Oh Six! I Do folks, it's the element there. She is freshly inspected. Let me show you a little something here. It's a bit of a rant video.

Here's the inspection paper from the shop: Uh, this thing failed. Uh, well. let's first of all, let's go up here. It passed the safety part.

It failed the emissions and at that point it had 111 254 on the clock and it's issued. 10 day was to 5 19. today is 7 19. so it's two months later.

Customer: States The car's been sitting. Uh, what was the date? Five Nine is when it was uh, originally inspected 111 254. So let's see how many miles this thing has gone. 111 770.

according to my calculations, it's 516 miles. Customer: States The engine light was on, shop fixed it and he had to keep driving it. hence the 500. Miles the money light remained on and that's why it ended up my shop because I actually needed it fixed.

They couldn't do the reset, you know, keep driving it bit I fixed the money light. The guy says, well just throw a slap the sticker on it I've already had it checked over for safety said yeah, let's get after that buddy. So let's have a look at 516 miles. Well what do we got here? That's got classic broken spring.

It's right up here. Coil springs broke off got pretty Rusty Uh in 516 miles? So boy that's quite a coincidence. You know, Holy Snackies! looks like it has a broken spring too. Look at that.

I Can't believe that 516 Miles snap that coil spring off. What the heck? Take a stroll underneath here. Oh man. I Sway bar link broke in the last 516 miles too.

I Cannot believe how this fondue is falling apart. I Like this one the best. You already have a listen. I Really Turn It yeah she's straight ground through the pad through the caliper in front.

If you guys can see the disc in there, probably not, but she looks like a record baby. You barely turned this. Oh awesome yeah, she's super super sweet. Let's send it only minor rust on this one yo.

I Know the funny part about this folks. Let me show you something. You see my sign up there: State Inspection sign registered motor vehicle New York City Inspector It's got black lettering on it. You know a little funny part about that black cluttering is I got written up for it by New York State and almost lost my license over it.

Why is that? Because I had white lettering on it instead of black? I actually had to take the sign down and change it because the color of the lettering was wrong and it was against the law. Yeah, we got this kind of being pulled all the time. Every freaking shop that brings a car here with the engine light on. This is what we deal with and I show you guys and you guys criticized me over it.

Some of you do, but it's just frustrating because here I am going to lose my license because I have the wrong colored letters on my sign. Yeah! I Got this shop giving it a stamp of approval that everything on this car is safe. Mind you, all the stuff that I showed you just failed in the past 516 miles and we know that's true and that'll be the excuse. I Could show this video to any New York State Inspector that comes in that audits our shop and they'll laugh at me and say you have a nice day, let me see your inspection reports.
Oh, you got one out of order. Guess what? We're going to rate you up. It's just a ramp folks. This kind of stuff just pisses me off and there's nothing that the state will do about it.

I Could call the 800 number around here for the 518 number and it doesn't matter. they won't do anything about it. The customer has to turn the shop in for doing a crappy job. But the people that take the cars like this to the shop.

This is what they want. They want a crappy job, They want a sticker and that's it. So needless to say I fixed the engine light I'll get paid for that and Adios! This guy will go down the road. He'll get the drive cycle done, they'll go back.

They'll slap a sticker on it. He'll have a nice day and uh, you folks, you have a nice day Foreign.

Any state that has state inspection for vehicles are scammers. These mechanics in those states just make up stuff to fail your vehicle. Not saying all mechanics do it but I know a scam when I see it. Talking to you Massachusetts

All state inspections are a royal scam. Get this, up until about 1980 or so the state of New Hampshire used to make you get your car inspected every six months but then somebody decided to be merciful and make it once a year. Iโ€™m so glad I live in a no inspection state.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mitch van Kesteren says:

Sounds like another govt employee justifying his job doing the bare minimum! Doesnโ€™t want to investigate a shop passing the shit car but can write a report that the colour of your numbers were wrong.. so typical

had a customer come to the shop one time for an inspection and failed for window tints. guy made a huge problem over it and was very pissed off so he took it to another shop that didnโ€™t care and just slapped the sticker on and sent the customer on his way. the customer at this point was satisfied but still mad as hell at the first shop that failed his car.
so he called dmv and filed a report against the shop that failed his car over window tints when the other shop passed him with no issue.
and ended up getting the shop that tried to do him a favor in very very big trouble. always do a full and complete inspection on whatever you are working on sometimes its not the car that will get you in trouble its the person that you are dealing with

I agree NYS safety inspections are a joke, lets get rid of them. If you don't maintain you vehicle guess what, eventually your car will break down and the problem will solve itself!!!!! Other states don't have inspections and data suggests that there are no higher instances of accidents or danger to the public??

