Now we've got the new sub frame rate from Subaru We need to transfer all the old rusty cracks in this one and put it on that one and then stick the thing back in. So let's get after it. See if you can't get this baby off, these are the ones.

We were hanging like that. We need to get our bolts out of the control arms. We're not reusing the control arms, but we need the hardware anyways. so let's get another some other notice.

there's that. Bolt and nut looks like a 19 mm. The bushings are tore right out of this sucker. So so that they're weird, you feel me right? 19 there? 19 there.
Let's grab our wrench in the head right here. There's a 19 variety That's a 17. That's the 19. Put that one in your pocket.
Let's just see. Oh, that's how you're gonna be right. The bushing. It's stuck.
I Should have bought those bolts knowing that you're a Subaru guy. Eric You worked on these things. That's okay. I'll show you another method.
Give it the old one. two barbecue. We use the torch a lot easier to do it here than it is in the car. I'll tell you that much.
Get in there fella. It's called the open end whittler. foreign belt two barbecue. Let's bring out the dog. that big nasty show you how the dog does that. Typically when these are in the car, you can't get up to the top of that bolt. get over there because well, because the car's in the way. So let's just see.
for Grins and Giggles put that nut on there spinner down a ways. Get your favorite 19 mil or go borrow it from a buddy. Let's just give it a little toot here. Oh man.

They do have an arrow on them points forward in case you forget. Done usually I Just go over to my guy Josh decided to steal his but he's over there so I can't You can only do it when you're not looking. We'll give it a little Spritz just in case. Not like it'll ever be out of there in the rest of its life. There's that. I'm coming here.
put the nut on. It's going to be the same thing on the other side and then essentially we can just and we can just tighten it where it's at. We're going to be so close on that bushing, it doesn't really matter unless you're super weird about that stuff. Oh, you stink pot.

We wouldn't be in this situation would You fella? Can't overdo it? I'd like to change your old pan now because it's out in the open. but I think we'll get this up in there and get it safe. Get safe. Let's go pull our ball joints out.

you know. I'm gonna take the axle nut off. set that to the side because you need excessive amounts of heat to get these bolts out. I'm sorry about my speech folks.
I Explained it on what's up Wednesday My speech is messed up. I'm going to set the axle to the side. don't even try that. suck without heat and snot out of it.
The bolts are extremely soft. ball joint in and you have to have it right just this side of the liquid to get it out. Trust me. Got lots of Subaru ball joints.
Last thing you want to do is snap it off. Foreign foreign. Watch that bolt on the other side make sure it's actually moving I Can't see and it is. But like I said, these things are soft as butter.
Foreign. just like that. so they don't really season the threads these. Siege right here on the straight part of the bowl.
I'll find the shank I Call it, they get locked right on this side and on the threads both places, but mostly here so you can spray all the spray you want to spray on it. I Don't care if you use your ATF training fluid stuff or your coil or your blaster. Whatever whatever flavor it is that is good, you can spray that settling on it. That works every time.
So we're going to take and yank the ball joint out of there. Now there we are. Ball joints out. Done deal.
all right. let's clean her out. let's get all the rusty junk out of there and we'll go up in there with a little flap wheel and go the rest of the way. All right that should be.
and then you know, clean up your bowl. obviously these rear stunts where it was hanging up I think it was about a couple of crap inside body holes here where the other bolts go. it's behind the seats actually. I got this thing's ever coming back out and get our steering shaft there? Oh oh hey dude.
all right I guess we're good to go I want two to our sun frame here? a little bit too foreign I think that's it folks. Uh, great to go. Well it's getting a try and it's a little bit of a few spots on this thing. Of course the fluid film heats up it kind of.
you know, really starts to creep blend so you don't get everything like 110. Don't worry about it, come back here today. it'll be all over everything and that's what I call part two, the switch over. We're gonna call it project Subaru So part one we removed the subframe part two which is this part you're watching.
We did the switch over and we're ready to put it back in and if you want to watch that process, you're going to come back for part three for what I called the put it in part or the installation I guess would be more proper. A lot of trouble to save a couple of bolts
I might be missing something but that sub frame doesn't look rotted out. Surface rust yes but from what I see there is no loss of structural integrity. I just don't understand new owners paying so much for new cars and not taking rust prevention measures. Waxoyl (fluid film in the USA) is so cheap and easy to apply to even the tightest of crevices that it's simply a no-brainer.

