Why are the bolts purple? Is it to show they’ve been replaced, or are they OEM parts?
Just watched this one, Ray. Under the circumstances, what you did with the equipment on hand and under the time pressure you must have felt, was commendable. Not a training video, for sure, but an exciting one. I didn't realise I was holding my breath until you shoved home that last bolt on the spring arm.

Those cheapo U-bolt style spring compressors people use to lower their car might be good for this.
I don't like osha. They make a 5 hour job take 20 days.
Should have used the ratchet strap to tie the car down.
When the job takes 5 times longer because an inexpensive tool designed for it was not used. This episode was sponsored by the writers of Faces of Death. I had this problem before on a Toyota, I found the best ways to assemble the steering knuckle lower the car down and push the inner control arm up using the weight of the car engine to align it. This is the second time that I've edited my comment because it just dawned on me that it was a 95 Mustang not a Toyota. Thus the engine weight

Ray I had the same issue /an air suspension to coil spring job ,on the rear of a E 55 Mercedes AMG . The car kept lifting as I tried to compress the spring .I used The Weight of The car to my advantage by doing the final hookup of the control arm .With my Trusty Snap on Red handle pry bar.
I finally got the holes to line up and banged in The bolt .It got stuck 3/4 of the way through. My second smaller Black Handle Snap On pry bar did the trick and I got the nut on ! This is typical of coil spring replacement {I hate doing them } . I only like doing Leaf springs more ! [NO!]
Now I can apreciate more the well known saying 'it must have been a Friday afternoon job' 😉

Is there actually some reason why you didn't just use a bolt style spring compressor? Or are you just messing with us (like you sometimes do) by choosing the absolute hardest way to do something?

I would Use the bearing press to collapse the spring, Then add some thick Zip-Ties (1/2" wide Cop Handcuff Type") or (Safety Wire) to keep the spring shorter… Then Install Spring, and Cut ✂️ the Thicker Zip-Ties to release pressure…

Hi Ray having done this repair many times in Australia watching you do this repair with my but cheeks clamped so tight and my heart in my mouth I am surprised you are still alive. The spring compressor we have are two threaded rods with clamps which compresses the spring however like you said 90 % of the time they get in the way. So what we do is compress the spring in a press and tie with tie wire multiple times insert the spring,assemble everything then with side cutters or bolt cutters cut the tie wire one by one with no danger involved
I need a drink after watching this. Felt this way when I was working under a vehicle changing the transmission and it almost fell off the jack on my head. I had to call it for the day after that.

Yeah man you totally earned a generous helping of reeeeee in this one. Beside the obvious "get the right tool for the job", maybe this is a good opportunity to pause and reflect on things like "how will this move when I put pressure on it?", "how will the angles change when it moves?" and "how will the points of contact change when the angles change?". These all add up to the main kicker "which direction will this thing slip once it has a great deal of pressure on it?", and if you have those down, you are at much less risk of causing an unnecessary accident. That said thank you so much for these videos Ray! I'm learning a lot from you, and I appreciate very much that you also show what didn't go to plan. Showing off your mistakes so others don't have to make them is very helpful and very generous! I'm happy you have the courage to do it!
Horrible fright literally sells a decent spring compressor for 60 bucks…
Good lord man.. use a spring compressor. You're going to get yourself, or someone else killed using shade tree mechanic techniques like this. Proper tool for the job.

The right tools are not being utilized for property installation of this particular situation, and slowing the process down greatly for your coil sping installation! In other words, you're performing as a backwards Mechanix. At the rate that you're going, might not survive life long. Don't wanna see your last video from overbearing push to nought

a jack stand under the front of car would stabilize it on the lift.
Ray ,why do you not own a spring compressor ? .I have 2 sets and wouldn't be without them. The whole time you were fighting with that last spring, I think I completely forgot to breathe. I was expecting to see some fingers lying twitching on the floor, but I am happy that you got it done without injury. I really don't like injuries, they hurt .that's for a very entertaining (and dangerous) video. Cheers from Australia.

Dude.. buy yourself some old school spring lift clamps.. when used in reverse they will compress the spring
For as much as I have enjoyed your videos this past week of binging them, this one really kind of frustrated me. I know you did not want to spend money on a compressor, but then your attempts to shield your partner, or anyone in that shop in all honesty, were feeble, and in the case of your partner, malicious because he has no clue what damage that spring can do. To top it off, you are a source for DIY'ers to see how things are done, and when they see a professional dancing around like a monkey, being the dumb mob humans they are, they will follow suit. Just buy the tools that will get the job done right, and safe. If you do not, any damage done to others near you is all on your shoulders, and I think you take that knowledge just a bit too lightly from the things you say on camera. You may truly have a different view, but your vocal thoughts and actions caught by the lens show a lack of actual care.
I love the end “I had to do what I had to do to get my job done” and that’s it right there the end result it don’t matter how you get there as long as you get there. Don’t worry about all the “arm chair mechanics” who say “use a spring compressor” those tools were made for use in a perfect environment. Until someone is in that position nobody really knows how to handle that
Anytime your working on springs like this, I highly suggest getting a strut spring compressor set. It would have really helped you out here and Been a heck of alot safer. Also so your not lifting the car off the lift, get another one of those Jack's under the other side of the car. It'll help put pressure down on the side your working on.
no REEEE, no suggestions, just gotta commend you on that while the way you did that was a little crazy and a lotta dangerous you were still SMART about it! always being aware of the whole situation, seeing what was working or not working, and concern for your coworkers safety showed how talented of a mechanic you are. great job Ray, I stayed up way too late to finish watching but it was worth it

If you are too broke to buy a compressor, would it work to lower the lift instead of raising the tranny jack?
Oh man I wish I could have been there. My small amount of auto experience and years of Boilermaking would have made this so much safer.
If you ever want something nice for jobs like this grab a 1/4 ton come along.
Basketing the lower control arm with the strap would have been better as well.
Putting 1 or two stands at opposite end of vehicle would have prevented the vehicle from lifting up when you compressed spring with lift.
This is by far the scariest video you've uploaded. 25mins of pure anxiety.
