need a 12 volt battery for a 2004 toyota prius. Could I just buy a barrery from walmart that fits?

I know this is 7 years late, but my friend thanks you for this video. It just saved him a ton of money on his Prius. His MFD was 'rebooting' and flashing nonstop. Turned out his 12v battery was failing (the display needs over 11.6v to run.) The stealership wanted almost $1600 to replace the battery and the display. This video saved him $1400.

hi Eric, stumbled upon your channel not long ago and have subscribed. enjoyning your channel in my shop as i enjoy my cigar and whikey during these cold months in Canada,,montreal to be exact. you have good content. keep it up.
crazy places for batteries to be. i guess for such an easy job these motor companies figure lets put labor into it so diy yourselfer would take it to dealers so the can make money. think about the difficulties trying to boost your car in these cold climates.. would never purchase such a car unless it is located under the hood. keep well

I recently took over an old 2007 Prius so this is perfect video for me. I know this has been an older video, but I hope I can still get a reply. Is there anything need to be done with the onborad computer or ECU (I think this what it is called) after replacing the battery?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robin Wheatley says:

As others have said, you are so much more natural now doing your videos, the old ones you were very stiff/matter of fact only.

I folded down my back seats and just threw everything from the trunk area on top of them, and then put my laptop on them, too. Watched this video and used it step by step to replace the battery. Everything went perfectly, very easy. I really appreciate this video. Thank you.

I actually came to this video to see how to remove the red plastic part that covers the positive terminal as another video didn't have it. Thanks for showing how to remove it safely.

What size sockets and wrench do you need? I have to change out a bad battery on a 2009 Prius in a distant location from where my tools are stored. An in-laws tool are about 50 miles round trip from the Prius. My tools are over 3,000 miles away from the Prius. So, it would be very helpful to know the sizes of the sockets and wrenches.

The hatch release is very annoying to open manually when the battery is dead. The brain dead Prius design could have had a trunk release switch by the driver’s door, like almost all other cars, but the design engineers failed to have a trunk release switch next to the driver’s door.

Ridiculous design !! I bought a 68 Nova for $ 275.00, and it took me a little over 2 minutes to change that battery !! That's when cars were cars !!

Thank you…your video made my swap out of the 12v battery on my 05 prius easy. I had an 84 month battery in it…it lasted 106 months. Bought the correct 12v battery on amazon and replaced in 30 minutes.

My 2008 Prius 12v battery died after 12 years. Watched your video and got a new battery. Taking it all apart without the proper tools especially the small pink or red plastic cover over the positive terminal was a challenge but got it in the end. Very clear instructions. And bingo it worked. Well done mate.

So I fixed my car! Water intrusion had wiped out the 12v battery. I've ended up cutting away the interior soft furnishings over the battery as they were almost rotten. At 16 years old it really doesn't matter what it looks like! Once dry I can fix it back in and the felt can be replaced easily if it is smelly or too rotten . I could see exactly the pathway the water had taken and it had obviously been leaking for a while as there is a tide mark 2" up the battery well. I've used heavy duty outdoor builder's sealant in the cracks I found around the hatch – thanks to some other YouTubers for a heads up on their common location! With the soft furnishings out of the way I can see if I've fixed the leak – won't be long – Manchester UK = biblical rain on a regular basis 🙄 It was not an easy job to change the battery but I refused to be beaten by the awkwardness of it's positioning! I can make a wedding dress so I can surely tackle this! Anyway, took it for a spin around and was slightly worried at first – the hybrid battery started at full blue but then dropped to the last blue before it goes red so I headed for our motorway ring road and as I'd hoped I soon got the green lights which stayed for most of the rest of my journey! I think it is safe to say that the hybrid battery is perfectly healthy and the central locking which had failed completely just started back up again! It really is one awesome car! We'd decided to downsize but maybe not just yet 😆 A massive thank you to all the wonderful people who share their skills and help us to be self sufficient in looking after our aged cars and save the environment from all the scrap and the emissions generated by the building of new cars – you are truly awesome!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars HeyHeyTheCat says:

Dealer quoted $450. This is really a simple 15min diy job. Buy the battery from OReilly/Autozone $218, or Amazon $157.

Thank you for the instructions. Can you please tell me if the hybrid battery can be damaged in case the car is working with a non-Toyota 12V battery? (A damn mechanic did that to my Prius; he replaced the 12V battery with a non-Toyota Prius 12V battery, and I was driving around with that shit battery for a year and a half. At that time the 12V battery went bad twice! The 1st time he recharged it and said it was ok, so I continued to drive with this non-suitable 12V battery! The 2nd time the 12V battery wouldn't get charged, so he asked Toyota, and only now he figured out that he should had placed a Toyota Prius 12V battery, instead of the one he did!) So now, I am worried this might have affected in any way the hybrid battery! Could that have happened? Please let me know if you have any information on this.

(I still haven't gotten the car fixed, to check the hybrid system. Waiting for the proper battery to be deliverd!)

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Masaud Akhter says:

how to know which battery is not working for prius?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ferndog1461 says:

We own a 07 Prius. Sitting in your Prius, with your car in accessories mode, is terrible on the 12 volt . If you are wanting to listen to the stereo, just keep your Prius on, in " READY " mode. Btw, if your Prius has cel codes on the dash & doesn't want to go, just disconnect the 12 volt battery for ten minutes, that should let you drive, conservative, to safe location. Peace.
