In this video we have a look at a Chevrolet Silverado that has had the Ziebart undercoating sprayed on it every year since it was new. In our experience here in the salt belt this type of rubberized undercoating WILL DESTROY your vehicle. Unfortunately this vehicle will not make it past ten years old before the frame is completely rotted in half, despite the customer doing what he thought was right. Be sure to do your research folks before applying any type of "coating" under your vehicle.

I think this is a horse and cart scenario..
    1. I think putting undercoat paint on a NON RUST DAMAGE SURFACE IS FINE

    2. I think many people PUT THE COAT ON TO HIDE ALREADY RUSTED DAMAGE.

1 will protect your car as it creates a water barrierโ€ฆ 2. Will hide rust damage and prevent proper maintenance as is probably the case in this car shown

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The Boss says:

It appears to me that the undercoating was put on over existing rust which is not a good idea.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seraphim401 says:

    Thanks for the warning.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kurt nulf says:

Rusty Jones went out of business years ago I`m surprised to hear that Ziebart is still around destroying cars You think after all these years That people would have learned about what crap it is You need to use NHOL Woolwax or Fluid Film or move down south

    Dodged a bullet. Thanks.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Silverbliss says:

I made a big mistake putting the Z undercoating on my 2014 silverado. Fortunately I got it off, it mostly fell off, using a needle scaler, scrapers etc. It was a rusty mess underneath. Cleaned it all off and used rustoleum rust reformer and black spray paint. I was the damage was minimal. I have used fluid film inside the frame box and now CRC Marine coating is my new favorite. So don't do the Z coating you will regret it. I agree ๐Ÿ‘. Joe

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Rockett says:

Wow, what a MESS. What are your thoughts on if somebody ONLY did it to the plastic wheel well liners to try to knock down a little bit of the road noise? Plastic won't rust. It seems like a decent amount of road noise would come through a car's wheel wells.

I have a minivan that has a very annoying rattle/flapping noise at highway speeds. I figured out that it's coming from where two pieces of wheel well liner overlap. There IS still a fastener attaching the two pieces, but for some reason, there's just enough play in it that at highway speeds the two pieces of liner move with respect to each other enough that they cause a flapping noise to be translated (quite loudly) into the cabin.

On a temporary basis, I've stuff some foam in between the two overlapping sections of wheel well liner (which makes the flapping noise go away), but the foam always eventually dislodges. I'm thinking of just using some undercoating / truck bed liner spray to spray the wheel well liners (JUST THE PLASTIC LINERS). Seems like I would not only get the benefit of no flapping noises, but I would also get a little benefit from having the whole liners sprayed, as I would imagine a lot of "regular" road noise passes through the wheel wells into a car's cabin. It IS after all the straightest shot from the point the tire contacts the road to the driver's ears. Thoughts on spraying JUST the PLASTIC LINERS?

Guess the car rides on an icy area or areas with salt.happens to my friend in Manila who lives near a saltwater area. Underneath the rubber coat is a lot of rust. Some said that u have to clean it first and apply primer before putting undercoats

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrWolfSnack says:

there is nothing wrong with rustproofing your truck or car. the problem is people do not do it correctly. semi truck companies have the trucks taken to the frame and rustproofed before they enter fleet service. school buses the same thing. they never rust or decay. this job was not done properly or correctly at all. all that was done was it was sprayed haphazardly over top of rust.

if you rustproof your car it MUST be stripped to the chassis and the body and frame must be coated separately.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars zig pig says:

Fluid Film is great (Ziebart In The Pics Sucks) However Fluid Film is NOT an oil based product it is Pure LANOLIN, same with Wool Wax. These are NOT oil Based

Actually, Need To Check It Frequently… Every 3-5 Month Once… Not Just Spray And Let It Be For 5 Years Before Check It Back… Lol… Haha… By The Way, Thats Really Bad Condition…

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ruled1990 says:

I typically stay up on cleaning my vehicles and cleaning underneath with pressure washer attachment all winter/spring and some in summer and it keeps me mostly rust free. A lot of work but it's worth it. Grand cherokee, charger, and journey

When I was in school, I worked on a customer's Chevy. He had drained the rear diff fluid and never refilled it, so the bearing had seized and had evidence it was glowing cherry red. As I was working I noticed some black goo on my hand, guy had gotten an underbody protection that didn't harden, nasty stuff.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jared Freeland says:

The fact it comes off so easily shows it was obviously put on over areas which already had rust on them, or perhaps were still wet or greasy so it never stuck properly. When doing this you need to make damn sure everywhere it goes has been cleaned, degreased with methalated spirits or wax & grease remover, and properly dried out prior to application. You also want to spray cavity wax into the frames, outriggers or anything else that can't be undersealed – otherwise they will rot from the inside. Most underseal products like Zeibart are fine when applied properly – I don't care what the dealership/mechanic told your friend about his truck, this stuff obviously wasn't.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Klegolas says:

What if you have many new layers of proper paint at top of metal. before rubberized coating to give extra protection against flying debris from tires or etc???

