    You know you don't have to replace the entire axle just because it has a bad boot right? If the actual CV joint is still solid there are tools out there that let you replace the boot for a fraction of the cost of changing the whole axle. Actually that said you can replace the boots with just a funnel if you get the stretch-a-boot and they only cost about 20 bucks and all that fighting to get the shaft out of the transmision could have been avoided.

    Great vid, wish I had a mechanic like you over in my neck of the woods. They all seem to be money grabbing a-holes that want to replace a transmission, half the engine and repair the AC when you take a car in for a simple job you don't want to do yourself – but end up doing it anyway.

    I see you're getting more Milwaukee tools. You need a big M18 impact to replace the quaint Rigid that seems to offer so little torque that you need to start removing those CV/Hub bolts by hand. Back in the day when big compressors and a big Ingersol Rand gun was king I did sheer off such a bolt but the big battery impacts seem to be less violent (hence less kick back) but still as effective. My M18 1/2" impact, along with the right angled M12 you have there, were the best tool purchases I've ever made. The big gun is Godlike. If you are venturing into the world of M18, get the tool and the biggest battery you can afford. The bigger batteries do offer more torque on the impacts if you have to wail on a bolt for a while (like 10 seconds or more – which is rare for those guns).

    One of my instructors gave me a tip about these stuck axles bc my partner and I were trying to get a axle out on a 2007 CRV and he had my partner use an air hammer (lightly) and me with a pry bar to break the rust free and loosen it out it worked really well. Not trying to say you’re doing anything wrong you’re a great technician and I’m just a novice.

    I always use a large hammer to remove tierods. Whack the suspension housing, not the tierod and 9/10 times to jolt will free the tierod without damage. The housing kinda bites the tierod thread under load and the jolt frees this.

    I did a complete brake job on my 1999 dodge ram van, 2500, I replaced everything, had to take it for state inspection, get a a guy who comes out, and says I need a complete brake service to pass state inspection, I said nope I just did a all around brake service, yesterday, it doesn't need brakes to pass, to which the shop guy said well we didn't really check em yet, to which I said, then how did you know it needed a all around brake job, he didn't answer, and walked away, I got the van back fully inspected, I reported the shop, and they have since went out of business, I shared my bad time, to every local forum I could, couldn't of happen to a nicer place.

    Hey Ray, Big fan of your content. You're funny, but yet knowledgeable way of fixing things is just a "kick in the pants" lol I just wanted to give a little story about having a tire shop…. cough Firestone cough try to use "scare tactics" to make me spend money at their establishment. I wanted them to check the tire pressure, or change a tire out, on my Chevy Cavalier, at the time, and they thought they would try to tell me that the Master Cylinder was leaking brake fluid all over, I knew that it wasn't, so I told them to take my car down and I will take it home and decide that for myself, they told me that they "don't suggest me driving it until that part was fixed" and I told them to take it down now, reluctantly they did and when I got home I took the tires off and the rotors were dry as a Bone. I no longer trust or shop at said place 🙂 Keep up the good work, and showing that not all mechanics are money hungry or crappy at their job. Have a Good Day.

    When them damn snap rings really don't want to let go I'll cut the inner CV boot and remove the shaft/bearings from the inner CV cup and get my slide hammer with the 3 jaw puller adaptor. Works like a charm.

    I had the same problem like 3 or 4 times before here in my shop getting an axle out of a car. I used a ratchet strap and wrapped it around between the trans. and the cv joint and attached to outer part of control arm. I tightened up the ratchet strap and then tapped the cv joint with a hammer and she popped right out. The reason for using the strap was because I thought I might brake the aluminum housing of the trans. if I persisted in using the pry bar tools to get it out. I'm not at all trying to tell you how to do your job, just giving a little info. to you to try the next time you might encounter that same issue. 🙂 Good videos

    Great honesty which gets Rainman a gold star. Secondly, a piece of cake to do axles on this VW. Well, except for the extraction difficulty. But they have been in there for a few miles and they seemed at home there. A second gold star is issued to VW for not making the process a pain in the rear and requiring a bunch of special factory tools to get it apart. Thanks VW! Honda, were you paying attention?

    I drove from Texas to Montana and brought my Tundra in to the Toyota dealership for the rust recall while there. I didn't live near a Toyota dealership back home. Not only did they not complete the recall by rust-proofing the frame while reporting to Toyota that they had done so, they also tried to sell me this very same job for $1700. They told me I would be lucky to make it back home if I didn't do it immediately, despite the truck working flawlessly on the trip up. I had them show me the cv axles, and they were in about the same condition as this car. I declined, made it home fine, and my husband and his dad did it for about $20 in parts and an afternoon in the driveway.
