I've seen a few leaking filters due to under-tightening and a couple fitted with double gaskets but I've never seen a properly fitted filter leaking like that. I can only surmise that the central boss on the filter has not been assembled with the thread perpendicular to the end plate. I'll bet if Ray had really overtightened it, as many garages do, then it would not have leaked. However, I would rather do the job correctly and then pick up on manufacturing defects after fitment.

So… do you just write off the oil filter/oil as a loss? Do you send it back to the company for quality assurance check? Do you cut it open and inspect? …or just toss it and move on?
That O2 sensor has just got to be just the right amount of in the way to not hose your job, but make it just a tiny bit more annoying than it needs to be. I always love that. It’s like they do it to spite you.

CQ reds are trash since advance bought out CQ. The Blues are still decent but not the Wix CQ had them. But the reds are shit man. Work for Advance PT but have my own “shop” too. F those things if you can avoid them.
Same thing happened to my brother a few years ago. He just swapped the engine in his truck and was buttoning up a few things while a friend did the oil and filter, they finished up and let it run for a bit before taking it for a quick test drive, the filter sprang a leak and he ended up locking up the engine a couple miles from home. It was an STP filter he got in an oil change deal AutoZone was running at the time. He ended up spinning a new filter on, and filling it back up with oil, then we dragged it around in gear and got the engine broke loose, it might have been a little worse for wear, but still ran surprisingly good afterwards.
I use high quality 20k mile rating Walmart oil filters 🤣. Jiffy lube over torque my oil pan bolt a while back and I just do myself now. Bought one of those nifty adapters that has a hose attachment. So I'll never have to take out bolt again. Oil changes are too expensive anymore and the places that advertise cheap ones will try like the devil to upsell you on something
On a semi-related experience, I just had some water plumbing done and everything was fine for 24 hours after service. Then leaks starting showing up. No big deal, called plumbers and they gladly came out to fix it. Luckily nothing was damaged. Stuff happens and not necessarily the techs fault. You can be sure I put water leak alarms all over the place after that though. At least a car can have a low oil engine light.
The poor mechanic working on my sons 2004 Silverado diesel! He has replaced the steering box and a few other parts twice now. What’s being turned out to parts stores seems to be junk.
I've seen a whole batch of bad filters. Multiple filters tried and they all blew oil past the gasket. Faulty antidrain backs at the inlet or faulty bypasses is all I can figure.
I had that once, on an 84 corolla. I changed the oil myself then on the way to work the oil light came on. I immediately turned it off and coasted to a stop. Got oil in it and the motor was hopajuped. She knocked until she didn't, it too looked as if there was nothing wrong with the seal. Now I only buy k&n filters no more fr……..

SHUT UP! …..Ray is the best mechanic I have seen in ages; he is thoughtful and goes far beyond what most mechanics do. And just so you all know I am a mechanic myself so I know! I would be happy to take my car to Ray .
Lets say this car would have run out of oil and ruined the engine. Maybe it took a week to do it. Do you replace the engine or does the shop say once that car leaves the shop its not their problem for any problems that come up like leaking filters or oil plugs or no oil in the engine. How many cars now days will warn of low oil or no oil pressure and shut down or not even start? Is that most cars or all cars?
No evidence of part being bad. Possible dirt left on the flange. Flushed away when removing filter. I always wipe flange to be sure it is clean before installing a new filter as dirt can collect around the seal between changes.

Oil filter housing is cracked.. when you screwed the filter on this go round you didnt put the torque on it like you did last time and it didnt open that crack back up this filter.. just saying has happened to me.. couldnt even see any cracks but when i put the twist on it even by hand, it would leak.. hell of a headache and a bunch of what the fucks but noticed it when i stuck my finger in the middle to see if something was stuck up in it and it pinched my glove.. was like hey thats not supposed to grab my glove.. and yep.. 40$ oil filter housing and boom theres your puddin..
Interesting comments but in the years I've been driving and owning many different cars, 42 years so far, I've never had any mechanic put all those different lubes on the filter. I'm not saying that was the issue even though Ray showed there was no leak initially, but perhaps the substance in those lubes caused a chemical reaction to the rubber gasket seal that may have shrunk or compromised it somehow.
As much as I enjoyed the carquest oil filters, I phased them out for Hastings. Every so often you get a large oil filter with a spot welded base plate and it leaks.

Being in the collision repair industry I occasionally get oil changes and I use panel bond on the oil filters and drain plugs……never fails. Lol
Maybe you put too many quarts of oil in the filter before installing

Some other shop had changed the filter, the one you show has red silicone, the one you took off had no silicone, someone playing you.

If an oil filter is defective some how, does the oil filter manufacture cover damages the the filter caused. Probably not. Thats what lawyers are for.

What was wrong with the filter? You can't do a video like this and not look at the filter for defects.

No evidence of part being bad. Possible dirt left on the flange. Flushed away when removing filter. I always wipe flange to be sure it is clean before installing a new filter as dirt can collect around the seal between changes.

I had a one of my company's Kenworth come back in to my shop for an oil leak. It too was coming from the seal 5,000 miles after installing it.
As much as I enjoyed the carquest oil filters, I phased them out for Hastings. Every so often you get a large oil filter with a spot welded base plate and it leaks.
