In this video I have a look at a Nissan Altima 2.5 that came in running rough, stalling and CEL on with codes for the over advanced intake cam and a issue with the intake manifold runner control. I don't see a lot of Nissan's in our area so it is a little bit of learning and looking through service info to understand the system. After all, if you don't know how it works you can't fix it. -Enjoy!

With a code set, some systems go to a failsafe to maintain a running condition. Freeze frame data may have some information for you.

Worth mentioning…He immediately checked the oil and the service interval sticker after seeing the VVT code because VVT solenoids and systems in general are super sensitive to broken down/dirty oil. He didn't really verbalize that but I thought it would just be worth mentioning…with some of you guys out there seeing more and more of these systems. It can really help lead you in the right direction in your diagnosis if the service has been neglected. Great VJO as always Big E. Thanks! Keep em coming!

Got a P-0011 on my 13 YO X-Trail. Fault was clearance on all valves down to .003 – .oo5". They'd done 100,000 Kms since last checked!! Symptom was low power on start up and on cruise control tendency to change down a gear on slight slope.

Nissan Wiring diagrams are usually just good enough to really tick me off because I wan't a real diagram. The wire colors are crazy. Black, Black with white stripe, black with yellow stripe, black with yellow dashed stripe, black with purple stripe. They also are paranoid about chafing they have all these brackets and wire loom holders all over the freaking place making it hard to get to the harnesses. I keep about 3 different Nissan starters on hand though, I do a crap ton of starters on them.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David E.S. says:

Can't remember where I saw it but poor oil / engine maintenance cased some oil passages to plug up That stopped a variable valve timing to not work. You think something like this is happening here?

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MJM’s Workshop says:

I’m betting you are right on the money with that aftermarket solenoid.

seems like some new editing technique's with transparent screen in screen with a 2nd screen in screen! cool! Good job.

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Auto Fix Pal says:

the solenoid closest to the firewall is the lock solenoid and its purpose is to lock the Valve timing at 10degrees during cold engine start up (it usually is 10 degree, 9 or 11). I believe it is turned off when the coolant temp reaches 150degrees or something like that. Those solenoids are high failure. all 3 of them (same part number) and they do get stuck either open of closed. Best repair is to replace all 3 at the same time. I did a video on this. I have had 1 cam phaser failure for VTC however it was a totally different DTC like p056b or something strange like that. but typically the Engine internals are very reliable on this engine even with neglect… Cold start you should see 10degrees intake timing until warmed up. snap throttle you should see anywhere from 6degrees to 30degrees on the intake cam timing… You can test the exhaust side by holding the engine RPM at about 2k RPM and it will activate the exhast VTC solenoid. You should see anywhere from 5degrees to 20degrees. Dont focus so much on the amount of timing change but more so that you see an obvious change. I cant explain why some vehicles will give like 8degrees of change sitting still and some 20degrees. Either way the ECM dont care, its just looking for a change in timing. You may also see brake booster DTC's with this if you encounter a exhaust VTC issue on any 13-18 nissan 2.5 liter because of the stuck exhaust timing and overlap and blah blah you already know.

2 or 3 a week with this issue where i work. Very surprised it has not become a TSB yet.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Discretesignals says:

Is it possible when bi directionally controlling the cam timing with Autel it is only commanding the cam phaser actuator and not the lock solenoid? Is lock solenoid a separate special function in the list?

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars randy taylor says:

Eric O. I rarely let anyone work on my vehicles as I do 90% of my own work. Having said that I'm seriously considering taking the 3½ road trip to have you diagnose my car!

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Synical Beats says:

Nissan tech here. There are 2 intake cam solenoid. One locks it at 0 degrees and one advances it. It should be at 0 while cold then advance to 20 or so once it goes into closed loop. One of the solenoids usually sticks causing the advance cam gear to either stay at zero or advance way too far. The fact it's running like garbage suggests to me it's over advancing. Unsticking the solenoid could fix it, if not it may be the actual cam gear. Both solenoids are a bitch to get to. I pull the solenoid that's acting up and physically see if it's stuck open. I try to unstick it with a pick. Then I apply power to it to see if it moves. Most of the time that's the issue. If not replacing the cam gear itself will fix it. Don't beat the piss out of yourself trying to find what's going on because besides the solenoid acting up it will not be apparent. 2 of us got stuck on that on the same day and the master tech threw a cam gear at it and it fixed the issue. I did the same and it fixed the issue. Other than that for me it's always been the solenoid sticking.

When your setting up scheduling of cars to see, Obviously you take into account nature of reported problem, How close do you come in estimating job time, when all is said and done. Just a estimate or average. Hitting it perfect would be good, but Im thinking would be hard to do. Maybe to hard to answer.