I'll admit, when I saw him using the torch on the bolt sleeves, my thought was (and is) "How does that affect the bolt tempering now?"
Liquid Wrench makes a newer product called: Liquid Wrench Penetrant and Lubricant. You can use it as a penetrant and as a lubricating prep for reinstalling the body and subframe bolts. So, for example, you could use it to free up the bolts about half way out then use again on the newly exposed threads, then temporarily reinstalled and then remove final. The spray will stay on the threads enough to make reassembly easier, and the prep is done in the removal stage. Also, if you want to add more lubricant before reinstall you can just use more of the same spray. Very handy.
Nothing a bit of JB Weld couldn't have fixed.

Y do you use a torque wrench that air gun will get it way tighten down more then any torque number will be .just blast them down .

Coming from a state where we don't salt the roads this rust is always shocking to me. But then again the shit they do put on our roads will strip the finish off your aluminum wheels almost as fast.
When you torch the bushing sleeve it gets the bolt pretty hot, maybe approaching the melting point. Are there any concerns with reducing the bolt strength by changing the metallurgy or oxidation? In general is it better to replace those if it is within your budget?
Thinnest welding gloves I have ever seen! Light weight, cheap, and don't lose your dexterity I suppose
We finally got our NY-native subframe stripped apart. I must say, that is the first time I've ever had to cut control arms off their mounts. Bolts were rust-welded into the bushing sleeves–for posterity.
note to self, next time I replace subframe, buy control arm replacement bolts

Heat and quench cheery red flood it with water works every time try it. I work on class 8 trucks in the salt belt Ontario Canada in Hamilton we work on the plows and spreaders sold them and in warranty have to fix the chassis. Man the brine and calcium no bolt heads left just bumps on a 4 year old machine A torch or grinder the only way. My daily driver a 2007 F150 soaked in oil since new now rusting a shame. longest vehicle lasted a 1991 Crown Vic bough it in 95 resealed the intake and valve covers a new water pump and t stat and tune up 5 k oil changes and 2010 gave it to my son I now having 2010 F150. He drove it to 2015 sold it to my neighbour died in 2018 with the 2015 oil in it ignorance is bliss.
Just wondering – is there a cost saving in torching out the two bolts vs buying them? In any case, I’m good with a torch and would probably torch them as well, but time and gaz… Awesome work as usual! Thank you, Eric. Is it really worth the time to get those crusty control arm bolts out vs buying new bolts?
Why not spray the fasteners with WD, PB Blaster or my favorite, Liquid Wrench?

I get the Fluid Film thing. I'm amazed that an 8 year old car needed a subframe. But I'd think every bolt would get anti-seize on it's entire length instead of just Fluid Film. Interested in your thoughts on this.
Fun fact!
Spraying fluid film or any lube on treads and surfaces that flange together (bolts and nuts) reduces the friction coefficient, which reduces the torque value required for fastening the parts together.

Rust obsolescence – It looks like rust is a real menus up there in NY. Worse than MI or OH.
Over 50 years since I was replacing sub frames on BMC minis and similar, rarely front because A series leaked oil so badly but rear ones all the time. Good job on the Subaru.

What's the reason a lot of cars have one of the wishbone bushes work in the opposite plane to the other? Like in this case, the rear-most bushing is horizontally mounted, while the front bushing is vertical. Does a horizontally-mounted bushing better absorb loads from the wishbone being pushed backward when driving or hitting bumps?
Why not just buy a new bolt rather than cutting them out with the torch?

Thanks for teaching me the sandpaper on the end of a drill truck. I used it to clean the slider boot holes, on My 97 dodge diesel.they where rusty enough to prevent the sliders from sliding freely in the boot. I just took My $5.00 drill from Walmart but one of my big drill bits on. Used bailing wire to secure a piece of sand paper on the drill bit and used 4 pieces cleaned all 4 holes like new. Fluid filmed the hole and around the boot. Cleaned all sliding points with a wire wheel on My angle grinder, and with a Dremel. Used caliber grease on all sliding points with new FF rated brake pads that cost 40 bucks. Old brake pads where still really thick but falling apart. Not from the backing plate. The friction material was separating from itself. I’ve had the truck 6 years those brakes came with it.

