There viewers and welcome back to the south main auto channel got a c05 nissan nissan it's the ultima it's the 2 5 sl and the guy tells he's got oil on his pistons. What that means is he took it into a shop apparently because he's got this misfire problem that it does have on the number one cylinder. And they told him that he has oil on his pistons uh at least on the number one piston and they put spark plugs in it. And you know here we are at any rate.
What they mean is his spark plug tube seals are leaking so this was in the other day. I pulled the uh pulled that coil out so i can have a look at it and indeed. There was you know oil saturation all over it so he gave us permission to fix it amongst other things he wants done i thought i'd bring you guys along when we fix this oily pistons and see if this ignition coil is any good when i drove it in the other day it was not misfiring. However it sat outside for a little bit here two or three days.
While we were waiting on parts. And it is now misfiring so uh perhaps that's the results of the old oil on the piston. So we'll take and unplug these now in my limited research. I did not see spark plug tubes offered for sale on the old nissan and i think i've been down this road.
Before i did call. The nissan dealer and they did agree that they do not offer. The spark plug tube seals. Nor did the aftermarket valve cover gasket kits.
They did not come with tube seals. So you're required to buy the entire valve cover. How ridiculous is that number four is dry number three is dry number two is dry number one wet piston uh. The coil's pretty saturated with oil as you can see and uh rest assured.
Though it's not a bad piston. So what we're gonna do i guess before we tear this apart. I did buy a valve cover for it we'll have to open up that box. See what it looks like this one let's just wire up.
There's a hose in the back into the pcb. I'm assuming looks easy peasy to do and then we've got the fresh air side of the pvc pcb positive crankcase ventilation. Let's have a look at the uh new velcro here. We go ordered.
It from napper uh ultra eight itch class gate. 580721. Valve. Cover.
Let's have a gander here. Before we get too deep my knee. That guy couldn't get it for a while so we went this route from probably the same stuff not the same stuff. It doesn't say nissan on it the part that baffles.
Me is you know obviously somebody makes the valve cover. Therefore obviously somebody makes the tube seals to put in set valve cover. Did come with a gasket in it hopefully. We're not going to get burned with this jobby that one's loose that always seems to be a bit of a stiffy.
So we're gonna have to be careful with some of this stuff. We will take them both loose right there that gives us a little more room to get to the hose. We'll go that clamp back if we can that hose is unhooked goody goody that hose is unhooked the duggar look out there buddy go get a magnet. Because you don't want to drop down. Sounds. Like josh is having way more fun than we are all right. There's that so these are all shoulder bolts uh all appear to be the same and now we need to crack the valve cover so it's not loose already which it isn't you know ladies what give her a little pry stick that pocket. There we are so there's that yeehaw now it's just a matter of making sure.
It's clean. I'm going to use a classic carbide scraper here. We're just going to come across it make sure everything's cool. This is uh has a little recess here.
I would have thought that was machined on the same plane. But it does not have some numbers on it too interesting. There is a little dabs of silicone here in the corner. As you can see silicone starts here comes around probably when they do the timing cover.
I imagine so we'll put a little drop of silicone. The corners off so it's kind of common practice. You'll see try to keep the junk out of the engine things pretty clean so now this is all cleaned out brake cleaned. We're going to put just a dab of some ultra gray here in the corner.
Just to be a hundred percent certain and do it on the back side also it's pretty common practice. You'll see on you know the style valve cover or any time. There's two machine surfaces coming together. They'll often have the recommendation of putting a little silicone.
There and then on the tube seals that you apparently can't get we're going to put a little silly cone on that the different type. Though some super lube. Some slippery silicone just that way there they slip over the tubes. Nice and easy.
