You may be due for a new snap ring tool. It does not seem to want to hang on to it under pressure. And oh no….you put the wheel on upside down. I could tell by the center cap saying Ford upside down.

I remember in high school in 2001 😆 🤣 i brought my dads ranger into high school mechanics before graduation i checked his tires for all that cause town im from had a big loss from a crash with an explorer with the bad batch of tire
Presume the front left versus rear left wheel bearing was a transfer of information issue somewhere along the line, guessing the tire guy did report the issue to the customer and that's what started the process, that bearing must have been noisy for quite some time.
The final result in the Ford/Firestone debacle was that Ford no
longer uses Bridgestone or Firestone tires on ANY Ford product.

Good video mare….but remember how you had trouble getting the old snap ring out…..maybe the bearing could have pushed further in to be well clear of the snap ring groove….you adapted well…….and even gave us some laughs…..thx my friend
The whole Exploder debacle was disproven by Car and Driver and Road and Track. Their tests discovered that it was always a driver fault. Tire blows, driver freaks out and panics, jamming the brakes and cranking the wheel. I watched the tests they did back in the day. They had a device that would instantly de-bead the tire remotely. The driver didn't know which wheel or when it would happen. And yes, they used the same Firestone tires for the tests. At the end, the driver had his hands on his head doing 60mph, just waiting for the "blowout", and all he did was take his foot off the gas, then once the vehicle slowed down enough, he applied the brakes to a stop. Never touched the wheel, and the Explorer went in basically a straight line. That said, the Firestone tires were crap, and the recommended pressures were a bad call on Ford's end. But never underestimate the power of stupid.
Ford submitted specs for tire companies to bid on, and the price point Ford set scared off Goodyear, IIRC. Firestone met the price point by going with a cheap tire design and about to be submitted to a challenging situation. (Fun fact: the Bronco II before it had its own rollover problems and the Explorer was supposed to be progress because it had a few inches more of wheelbase, which does help with that.
It was the dawn of American consumers screaming, “I don’t know what center of gravity means but I wanna be up in the air in a trucky thing for fashion’s sake!” People weren’t rolling their Caprice Classics or Dodge Darts in the 70’s when their tires blew, and I’m sure there were some low rent and neglected tires in those days, too. Center of gravity, people.
American’s refusal to check their tire pressure with a gauge, because it’s so hard to kneel or some damned reason I could never figure out. More carpet, roof, and glass, that era of SUV carried more weight on the rear tires than a similar pickup truck. Add full passenger load and cargo on a long trip on an interstate on a hot day and, well, in theory, the customers are supposed to (after reading the glovebox manual that they didn’t throw out, right?) add air pressure to the tires for such situations.
Ford and Firestone did screw up, but it always irked me how much the consumers’ role in all this was just ignored. Big mean corporations! Now everybody drives around in slightly less tippy SUV’s but with stability control and tire pressure sensors, so that’s nice. But CG is still CG, you silly geese.
must be so rewarding to regain proper roadholding & silence from the back during final road test, even despite the frustration when refitting snap ring held you up. perhaps not designed to be easily removed & refitted with the simple hand tool, rather factory tools.
Your sense of humor is priceless! Where I'd be cussing, you just Crack me up! But you reminded me of working at a tire shop in Jersey in 1979 or 80 just out of H.S. ( I was road service, fixing flats on 18 wheelers!) Firestone had defective tires called the Firestone 500. The rubber separated from the metal belts ( Michelin the best) 2 passenger tires separated the exact same way and the tread zig zaged a photographer from Time magazine (rag) was there and did a story on the defects! So my hands were in time magazine!
On the snap ring thing, I learned a few moons ago as an apprentice tearing down truck gearboxes that snap rings are designed to go in one way.
My boss asked me to look at one and tell him which way it should be put in. After about 10 mins I said I can't see why it would be wrong to put it in either way.
He pointed my attention to the 2 holes the pliers go into, they are slightly tapered so as to "hook into your pliers. If you measure the diameter of the hole at the surface on both sides, one will be ever so slightly smaller, that is the side that faces up.
Hence why I found alot of trouble removing some snap rings from blind holes, the taper was the wrong way.
P.S, make sure to wire wheel the groove they go in so they seat properly.
I agree with the last guy yes could like to see it all but job comes first. And snap rings have not been a friend to me too.
The Michelin Crossclimate 2 is an incredibly good tire. I have a 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid that came with Bridgestone Ecopia tires installed and at 8200 miles I could not take it any more. I had done a lot of research and decided on the Michelins, they are not inexpensive, but live up to what I had seen about them. They certainly don't look like a tire that would deliver a smooth, quiet ride but they do. They also do well enough in snow to have earned the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol on the sidewall. A major online tire seller has them rated #1 of 58 all season Grand Touring tires with over 6 Million miles reported.

The Firestone 500 was their first radial. During the initial training period employees were on hourly wage. After the end of training on the new radials they went to piece work. This resulted in incomplete curing on some of the tires. When they heated up they could come apart. I saw a picture of a CHP cruiser near Mojave with three blowouts and the vehicle remained upright . Firestone tried every excuse in the book. This is where we got the caution about not cross-rotating radials. Meanwhile Michelin stated in their 1984 handbook that there were no restrictions on rotating their tires barring any vehicle manufacturer's cautions.
Need a hub tamer
I have done several of these and I thoroughly clean the snap ring location with brake clean and wire brush, I use a little heat on the hub to enlarge slightly, the old bearing bearing pushes out easily. I use a 6" Machinist Vise, while easily pushing the bearing and hub out I put the New hub and New bearing in the freezer or some dry ice or just a fresh cold gel pack. A little freeze action gives maybe 1 – 2 thousands shrinkage and a little oil or grease on the outside of the bearing and Hub spindle allow for a REAL EASY INSTALL. No Big Press needed. A 6" vice will do an admiral job! use a big socket or 2" pipe to push out old bearing and hub assembly. Clean out snap ring groove REALLY WELL. Compress snap ring and start far end away from snap ring pliers and install ring first tilting snap ring into the groove and using a screwdriver push in snap ring down and into the groove while releasing the tension on the snap ring pliers. PRESTO!
I had an 02 explorer that I luv’d! Now I have a 2014 explorer sport, 135k had to break the engine apart… oil changes, on time with mobile 1. Not happy, going back to Chevy products…

