In this video I show the method I use to get the proper air gap on a GM crank sensor. It's an old trick my grandmother taught me and is a pretty fast method to use to make sure you are setting it to the proper limit. -Enjoy!

So if the space between the reluctor wheel and the sensor arent within speck will that cause a no spark?
I had same code, changed the crank shaft sensor and wasnt getting spark. It didnt come with and shims either.

Took son's truck sensor out and sure enough the ASE mechanic that rebuilt the engine did not shim the sensor, it had a gouge and scratch marks on it.
0.030 is minimum for the air gap I wonder what the maximum is, where do you get those spacers I can’t seem to locate any, I will look for a suitable washer. So if the face of the sensor is gouged from contacting the exciter wheel does that mean main bearing slop, or would a wearing timing chain cause this ?

Great tip about the air gap! I used play dough and measured. I had to use both shims to get the proper air gap. Truck started right up and my oil leak is gone! I also dropped the connector gasket and put it back on to the connector and had to repair the wires with liquid tape. Thanks for the video!
Go back to ge connector!!! I've been all over youtube. My connector on my 03 express had one of the wires completely hanging out. The only replacement connector I could find anywhere has all three wires white. Whoever designed it is an ass. I looked at the connector I cut off and the wires that are hanging and from the years of fading I cant really tell which go where but I'm pretty sure I just saw a purple wire in your background. Which wires for where?!? Who the hell makes an all white freaking connector???

Had the exact thing happen to my 2011 Nissan Versa. Took my mechanic a few tries but it finally threw a code for him. If it wasn't for the code, it might have been parts cannon time and he didn't want to do that.
Hello. I want to clean my position sensor on my 1999 Blazer 4.3l V6 AWD, because it is full of oil… When i pull it out and back in, is then a relearning nessecarry? Or only when i change it with a new one? Thanks!

Thousandths????? Gee, must be a very well made sensor, and the ECU must have excellent capacitor buffering. Honestly, 70 year old cars had accurate tachometers. I get it takes a lil more precision to get a nice square wave, but wow. Hideous engineering. Thankfully Eric is here with the tips.
Hi, Great tip! I just bought a sensor from A1, but am concerned, that the sensor is not held snugly in the retaining plate. I haven't installed it yet, but wonder if that play is 'not a concern' . The part is from Taiwan. Thanks for your great channel!
This was a great video! I’ve been watching a bunch of YouTube videos to learn how to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor after my OBDII scan tool showed a P0338 code on my 2000 ZR2. But then I thought, “How do I know if I need a shim? And how do I measure that distance?” Brilliant technique!! And I have a nice micrometer. Thanks a million!! PS: Do I need to do some kind of driving re-learn sequence to get the Blazer to properly use the new sensor? Thanks again!
Is it possible that the crank position sensor can be going bad without a code because I have replace all ignition parts as well as the fuel pump and I still get a cut off and most of the times it starts back up sometimes it's don't?

Had a similar issue with my 13' outback 3.6. Subaru has a shim kit but they want you to pay for it. Pretty ridiculous. They build a flaw into their vehicles but expect their customers to pick up the tab. The ultimate insult is that the kit is absurdly expensive. 60 bucks for a few gloried washers.

I have. 98 Silverado 5.7l. New distributor. Crank sensor plugs wires and pcm. Keeps frying coil packs and icms. Had it in a shop and they adjusted timing. But didn't fix the issue. Showing cam crank correlation code. And crank sensor variation not learned. Any help is appreciated
Miked mine on my 99 burb 5.7 and the closest i could get was with 2 x 3/4 inch copper compression gaskets that are .062 thick, same sensor
Never seen a shim with a sensor but that was all my problems except for the loose coil causing high primary volts. If not a ACDelco part, GET TWO lol Non GM parts are cheap becuse they didnt pass speck

Sort of related. Can't find either a crank or cam sensor at O'Reilly's? Doesn't show on their web site for a 1994 Chevy Silverado K1500 V8 5.7 4×4? Could it not have either?
Dont you need to allow for the o ring? The o ring will keep it from inserting all the way . we are talking thousanths right ? what say you?
It wasnt until my truck started shuttering that i was questioned if my sensor had shims or not. The previous owner did not have shims so when i ordered a new crank sensor i just pulled it out and put the new one. It started shuttering so i changed out the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel lines, plugs, wires, distributor and just went ahead and put a new timing chain while i was at it. What a waste of time after watching this video come to find out some sensors dont come with shims, so they were put on and wham, it runs now. SMDH.
the piece I have must have broke in the hole.. The one that came out is smaller then the replacement? Do they seperate? Or do I grab whats in there and pull on it? It looks like the piece in there is metal? Nobody can answer this yet..

A side note to anyone that cares. I was getting a p0300 code on my 2002 chevy silverado. Took it to 3 mechanics, couldn't solve it. I replaced my crank sensor after researching as much as possible. Wasn't throwing a crank code at all. Fixed my p0300. Finally a mechanic says it! Thanks Mr. O!
I have the same problem in my crysler town and country 2010 and just noticed 2 lines in the sensor is this why they want the shim done

I'm working on 08 and im like sma I hope there is a video! Stalled only when hot…212 at idle sitting g at idle for 10 seconds or more maybe 20…30 lol it dies for sure after time…hot.
I'm doing this same job on my 99 Tahoe with a 5.7 vortec do I have to have some relearn procedure done after installing the new sensor?
Maybe I could do if you can do it, had I been down the same road as you, but I haven't.

Great video. I am in the same exact scenario. I was wondering if you could relay the pinouts with color codes. Only the center yellow wire is connected the other two are detached. The replacement part by BWD has all white wires (ABC) and no schematic. Supplier was no help.