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Hammer Fight says:

this will happen when you put the protection against rust. You should: wash the car chassis, remove all rust, apply a rust inhibitor, apply an epoxy primer and only the final protection

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Trev8282 says:

See I use rust check and itโ€™s not like this shit lol

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Lester says:

Doesn't look like this truck wasn't prepared properly first before it was sprayed. Seen this done a hundred times before. I never had this happen to me. Just need to take all the time it takes to get the best finish!!!!!!.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dongsheng Di says:

Why car manufacturers don't use plastic or Ceramic materials ?
Why not use something that never Rusts ???

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bence Locher says:

Ruberized coating is a really great rust preventing material! The only problem is that many people spray it on the rust, before removing and coating it with this stuff. Otherwise it'll ruin your car, just like that car in the video

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wet Hook Fever says:

This is not the same thing as the rustolium undercoat. This is sprayed on, like bed coating, it goes on thick. Problem is itโ€™s great till it cracks and water gets under the undercoat holding moisture. Rattle can undercoat is just a light coat that helps stop rust. It will however rub off over time. It doesnโ€™t go on thick enough to cause this issue. This stuff is bad news in the rust belt states.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars INTERNA9 says:

    You just saved me

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kyle Davis says:

Thanks for the video. I was about to take my car in to get LineX coated, but I think I'll steer clear after seeing this. Do you have any thoughts on CRC? I've seen a video comparison of a guy trying different rust prevention products, and seemed like CRC was performing the best of them. But who knows, could have been an elaborate ad.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Goodman says:

Much appreciated!!! Took one minute and damn no-brainer! Woolwax, or the fluid!

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carl Andrews says:

My old Camry was rubber undercoated, maybe from the factory, and yay thing lasted forever in Maine. Salt on roads

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Carran says:

I agree, its about like having termites in wood!!!

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Guds777 says:

Start demanding all the manufacturers to start hot dip galvanizing everything underneath cars. At least on the frame and support structure. I know it would add on weight but if it is done correctly and in the right places underneath the car we wouldn't see this kind of mess. Why do you think street light posts and balcony frames and handrails that are hot galvanised can be rust free for many decades. Rust rotting is a deathtrap. Itยดs like both the industry and the government think that everyone can just buy new car for tens of thousands of dollars every ten years or so, in what world are those mothefuckers living in…

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mitchtavio says:

Surprised Ziebart hasnt been sued into bankruptcy for fraud.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wjsj69 says:

Same deal with powder coating. ..easier and cheaper than paint, but the metal rots away underneath wherever water finds its way in. And if you try to save it, the remaining powder coat (plasitc) is very hard to remove. ๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘Ž

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Benjamin Buyanza says:

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Anthony Coxx says:

Click Bait Title to video. Intentionally misleading the viewer. If you specifically referencing Ziebart Coatings then say so! Otherwise you are including all other makers of Rubberized Undercoating companies. Also makes you untrustworthy!

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Fennell says:

Thanks for that , Good to know!

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brandon68plus1 says:

How come Linex or other spray in bed liners work so well and don't hold moisture underneath but these undercoatings do? Just a thought

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DickieRadd says:

I searched for how to apply this. Instead, I found this video and you saved me. Thank you so much.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stephen Walsh says:

So if you happen to have a car/truck with this sprayed underneath – and there is rust trapped under the rubber – is the process to remove this entire application, and repair/reapply something different? Who would undertake this type of job?

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kevin White says:

    What about waxoyl?

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars OutDoorLiving says:

@SouthMainAutoRepairLLC Or can anyone in the comment section fill me in about Cosmoline RP 342, because I no less than zero about rust proofing, thats why im here watching and asking asking if Cosmoline RP 342 a rubberised rust proofing spray?

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars rocel de torres says:

So what can you suggest intead? because i am actually planning of doing the same undercoating on my car's under chassis.thank u

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fixitall Paul says:

Undercoat can be removed with a liquid CO2 blasting.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fixitall Paul says:

Most of those rubberized under coats specify they need a topcoat of paint. Its all garbage.
I wonder how a hydrophobic spray would fare over time.

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars goodman854 says:

Should be a class action lawsuit on them!

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jose Alberto Rosa-Suliveres says:

Super great advice!! Most all auto parts stores in my area erroneously highly recommend rubberized undercoating to prevent rust and in their store reviews give themselves 4.9 out of 5 stars!!! Thanks for exposing their lies!! Most High end high quality body shops only recommend cosmoline oil wax protection or Amazoil MP HD metal protector and they do work. Mercedes Benz and other high end manufacturers used this rubberized undercoating in the early seventies and their floorplans rusted like crazy in Puerto Rico in the seventies, now they don't use it no more. Oils and wax sealers actually work for best rust protection!! Auto parts stores are selling to much crap like this POS rubberized undercoating that promotes and accelerates rust. Thanks for telling the truth ๐Ÿ‘