We're not fighting that at all we should be in good shape. Now. It's like ky for cars. I'm going to get a couple bolts started here now that i haven't started.
We're just going to kind of work our way around start drawing it down and letting the seals expand over top of those spark plug tubes is that's it baby. So. We'll stick the oil cap back on and then i had to get this little guy off the other valve cover. I didn't notice that uh.
It's just for this wiring. Harness holder back here it clicks into the valve cover. So we'll give it a classic reach click that into there and then we'll take and stick the hose. We're trying to make a video.
Oh. I'm just trying to work so. Excuse. Me excuse.
Me oh stand by stand back. While i was answering. They're very lovely. This is all those questions.
I hooked up that pcb hose on the back side there. And then i will snug them up now those belt cover bolts those are shouldered bolts. So you can't really over tighten them i take that back you can over tighten them in the center. You can tighten them down until they break you can't really over tighten them in the sense that you can over tighten.
The gasket because the bolt. Only goes so tight and then it stops and then you keep turning and then it breaks down so don't turn it until it snaps. I guess. That's what i'm getting at that's all i wanted to say makes our silly cone smooshed out and it did so now we have to clean out the hole down. There we have to get the oil and garbage out of it it's just mostly oil no real garbage and then we have to clean off this coil to make sure. It's not just arcing across the oil you know that's a pretty good conductor. So we'll have to get this baby sprayed off the rubber boot. You guys can see the rubber boot should come off it so we'll get all the oil and crap cleaned out of this and hopefully.
This coil is still good if not what you know putting the coil on it we'll take our known good coils. We'll stick them back in there put a little dielectric grease in the bottom of them to keep them from getting stuck on there. And hopefully insulate and keep all the electrons where they need to be and then we'll just take our other coil here i got to clean that we'll put that back together this had a lot of oil in it we've jammed in there pretty good so yes hit the floor uh. So oh you guys might not be able to see anything.
But um. They do you just pop them apart. I just popped it apart took all the rubbers off it and then cleaned it in our eco friendly parts washer. Which is basically just soap and water soap and water soap and water some kind of arm and hammer stuff.
I don't know if they charge you 300 every three months 100 a month cost me to keep my parts washer does not include eating it the entire time what a joke. They do it. Because it's eco friendly and it's the law here in the prny. We can no longer have high voc parts washers because polar bears are dying.
However since we've gotten rid of our petroleum. Based parts washer and now they only offer a silicone based or aqueous water based. So since they've done that we now go through like 13. More cases of brake cleaner per month.
So i don't know if it really helped anything it just made it more of a pain in the ass. But that's just my thoughts on it okay. Let's see if this thing runs now without skipping or if we're going to need a new ignition coil stand by got that there you have it folks fix the oily piston. I guess it will be uh and also fix his misfire so that's good uh.
Fortunately for this fella. The misfire seems to be coming just from that oil saturated coil. You know just you know causing spark outside the cylinder. We'll call it uh that's not making it down the spark plug and uh that's that so piece of cake uh.
We're able to get the valve cover here through napper who still doesn't sponsor us and it comes with the spark plug tube seals. I don't know what the deal is with nissan on these vintage engines. Why you have to buy the whole stinking valve cover. I'm sure there is some source out there some wears in the www dot. Fix my nissancom world that people know about but here in the shop when we're buying our parts from you know brick and mortar stores uh. It's hard to you know spend all day looking on the ebay and stuff to try to come up with you know some solution here but either way. It's fixed. We can stand behind it give them our unlimited limited warranties and uh that's that and uh.

