approved engine oil.
But again if you're outside of a warranty. And you want to try and use Dino oil I guess that's fine but engines are manufactured different these days with smaller passages to accommodate for some of the thinner synthetic oils.
My wife has a 2016 Kia Optima LX which is similar and same to the Sedona. Did you remove the dust shield underneath to get at the Oil filter and Oil plug???

A bit late to the video but that oil filter housing is pretty much the same as to what Renault uses on it's diesel engines even got the same cut's that start spiling oil on the everywhere
I use synthetic oil 0W-20 and change it at 10K miles.
My old shop teacher had a really good point, many of these oils probably can last 10k ,15k or even 20k miles and plenty of time without breaking down significantly, but they're going to get dirty after about 5k miles no matter what filter you use. With how much modern engines use oil to actuate things (like VVT systems) and especially with how common GDI and Turbo chargers are nowadays, regular oil changes are more importan than ever.

You never know when the oil will break down it’s always a good thing to change before it gets there relatively cheap insurance for an engine And a good filter I see so many people buying the cheapest filters for a $60,000 vehicle makes no sense Awesome videos
1000 miles new vehicle or a newly rebuilt engine.. I spent years at the transmission bench, my specialty… Always recommended the customer bring the tranny back at 1 to 2000 for a free drain , filter and refill just to have a look at the break in wear residue. You're a sharp Cat and this is one hell of a good channel for those out there that generally have no idea about what it takes to survive in a shop honestly through good hard work and intelligence. I generally am not a fan of shop channels but you have a fan in this ole KY tranny tweaker 🙂
First oil change: 750mi. Subsequent oil changes: 3,500mi. 5.4L Triton now at 250K miles. Runs as good now as it did off the lot.