Serious question, how much would it have cost to change those two control arm bolts stuck in the control arm bushings? $6? Well worth it IMO. Better than breathing burned rubber and grease. Plus it took you like 10-15 minutes at $90 an hour it's actually cheaper just to replace the bolts.
When I put my ball joints out of the spindle, I always put wheel bearing grease or antiseize on them and in the spindle before I reassemble. These are my personal subarus. Officially you aren't supposed to add any grease. I've read this. But the pinch bolt holds the ball joint into the spindle with a groove in the joint. Surely, the pinch bolt can't jump the groove in the ball joint? I mean if all it takes is grease or antiseize to make it jump the groove, it's not really secure, right? And even if it jumped the groove, wouldn't the wheels have to come off the ground for the ball joint to fall out of the spindle?

Hi eric, You know I don't understand how these people on here say that job was not necessaries for that sub frame, That subframe was a piece of Swiss cheese There was no way that that was gonna pass inspection in New York. And let me tell you I think you said that job was $1800 That was a lot cheaper for having that done than having a car payment for 6 years of 5 to $600 a month. I honestly wish You were closer to me I need a new engine in my truck After 327000 miles It's time for a new engine I love my truck I love my Ford F150 I don't have anybody trustworthy around me that I can honestly say we'll do a good job. I think subaru and chevy seem to rust the worst without some sort of rust preventer, inhibitor, or stuff that makes you feel like your making a difference. Keep up the good work Mr. O. I appreciate all the knowledge and experience you share with the people.
I haven’t commented on a video in a while, but Eric has been my favorite YouTube channel for years. As a fellow tech the number one reason I could never consider having a YouTube channel is the disclosure he gives every video…. he has to do the job he was hired to do for the budget the customer has. If you don’t like see bolts zipped down with the impact or rusty parts reused you’ve clearly never wrenched professionally. I also love how much the shop grown over the years with the addition of fellow techs, new equipment, kitchen, etc. Much deserved for the best tech I’ve ever seen.
Years ago, I had a Subaru Legacy wagon. Garage put new transaxles and brakes on it, and then when I picked it up the guy told me the subframe was rotting out, car was gonna stop being safe to drive pretty soon, and it wasn't worth repairing. Tells me this hours after he did hundreds of dollars in work on it.
I sold the car cheap to a neighbor who was a mechanic and a welder, and he fixed it up somehow, more power to him. But you can bet I never went back to that garage. I would've liked to keep that wagon another five years . . . .

sir, how much to replace subaru bottom b/joints,, oh, about 400 bucks.. mate has an isuzu m u x, the engine mount craped, brand new, 10 th ks. went to get it replaced, go in thru sunroof, take out interior, remove body, 800 bucks later, for 1 fkn engine mount..cant beat old school sht..
eric,,take the saddle out, put 8 kg of horse sht in there in a pan,, its a basterd present,,we give stupid tools, items to friends, like a mini tool set to an engineer..this is part of an old joke,. boy wanted a horse for xmas, parents, who ever, filled his stocking with horse sht, they didnt want him to have a horse,, in the morning he runs into parents bedroom, all enthused,, wheres my horse hiding.. dissapointment plus..

Hi Eric, Thanks for a very entertaining set of videos, love to listen to your chat as you work, and we all learn a little something as we go along with you. Here in the UK I remember the days 50 or so years ago when I was replacing MIni and Austin 1100-1300 rear sub frames, the 1100, were the worst as the tended to rot out body around where the font mounts were, if they lasted 5-6 years they were doing well, some went on longer but it got almost all in the end.
fur da price of the oxy, & foul smell of burning bodies,,id buy 2 bolts..but then,,i like fire & its satifying to do..boilermaker, fixed dented rusty ships, structural, truck bodies..its an art, but fkn dirty..
