Well it finally happened! Mrs.O van left her WALKIN! Good thing she was able to coast into the parking lot! The good new is it gives us the opportunity to have a look at the theory and operation of a Honda charging system. So come along as I test the system, replace the alternator on her Honda Odyssey and verify the repair! -Enjoy!

I can't thank you enough, just watching your video helped me solve my no power alternator situation(after installing a new one)I had just bought the van and installed a dashcam, pulling and not re-installing the # 18 fuse in the driver's side fuse panel, which is the computer link to send 12Volts to the alternator!!! Your channel is great!

My grandfather bought an odyssey, he knows nothing about it, or even how the work half the buttons in it, freakin thing got a turbo in it, idk what and old man needs that much go in a mini van lol.

I had a 06 Kia Sadona I got for scrap, I fixed it up a little and used it for work, That thing had a 3.8 v6, and holy shit that thing was quick, it was way quicker than my grandfathers odyssey, and it was just naturally aspirated, too bad I ended scrapping it because of the break hydro boost crap, the modual went bad and and costed nearly $700 to replace, wasn't worth it.

Mechanics come in two flavors, part changers, and troubleshooters. Correctly changing parts is a complex skill on several types of cars, on modern cars, figuring out what parts need changing is a much higher skill. As in all human endeavors, the 80%/20% rule applies. 80% of the time the problem is just what it appears, 20% of the time you're trying to fix symptoms, not the underlying problem.
I've driven behind people whose brake lights are on 90% of the time, it's obvious they drive with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. My own wife didn't drive two-footed, But her car needed a brake job every two years or so, The brakes on my car are about 11 years old.
If I'm going down a steep grade, even though I have an automatic transmission, I downshift. If I see that I'll need to stop in the next 1 or 2 minutes, I'll take my foot off the gas…If nobody is behind me who needs a warning, I often downshift. It often turns out I never touch the brake pedal at all.

I'm easy on a car, no jackrabbit starts and stops. My 2004 Honda Accord with the 2,4, 4 cyl engine still runs perfectly…It did need a starter motor 7 years ago. (I suspect the alternator is just plain wearing out, it has iffy bushing sounds) but that's it.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J M says:

My wife's 2008 Suburban had a square wave that was applied to the alternator stator, so how much charging it did was determined by the duty cycle of that square wave. If the stator is not energized, no power is drawn from the alternator, so if you turn it on and off 100 times a second, you'll only push coulombs to the battery during the little intervals when it's high. Maybe that's how your Honda works?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Zoran S says:

I usually just use a multimeter on the alternator usually if it is between 13-15V it's good,. Also disconnect the positive post and see if the alternator can keep up

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars scott carr says:

Why Oh Why do the car manufacturers make the engine bay so bloody small, and then keep cramming more and more gear in there. I used to have a 1968 HK Holden and you could get IN the engine bay with the motor. What a difference 50 years makes.

Eric, thoroughly enjoy your excellent videos! I have read that cars of recent manufacture (8-10 years ago) begin employing charge management systems to more properly address the charge cycles required by AGM batteries. When replacing these batteries it’s advised to reset the PCM with a scan tool to relearn the proper charge cycles for a new AGM battery. However watching this video just today, it seems obvious to me that the charge characteristics are based on the dynamic load characteristics of vehicle as you covered in this video. That seems more likely the correct approach for proper long term battery maintenance the “relearning” in the article I read. Could you please offer your comments. Thanks so very much for your channel and including your family in many of your presentations. Some of Mrs O’s expressions about some of your comments is quite humorous and uniquely cute!

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RideCamVids says:

As you said the alternators use a load sensing circuit but they also carry 12 diodes piggy backed onto the heat sink versus the usual six as found in your typical alternator. These alternators are not specific to this series of Honda V6 engines, they are also found in certain models of Toyota such as Camrys 1.8 Corollas, Rav4s and a few of the pickups. Honda does not offer the regulator, rectifier or brushes separately, it comes as a complete part with the stator and end frame included. However once you test the rotor and stator for continuity and those windings are good, its easy to replace the regulator, rectifier and brush pack components which are available from places like Ebay etc.