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Thornbury says:

Sounds awfully similar to Pa inspection. Some days I don't know if I want to keep my license.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars djsi38t says:

Correction…Not the wrong colored letters on your sign…The wrong sign altogether. And those springs hardly make the vehicle unsafe for the road. That is the purpose of an inspection…not to be nitpicked over every tiny little thing that isnt factory perfect. The brakes and the sway bar on the other hand are very important for safety.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary W says:

Eric, you are obviously not "tipping" the state inspector properly. The other shop seems to.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark K says:

What is the sense of having registered state inspected garages then? That makes no sense. I live in Canada and the city I live in if you go to Midas Muffler for a out of province inspection and it fails and you do not authorize Midas to do the work, the disassemble some part of your braking system so you can not drive it and they call a tow truck to have it towed to where ever it needs to go. How do I know you ask. I used to be the one to tow these vehicles out. It is kind of dirty on Midas Mufflers parts but they are protecting their inspection license.

You think its bad in the PRNY? Should come to Columbus Ohio…we dont have inspections…the cars on the road are a nightmare to other drivers. Ive veen buying and selling and trading and fixing cars for over 14 years… the amount of cars that are just like this or worse that ive looked at over the years is sickening. And people dont care. They just want "freedom" but don't care about safety. And these same people put their kids in their cars…it makes me just as mad as you Eric. I have a son too, if theres any safety or structural issue, i won't touch it. If its not safe for my son, its not safe for me or others on the road

Just saw this. Idaho used to have safety inspections too. When they found out that people just wanted the sticker, they tied to come down on the inspection stations but they were Abe to show how stupid the damn law was. Most of the violators were the elected representatives who were mostly farmers. Only took three years for the law to be rescinded. Still donโ€™t have one and thatโ€™s been 40 years ago.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hola! Steady Eddie says:

Is your Safety Inspection program run by the State Police? It is in Maryland, and a shop or the vehicle owner can call the officer in charge of the area and request a re-inspection or lodge a complaint. Finding major safety issues that had just passed by another shop puts you in a bad position. But you still have to do what's right. And my State Troper said to me, " If I have to come here and put my overalls on someone is going to pay". It wasn't going to be me so nobody got a free pass. Not worth losing my license or having someone crash their car due to a problem that I recently passed.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars J.G. van Beilen says:

There's more behind the sticker than just being allowed to drive the car on the road. Someone gets killed in your approved car, is that something you want on your conscience? Good thing you take your responsibility seriously Eric, I'd go to you just for that. You tell me how to keep the car safe to drive.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John says:

There's only one criticism I have for Eric and that's living in New York State. It's a shame that it looks like a pretty nice and normal place, but the insane politics of the big cities control the state.

Meh, I love ya being open as your fans follow you for this reason. Just waiting to hear someone else see this frustration cultivate. I am a DYI and attempt to go through my vehicles prior to inspection here in NH, though I have to do my work in the dirt. When I go to get the sticker, the guy I bring it to lets me walk through the inspection with him and I am able to see what I missed which will cause a failure so that I can repair it and bring it back or if something might be getting close and will need to be done prior to the next year. As an example one inspection he pointed out that the hitch was getting a little sketchy and even though I don't tow often or anything heavy and it would not fail inspection for it I replaced it prior to the next years inspection. Not sure how many other DYIers do this.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Blueskiesmobileauto says:

There was once a small town south of Watkins glen (racetrack sticker on the windshield) where a NYSI station/shop would have an actual line of cars (not parked but in a line just like a drive tru) where folks would pay a guy x amount of dollars and they would get a sticker slap. This probably 20 years ago and I thought it was hilarious and cool screwing the system but after becoming a licensed NYSI inspector later in life I realized how dangerous it can be. (Once had a car towed in with a broken spring curling down into the tire which popped the tire) The rot boxes of NY never disappoint. Good laughs and lots of โ€œhooooly look at this one!โ€

