This is a short video describing how to replace both bearings on the viscous couple in the rear differential of a Pontiac Vibe / Toyota Matrix AWD. This is very common with these cars and usually goes miss diagnosed as a bad rear wheel bearing or a bad differential bearing. Make sure if you are not comfortable with this procedure to take your vehicle to a professional local shop to have it repaired.

Fixed my problem but ended up breaking of the bolts of the top two for the housing :/

I always wondered why my 4WD matrix never chirped tires at low speeds I guess this is why. Cool, learn something new every day, didn’t even know diffs had viscous couplers
Great video….I am just about to buy a 2011 Matrix AWD 2.4l . Any advice on this system in the 2011 compared to the one you show in this video? I have been told by a mechanic that the key to keeping the seals from leaking is to make sure the breather stays clean and opened. What is your opinion? thank you again.

I have a 2009 matrix with no awd, the awd light is on, don't hear any noise though, bearing replacement time?
Front bearing the size is 95*120*17mm. the item number is NSK 95DSF01
Rear bearing in the coupler that product number is NSK 61911

I used an ABS pipe that fit perfectly on the inner race. Worked perfect. I made. A similar tool for the larger bearing using a plastic bowl.
Would that part fit on a 2006 matrix awd driver .. my car has front wheel drive

I have an '09 vibe AWD and its making a noise as well. The description is as follows:
Only happens at speeds between 30-50mph
only happens on light acceleration; when applying more throttle the noise stops completely, when off the throttle it doesn't happen
things to note: 4-speed transmission shifts smoothly into all gears, including overdrive as I continue to accelerate; the noise only occurs shortly after a gear change happens when i let off throttle and reapply throttle.
I'm sure it isnt the rear wheel bearings, because the noise would occur more regularly

there is nothing else wrong with the car (other than it has the 2AZ-FE, fix it free toyota pls)

This procedure works for newer Toyota rear couplers that are not viscous anymore, just electrical controlled couplers (friction pack).
We run a repair shop and have a 2009 Matrix doing this. I called Toyota about getting the bearings they tell me it is a whole unit and we can not get the bearings separate from the coupler assembly. Any thoughts?
So, I screwed up and ended up hitting the transmission coupler with a hammer, instead of the brass drift. It was only once, but it left a good mark where the drive shaft bolts to the transmission coupler. Does anyone think this will be a problem? I had 2x4s set up like in the video, and when I hit the brass drift, the 2×4 on one side gave away, and POW. Nothing cracked, but there's a good outline where the hammer hit.
I can not seem to find these bearings. I have a 2013 Sienna AWD and the viscous coupler is grinding bad.
How many miles were on the car at the ti e of the bearing failure.

I was quoted over 3000 to replace the rear differential in our 2006 Matrix. I followed your lead and replaced the bearings. It ended up costing around 300.00. Worked like a charm. Parts were hard to find. It saved us thousands and I did it myself. I could only find the parts on eBay. Toyota wanted to sell me a whole differential. Thank you.
I know this is a older video but i have a 03 Pontiac aztek awd i think the bearing in the same area i was wondering if you thought it would use the same part numbers that you used and thank you for your videos they are very helpful and interesting
Bought my 03 vibe with this problem 123k miles took to over 4 places before they finally understood this had no direct correlation between repairing the BEARINGS and not the rear differential or the viscous couple ! Make sure they know you know what you're talking about ! Cheers

is there somthing that can bind wile cornering to make a humming or grinding sound.? something is binding, it slows the van a bit and pulls in the steering wheel too (06 buick terraza AWD )