the tube seals for the 3.5l v6 altima work for these only issue is that theyre glued in these and theres a plastic ring that locked them in, you almost need to dremel it out or use a holesaw. not worth the trouble

It's crazy how much plastic is used on modern engines. My 91 Nissan Sentra has 395,000 miles on it. The last 300,000 were mostly from my wife driving it. In the time we've had it it had only 5 oil leaks. 3 were the front crankshaft seal which first failed at about 115,000 miles. It would fail about every 100,000 miles. 1 leak was the oil pressure sensor and the last was the valve cover gasket. That 1.6 liter engine was well built and designed. At 375,000 miles all valve clearances were well within specs and that was with solid lifters. They were never adjusted and the head has never been off the engine. Timing chains and guides were replaced because of timing chain slap. It only got parked because it was going to cost more to replace the struts and paint it than the car was worth. I wish I had just done the work without telling my wife what it was going to cost.
Those seals will not come out w/o destroying the cover.

We use a water based Zep Formula 50 it cuts oil and grease very well
Actually the best stuff for a parts washer or washing alof of items is purplepower, made in Greenville,SC you can buy it a parts store for 25usd or so for 5 gallons, in a reusable 5gallon round bucket, or 23 usd or so in square 5 gallon container, from walmart. Yea it will have to soak a bit, But even for NY is suitable in shops there. dont get that crap on your hands, they can and will peel, full strength that is.
Best bet is to always replace the plastic valve covers due to warping.
A lot of shops just put silacone on the tube seals. It's not ideal but it works in a pinch.
You could mold an Ultragrey (high temp silicone) seal. Either 3d print a 2 part mold, or make the mold on a milling macine with a round nose end mill and a rotary table. If desired embed kevlar or carbon fiber tow.
I did a similar job a couple of years ago on a 2008 Ford Focus. It was running rough and had oil down inside a couple of the spark plug wells. Luckily on that car the gaskets to seal the spark plug holes were built into the valve cover gasket so you didn't have to buy a new cover. I did buy new plugs and coil boots and all of those things fixed the leaks and the rough idle.

Looks like one of the good valve covers. My '05 had an after market one on it and the baffle was held on by melted down plastic dowels, one or more of those failed causing oil consumption through the pVC system going through a quart of oil every tank full of gas. Blue smoke at start up etc. On the good valve covers, you can see the sonic welding patterns holding down and sealing the baffle.
We had an 05 Altima SL with the 2.5 for a number of years. The interior was a little low rent and we had one fuel injector die at just 25k, but once that was replace it ran good until we traded it in…
What would PRNY say if you actually used the Red (dry cleaner smell) Brake Cleaner?
You can still get Red here in Arizona.
It's entirely possible, the reason why they want you to buy the entire valve cover, is because the type of plastic they made it out of becomes brittle after x/y/z years/miles/hours of engine run time. Plastic can either be cheap, or really expensive. If they're trying to cut cost on material costs, they have to engineer to account for that. Why replace the seals, if your valve cover shatters into a million pieces while driving the old/new seals out and in.

That engine is a big cheap pile of garbage. I bet you the underlying cause of the misfire is a bad head gasket that blew due to excessive back pressure from the pre cat. Such a nightmare. Having my 02 Altima cured me of ever buying another Nissan again. They're like the Chrysler of Japan.

When I recently had time off, my valuable 4 days off every 3 months I did the valve cover gaskets on my brothers Sentra and his wife's civic and diag'd our buddy's '12 ford fusion with oil in the spark plus tube as well all 3 motors had oil in #1 also… why is it always #1?? Atleast fixed both cars put all new sparkies and coil packs in so issues resolved but I still wonder why every one seems to be the #1 tube…
You did a vid a while back where someone had a taillight out (I believe it was a Chevy) and she had to but the entire taillight assembly (something like $300)! So it's not difficult to grasp that Nissan wants the seals sold with the "$cover". It's all about draining the wallet after the initial sale. I was surprised that the cover fit as well as it did, and the seals worked. There are lots of aftermarket parts that are just plain useless garbage! Great vid, Eric! 👍

That is the main reason I will never own another Nissan. They only want to sell you the parts not components. My buddy had a titan that had a seal leak. They quoted him 6K for a new rear end. A co worker had a seal leak on a steering rack….$3500…. They can keep em.

Gotta make sure that the silicone sealant or silicone lubricant you use on engine parts is oxygen sensor safe. In this example, those plug tube seals contact the crankcase oil which inevitably burns through the PCV, valve stem seals, and on cylinder walls. The products that are not O2 sensor safe will poison the sensor within a few hundred miles and cause a non responsive reading and a money light. Air parts, crankcase parts, and fuel parts. If anything touches the air, gasoline, or engine oil, your silicone sealant or lube must be labeled specifically to be sensor safe. 💪😎

Nothing about the "environmental" movement makes any sense these days. I was experimenting with my big chest freezer this summer by adding 1 1/2 of insulation to the outside to make it more efficient. Man did that work great and uses way less electricity now because the heat can't get in and the cold can't get out. Instead of worrying about Freon getting into the atmosphere they should have "mandated" or "regulated" that he manufactures put more insulation in them. Not only would you save on electricity but your freezer will last two to three times longer and have less need to be recharged at any time. But alas it is actually not about the environment or logic with the psychopaths making all the rules these days. Love that brake cleaner.

