In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a customers car that is stuck in park. Now bear in mind most if not all cars have an over ride to get the car out of park so familiarize yourself with that system before you need it in an emergency. It could be a mechanical interlock failure, a bad brake light switch, a broken wire, corroded connector and the list goes on.
-Enjoy!

I leased a 2009 MKZ. I was shocked to see the sticker said, assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico. So much for 'buying' American. The 3.5l also has the self-destruct water pump

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kakeeto Alex says:

Your NAPA sponsorship is on its way, a suitable area manager is on their way with it..😂😂😂

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeffry Blackmon says:

    Good advice. Thanks.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 1320Jay says:

    Good info!

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Don Mears says:

Another South Main home run. I own a 2010 Fusion that this could directly help me with in the right situation.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Mack says:

You made him wait a month for a $10 switch, when it was most likely the cause? Hmm.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thomas Brown says:

I need a chiropractic adjustment after watching that

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars abrdds says:

Fascinating… getting under any dash is a pain and getting out is a bear

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oscar Jones says:

Napa won’t sponsor such a successful channel, and it’s an independent too. Sounds like they treat Eric like garbage being that DIY customers can probably get better discounts and refuse to sponsor him

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Berg says:

I like when these fail on cars with push-button start. Always makes for a happy customer, especially when they have a car full of screaming kids and groceries turning to goo in the summer heat because their car won’t start.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kmac says:

    easy peasy!!!

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Mason says:

Back in my towing days, hauled many a cars because of this exact issue.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K M says:

I'm disappointed… no brake cleaner harmed in the making of this film.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Patrick Kyker says:

You should have asked him to set the cruise control and see if it was hard to disengage by tapping the brake.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars iamkerok says:

    "Lucky Guess" = "Provisional Diagnosis"😉

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Burnett says:

Great video! Some differences between makers – sometimes there is a rubber gasket on the brake pedal where the switch contacts and that will wear out/fall off and cause a failure. For the Honda brake switch, the white section at the end is the only part that moves and the black section is threaded. Push down the depth you want and then twist to install

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Parry says:

    I'm still thirsty

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Sislo says:

I know how to get Napper to sponsor you. Tell them you are going to remove the NAPA Care Center sign from the front of your building! Boom. Bang. Done.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 61 Rampy says:

Years ago, a co-worker informed me that my brake lights were out. A kwik check under the dash showed all wires connected. I had to laugh at myself on the 15 mile drive home, because up til then, I had no idea they were inop. For the drive home, at 9pm, I drove like a lil old lady, petrified someone would hit me from behind. If it was daytime, I would have turned on my parking lights to at least illuminate the rear lights, but being dark out, the park lights were already on. Made it home ok, installed a previously road-tested switch, all was OK.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars THEDRAGONBOOSTER8 says:

It was a great video .Thanks..

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars HorseCok says:

All your videos are great Eric, thank you.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mc2whls says:

Been there with the brake light switch fail. Fortunately mine was covered by a recall.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars InsideOfMyOwnMind says:

Eric the correct nomenclature for component removal is "Unclick." You should already know that by now. Ask Ray.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Busted Knuckle says:

I'm old enough to remember when NAPA parts were better……. sadly not anymore

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bill Martin says:

No NAPA sponsor but you are a NAPA autocare center, what’s up with that?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dick Schottky says:

    Thanks!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K Paul says:

Just pull it out and it only go's in the hole one way. Lol 😆 🤣 😂

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Snoddy says:

    48 ounce bladder buster 😄

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kurt Ehrhardt says:

    Justin Timberlake on the brakes

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Snoddy says:

We don't want them as a sponsor 😜

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tom TKE says:

Wowzer…. I'd be appreciative of not getting out of park if my brake lites didn't work, right?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timothy Tilley says:

You know what I like best about watching your videos? Watching someone else work on a car! I definitely don’t miss it! Ha. (I mean other than the fact that you are a good guy working on cars and I learn something on most videos. I mean other than that.)

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Elizondo says:

    Stinkin Lincoln

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timothy Tilley says:

When was the last time we heard the Da-Dom! Brake Cleaner! We miss it… (Maybe some random Brake Cleaner appearances? Just a thought…)

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Buffing says:

I would also recommend knowing where the key fob override is if the battery dies in it. Steering column, center console etc

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars happy543210 says:

Those original ford parts are cheap as crap. Just Imagine the naper chinese copies.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K_Tech says:

I had a Mazda that had the same issue a handful of years ago. I'd had issues taking it out of park intermittently, so I started carrying a screwdriver in the center console. One day some stranger in a parking lot told me that my brake lights weren't working and I finally put two and two together and bought a new switch at Autozone (not a sponsor).

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Ellenbaum says:

    brake switch

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Butler says:

I had a 79 Ford Grenada that went through 4 brake light switches in a year. I got to the point that if someone got a little too close for comfort when I stopped I would immediately get someone to tell me if the brake lights were working. I had 2 from Autozone fail after the original one did and went to Napa for the last one. It was still working when I got rid of the car.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Marshall says:

Modern problems. I miss the old neutral safety switch,,,

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MacDonalds Motorworks says:

my wife asked me to join her at a yoga class…nah.. I don't need a class… I do yoga every day! (under a dash, it a wheel well, some guys trunk…) I'd just like that 2nd elbow for the times when you need to twist an extra 90 degrees and there's no joints left!🤣

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Kapp says:

I had two 98 Toyota Camry's and there was a link at the end of the cable that went to the transmission shifter. That link got rusty and broke on both of them. I did a quick fix on one of them with a piece of wire to get it going , and that quick fix worked for a few years until I got rid of the car. The second Camry I saw a guy on the street with his head under the hood cause his car wouldn't go. I showed him the fix and he got it home, but he decided to sell the car so I bought it from him . I did a little bit nicer fix on that one using some plumbers strap instead of wire ! Worked fine .