Lick'm and Stick'm, out the door. Then, our neighbor to the South, SC. NO state inspection required. You wouldn't believe the smoking wrecks that come across the state line everyday making our air quality so bad we get fines from Uncle Same for air quality. Oh yeah, you know that smoke from Canada, yeah we will likely get fined for those days too. Its all caused by the white supremacist's and the racist layout of roads, highways, racist bridges and racist mathematics taught by our schools. ๐Ÿคฃ

Ok isnโ€™t government a wonderful idea that has turned out to be everything it shouldnโ€™t be. I am from nj now in Maryland. So I have seen both sides of the coin : inspection state stations to no inspection stations Maryland.
Maryland allows dark glass Which as a nj native hate because I believe it creates a dangerous situation so drivers can drive without care. I canโ€™t imagine a police man going up to car with dark glass so I assume this encourages police not to stop these drivers because they risk there life not being able to see the drivers about to do (guns). Nj would never allow this so state inspections are good in that respect. Plus nj state also checked brakes and lights. Good idea to see if you have proper brakes and lights. I have never understood how they allow present situations today with extremely bright blinding headlines Like idea of better head lites but not to the extreme that that they blind on coming cars!! Actually have โ€œ nite glassesโ€ to counter these lights. So who has approved these head lites???
Maryland does have inspections but only for emissions. So old cars are exempt only new ones?? Makes sense right. So they have inspections but checking for wrong thing as far as Safety concerned. ๐Ÿ˜‚. Ny has its inspections but obviously very ineffective. Safety should be top of list unfortunately some states have it others donโ€™t what a world.
Listen I love your show if I lived in ny state near you I would be your star client Keep up the good the good work donโ€™t let the โ€œyou know whatโ€™sโ€ get you down!!

Keep doing the right thing, because in the end these scammers will all regret doing the wrong thing. Blue states love to punish those that do it the right way, but in the end they will fail. Great video Eric keep up to good work!

Only one solution for that problem Mr. O, vacate the state of New York. Come to Wisconsin! Lot's of rust and no state inspections haha

I take my car to one shop and only one shop and tell them every time I will fix anything that fails and I want it done right. It is very hard to find places that do you right on these inspections I am finding. I do not want to have an unsafe car. I put my family in that car.

Man I love this rant. I can say I've witnessed the customer side of this in person (Rochester area Chevy dealership). One of our techs failed a 2011 low mile (aka rusty) Silverado for sway bar links. One was broken, the other was missing. Advisor came out, talked to the customer and he looked the advisor straight in the face and said "oh really? Well I was just under there the other day and I didn't see anything". It was one of those moments where I would have LOVED to chime in and say "If you were just under there as you state, then you would have clearly seen something wrong" but of course gotta keep my mouth shut (now if I was a customer in the waiting room, I totally would have). Advisor let him know we were going to fail it, and then I spent the next two minutes listening to him bitch "they always find something wrong" "of course the dealership is trying to rip me off" blah blah blah. Customers will never learn.

@southmainautorepairllc This is pretty ominous coming from Luis. Hope all is well. Migjt need to sic Mrs. O on 'em, eh? Seriously, my prayers gonout to uou and yours for hour safety. I've given up holdimg out for any form of sanity, but still figure your safety still isn't too much to pray for!

Related @rossmangroup – Sorry to hear you say "something in common" Luis. Thanks for looking out for others. Would love to work doing ANYTHING if you can get your 503c sorted. Maybe Ron Paul might be able to help? I don't know, but I recently learned of the "ronpaulcurriculum" program, and even as a middle age, and resonably intelligent man, I'd take the course just to brish up if I could afford to. Besides, I dropped public school, because it was not teaching me anything I hadn't already known since grade 7 or 8, so . . . I went to work instead. It was much more licrati e, and I startrd doing what I love again – LEARNING NEW THINGS!
Sorry my comment might seem all over the place folks. Then again, y'all probably already totally understand that these days anymore, eh?
    <sigh>