Just did this exact job on my Nissan 2.2L… Turns out the seals are available if you know proper part number, for my engine anyway. They were for a completely different motor but I took a chance and trusted what I was told by a completely different source and they fit like a glove (youtube video that actually showed the part numbers in video and it was my engine that he was replacing them on).
The problem with my year of vehicle is that most all of the engines came with a plastic valve cover. My engine has an aluminum valve cover and they were easily replaceable. Not truly certain who decided what and why, but Nissan didn't make replaceable seals on plastic valve covers. On my car someone dropped the ball somewhere and it doesn't show a listing for seals anywhere from Nissan or the aftermarket, just a full plastic valve cover. It ended up being the seals for a 1 year later model 2.5 or something similar.
This vehicle you are working on is MUCH newer than my old beater though. I don't find it surprising that seals aren't listed for it. I seem to recall a story from "somewhere" (getting old, my memory sucks) that in the early days they sold the seals regularly but to many techs were messing up when seating them. Nissan switched to selling the entire cover to combat the issue. Take this story with a grain of salt tho, I could be mistaken.
I’ve been using Simple Green full strength in my parts washer. Works very well and is easy on the skin.

I changed the spark plugs on the wife's '06 Chevy Trailblazer 4.2 I6 engine. Found oil on the #3 coil rubber. Great. Get to change valve cover seals. And intake manifold seals, because that has to come off to get the valve cover off. Not looking forward to that job.
Can't you measure the "unobtainable " seal. You know. ID…OD…THICKNESS…and contact a distributor and request the aforementioned? Not a big deal, Chief.

The napa one I would take the valve cover gasket and the tube seals out of the napa one and put them in the oem Nissan cover that would be what I would do Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

I'm holding both valve covers for a 2006 Frontier in my hands. Got them from ebay, made in china. Didn't find the time to install them yet. The quality appears to be excellent, no imperfections as far as I can tell. The soft rubber/silicon gasket sits in a groove and will not fall out during installation. The seals for the spark plug well do NOT come out, they seem to be molded into the plastic material. that means they cannot be replaced even though I saw them advertised on ebay once.
My problem is oil consumption. The stealer ship said it's leaking and burning off on a heat shield. No smoke, no trace under the engine or on the ground. I can see the leak but don't quite believe that it accounts for a quart / 200 miles.
I was hoping that the valve cover would be stubborn enough that you'd have to bring ol Brooksy out. He must be getting bored laying around in the drawer by now.
All it did was probably get most shops to buy clear kerosene to use in their parts washers so they do not need to pay the Eco friendly one that cost more. Even if it is illegal they probably have it hidden and if the place is to be inspected to see if they have parts washers like that the shop probably either moves it out or empties the Kerosene and puts out of order on the parts washer so they don't get caught.
I like to use a mixture of mineral spirts and kerosene in my parts washer. I love using the GM Grey sealant over all the rest. Another great video with great tips to stay away from those wasteful comebacks that we all dread.

Sadly they mold the seals into the cover and when trying to remove them, the baffle gets in the way. The 4.0 Nissan are the same way.

Used up a couple three cans of brake cleaner thus last week.

Tube seals – sounds like a opportunity…
Short on time so I had to skim through but it appears there’s a chance the oil is entering the spark plug well from the bottom of the pressed-in non-removable tubes, not from the top seals. Just blowing air into a plug-less tube will pull oil into the tube if that’s the failure point. There’s a YT video, applying a vacuum to draw Permatex’s green sleeve retainer liquid around the tube perimeter. I’ve had good results with something similar, Permatex’s green threadlocker, since that’s all I could find locally. I made sure no oil remained (brake cleaner, air, acetone, air) and just filled the cavity, letting gravity work with the low viscosity liquid.
There are no seals on the market for the 2.5 valve cover at all. New Nissan cover is the only proper fix unfortunately. Have had my Altima since 2005.