It's bad enough they bought an exploder, but they bought a two wheel drive.
I've never set a tire under 35 psi and never will.
They probably brought it for tires at a tire place who told them about the bearing.
I did an oops when I drove with a broken steering gear in my Pontiac Grand Am. It either broke while towing it (i.e. roped to a truck in front of me, as the car was dead) to the dealership or at the dealership. Oh, and the battery exploded a few seconds after the mechanic put it on the charger, luckily he was about 15 feet away when it went bang. Though the shop guys did admit a change of pants may have been necessary, as it sounded like a shotgun going off.
Suffice to say, that car was sold shortly thereafter. In fairness, it was a good car, considering it had nearly 300k miles.
Looks like they wobble as bad as my front bearing hub assemblies on 2000's dodge ram 1500…might wanna replace rotors too as excessive of wear of bearings warps due to inconsistency of rotary motion on against brake pads, to much warping leads to worn out brake calipers cause so probably worn Shocks, Cause and Effect next will be shocks. Sure would be nice to not have to change parts on the ground with no cover.

Ray, awesome vid. I just did this on my ATV. It was recommended to use Loctite Bearing Mount on the new bearing to keep it locked in on the knuckle. First I had heard of this and I ended up doing it. Not sure if it applies to this bearing.
Went smoother than the last hub I had to remove off an “Exploder”. The torch put its work in that day lol.

Didn't see anyone else mention the "Rotation" direction of that front tire was wrong.
Those type of tire have a right and left… the "V" of the tread should always point in the direction of travel.
Great tires though! Just rotate them from front to back.

It was the TREAD Act of 2000 that brought in TPMS because of the Ford/Firestone debacle.
Sometimes you just have one of those days. You handled it well.
When installing snap rings, you have to put the round edge to the bearing. It is the proper way. They are made from stamps, so the sharp edge goes toward the outside. You should get some otc snap ring pliers with the holding locks.
To this day U-Haul won't rent you a trailer if you're towing with a Ford Explorer… not only this vintage but also for model years built long after the "roll over" problem was resolved.

Thanks goodness I changed front wheel bearing in a 2009 Dodge Caravan recently, and they are made in the hub and just bolt on….No pressing…
I think Firestone was poking the rubber bubbles out of the tires that’s why the esploded. They were supposed to throw it away if it got a bubble, not just poke it
No, No, No. . . . The term "Exploder came from the 1996 Ford Explorer. They tended to catch on fire. I don't remember if it was from the Brake Switch leak (a recall, I believe. I've slept since then) or what. But that's when the nickname "Exploder" came into being. (I had one, but it never had any fires. It just went through frame bushings. It really wasn't all that bad of a vehicle.)

Putting snap rings in requires concentration and manual dexterity. I noticed when you reached for the tool with your left hand, ever so slightly, you loosened your squeeze of the pliers enough to make a gap. Enjoy your humor and mechanical knowledge.

I love my 98 explorer. Best year imo, not the 5.0 but my little v6 can get going! Other than routine maintenance like new front suspension and brakes she’s never done me wrong in the 2 years I owned it.

The Firestone/Ford debacle also affected U Haul. You could not rent one of their trailers if you had an Exploder in certain model years that came with those tires. It didn’t matter if you had bought another brand of tire and put them on. If it was in that time frame year-wise, no go. Ask me how I know. Previously owned a 92 Exploder.
So how do you decide when to electrical clicks vs. actual clicks.. A few years back I over tightened a brake caliper sliding bolt (heli-coil for the fix) and from then on I was paranoid. I won't start a job without torque specs…

I must like dangerous vehicles, 92 Explorer was my first vehicle (well, an S10 really but I didn’t get to really drive it after we put a different engine in, and painted it. Sold it after). I really liked the Explorer, if it was a Explorer Saleen with the 5.0 I wouldn’t of sold it. Then I went to a Cobalt SS which had a recall for the key coming out and causing a locked steering wheel while you were still in motion causing a loss of all control, but that was fixed, and my Explorer never had stock Rims or Tires so 🤷🏼♂️ I just need to buy something that has a common habit of starting on Fire, and burning up. I almost bought a regular cab short box 2014 Dodge 1500 hemi, but it didn’t have the newer Automatic so didn’t get it, and a Dart before that. I was thinking a 2023-2024 Subaru WRX STi if they’d come out with a new body style/engine, or the new 2023-2024 Bronco Raptor looks interesting. My Aunt has a 94 Ford Mustang SVT Terminator in Mystique Color That I’d love to buy it’s won numerous awards.
I had a mechanic that didnt go the extra mile last week. eff'd up my AC clutch lead while installing a new alt in my 05 Murano . I had to re-sleeve it and change out the fuse. Dont be that guy Ray.

I'm afraid however i must point out that you seem to have missed that the ball joint boot on the sway bar link was leaking grease as you tapped it in… i have replaced a few wheel bearings myself, so i understand the pain of snap rings all too well lol.

I was coat everything down with Grease before I install the knuckle back together makes it easier the next time you need to disassemble anything ..but that’s just me!!