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sara Price says:

    2 thumbs up

  54. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerome Strong says:

Quick and easy fix. Good guess. Mr.O. to the rescue.

  55. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CRAIG POWELL says:

your sound is way to low in last 4 or 5 vedio

  56. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars flatdaddio says:

    Great video Mr. "O"..

  57. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Chidester says:

Still don't understand why the thunder Naper won't sponsor the best auto channel on the tube..

  58. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremiah Bullfrog says:

Stupid stuff like this is one of the reasons I bought a car with a manual transmission.

  59. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nick Myers says:

I see in typical first generation Fusion/MKZ/Milan fashion the dashboard is preparing for liftoff – like a LeSabre haha

Listening to peoples “work arounds” is funny. Some of the most bizarre approaches – CarTalk on NPR made sure to highlight some of the absurdity sometimes haha

Only had a brake switch problem like this on a 2006 Taurus. I’ll have to remember to check the brakes!. Had a couple of failed solenoids on the shifter interlock on the floor shifter from overturned bladder busters lol

  60. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bryan Ballard says:

That beat box deserves a thumbs up 👍

  61. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MyMomSays I'mCool says:

Those 1st Gen Fusion, MKZ, Milan were solid cars.

  62. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Neal Daugherty says:

I had a '64 Triumph Hearld, convertible, 4-seater, RED! The brake light quit working; I removed the brake light switch by the brake pedal, disassembled it, wiped off the teeny-tiny spider smashed between the contacts, reassembled it and replaced it in front of the brake pedal. Why can't we fix our cars like that today?

  63. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Field says:

In a recent video you said you could turn corn into meat,,, I'd like to see that.

  64. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tyrone elliott says:

Can we petition napa to sponsor this man ?

  65. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spankybear says:

This is all because the of the Ford Granada…

  66. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars usernameisdavex says:

Over extending the switch could also keep the pedal (read brakes) from fully releasing.

  67. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyler's Forgotten Car Rescue says:

Remember when you get a sponsor you get a boss too.

  68. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Do Da says:

    Whatsa switch like that cost.

  69. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PaulyWit says:

  71. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Gardner says:

    Good thing to know.

  72. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ted Saylor says:

You know how you have the brake cleaner sound? You need a NAPA sound.

  73. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Beilman says:

Napa should pay you for the sign in your shop

  74. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Josh Wilson says:

The 48 ounce bladder buster 😂😂😂

  75. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stash Oski says:

    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

  76. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ikantspell4 says:

As always a great video! I had a car that refused to shift an it was the bloody shifter itself that failed. Took a lot of time on the google to figure out how to get it to into neutral. Knowing in advance how to deal with an issue like this is solid advice. An oz of prevention and all that.

  77. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars for2utube says:

Also you could ask “Have you been using your cruise control, and having problems with it not disengaging when you press the brake?”

  78. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars springfield45 says:

Loved it, even my wife thought the beat box was funny.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RICHARD WILKENS says:

As always you have be half contortionist

  80. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Motor City Fats says:

on the 4th gen explorers it was the white box inside the shifter and actuated the lock out

  81. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William White says:

On my 2005 Dodge Magnum there is a little plastic hook that typically breaks off and it won't shift out of park. My broke at about 115k miles. Cheap repair if it's a do it yourself.

  82. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ivan Duke says:

    Thank You!!

  83. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Edward Silva says:

    Fine job!

  84. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Frank CRENSHAW says:

  86. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gerard Johnson says:

    Great fix. Thanks for sharing.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Smith says:

I even had to go to an online video to change a headlight. Woe!

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Smith says:

It's amazing what you can do when you know what the problem is. 🙂

  89. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Walter Woods says:

    Good thing your athletic

  90. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J. Hart says:

What does a brake switch have to do with not being able to shift out of park?

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big Bear Venom says:

    Good tip bro !

  92. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sydecarnutz says:

Great info! Thank you! But what about the rotary shift knobs Ford uses now?

  93. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carlos Navarro says:

Eric thanks for hooking Ray up with the correct Brake Kleen intro sound now his intro is legit!

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jack says:

    Nice work

  95. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Melvin Jones says:

Simple when you know what to do. He could have kicked the switch. Over ride is aways good to know.

  96. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jack 6703 says:

Great video, retired trans man here. In a emergency you can turn the key just to unlock the steering wheel ( as not to energize the interlock) move the shifter to neutral position then start the car then move shifter. Just some helpful info. Thanks for the videos always look forward to them. Keeps me working in my head with out lifting a tool. 👍

  97. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars VictheWrench says:

Maladjustment, such as you described, may have been all that was wrong with the original brake light switch. 🙂

  98. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Harvey Band says:

I've had a couple of weird problems that were related to the brake pedal. A couple of years ago, my F150's cruise control quit working. I could turn it on, but in a second it would stop working. After consulting the Mighty Google, I was headed to the master cylinder to check something, but mine looked different from the one that was described. The next suggestion was to check the upper brake light and sure enough it was burned out. I used one from the bed lights that were in the same number. It worked. Apparently the open filament makes the cruise think that the brake pedal is down.

  99. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J. Mark Krzystofiak says:

Remember when there was a slot specifically designed to slide a car key into to do that!
    Wait. Remember car keys?
