The wife had an 03 Gran Prix with the same issue, there was a switch in the center console that went bad. Good catch, I would have jumped right on the incorrect component. Stay safe Brother
This vehicle needs an electrician, not a mechanic.
Had a similar issue on a 2005 Tahoe after another tech installed a new switch. He didn't rotate the new switch enough to match the old one. I pulled the switch out and rotated it two more clicks and reinstalled it and it worked fine after that.
If you cycle the shifter from park to drive quickly & sometimes hit the shifter with your palm while in park it’ll let the key release, that’s how I usually condemn a shifter
My first thought is they were tricking the computer to run on lower octane gas with that plugin.
What about the feed from the fuse box to the gearbox switch is there any issues with the feed. It might have a break in the wire .
Just drill a hole in the bottom cover and show them how to push something small in to push the solenoid free…..and maybe someone will eventually figure it out and steal it from them! Problem eliminated…..
One of my cars developed a problem,, it would not idle. Let off the gas, and it just shut down. LSS- after some troubleshooting, I discovered that the wire inside the engine harness, that controlled the idle air solenoid had a break. Inside the insulation.
You take thoses modular fuse boxes out you should spray all the male and female connections with tunnel cleaner, like they used to use on tvs that you manually changed channels with, it will clean and lub all of them up to help stop corrosion
Even changing one out you still need to do that. As for sevral problems that tells me it could be the main buss that pulls from the battery .
Also a good way to clean contacts is the eraser on a number 2 pencil youd be surprised how much shit you can get off metal with them.
We all could use a Hummer
My mom's Hummer h3 sunroof leaks or might be the drains for it is leaking too where's this place located at the point out how much it cost to redo it
The H2 are garbage going by my aunt. She put them together in a dissembling line all so she couldn’t purchase one either because she knew all the problems that they had. She said Better off getting a military Hummer.
Thank god I’m not the only one that thinks wide ass fender flares on a skinny wheel base looks stupid as hell
GM is notorious for electrical issues🙄
Test airbag collection sensor crash it into a brick wall. If the airbags don't deploy replace frt clip and broken sensors
Shifter linkage, probly has a hot wheel shoved under the shifter.
Stalling cheap Chinese made injectors sold by pep boys or some auto parts store, not a GM factory part. Like thats any better.
If I can pull a humvee not hummer into a 6×7 garage door that H2 will fit no problem. Yes a real mitilary Humvee owned by the US mitilary, dam thing drove like a tank no creature conforts.
Tottaly unlike hummer or H2 by the way all 3 fit into a 6×7 foot garage door.
I wasn't aware there is a PCB in that module.
I thought it was simply a plastic molded box with fuse
and relay blade terminal "extenders"🤷🏽♂
KTM bikes owns this Hummer?
Those fuse blocks are a nightmare on GM and Chrysler products, you'd think Ford would do the same but they got cool stuff like frame mounted fuel pump modules that will just corrode a hole in the entire thing. Gotta love electrical shorts.
Maybe spray some key lube in the ignition key slot !?
Keep up the great work man you are amazing and I look forward to watching part 2
these solenoids are freaking stupid. if a battery is dead, it locks the key in the acc position keeping power running and draining the battery even more. i deal with crap on a daily basis at work. i have to hook a jump pack up to get the key out before i can even run my battery and charging system tests…
calling bad key transponder made worse by the ODB plug in battery drain
so, fuse box with intermittent cuts will also reset that circuit…should put lithium or dielectric on pins and plugs so it don't corrode again
138,000 miles? So that's about 10,615 gallons of gas!
the connector on the ODB port is for the stereo. allows the aftermarket head unit to read and display vehicle info through the use of an idatalink unit (maestro rr/etc)
As these old vehicles age it will cost a fortune to keep um running.
Nice Suburban you worked on here. Those factory body kits are very well done…
Makes me want a Hummer H2
Had a similar issue with the wife's old Subaru Forester. Gear selector switch intermittently stopped working as a result of a sugary beverage being spilled…..
Resistive connections are a headache and the high impedance / low load of a DVM can actually make the job more difficult. You may see little or no drop from a circuit with corroded connections until the circuit is subjected to a load. I often laugh when I see somebody pronounce their battery is “good” because it has 13.X volts under No load.. LOL. As a matter of fact a simple light probe may do better then a DVM.
The heat in the engine compartment could affect the fuse connections and cause the other intermittent issues. I am always jealous when i see you use the power ratchets, after remembering all the sore wrists i had using regular ratchets! I really enjoy your videos.
Cool
Some times that's all it takes.
Hey whacha call a hummer h2 that was flooded
A hummer H20
he he he…
Thats a diagnostic… Wish more mech were like you
Here's how you fix those you pull the pin on it you throw it inside there and you get back problem fixed
no way I think it's a little thing you took out of the module connector under the dash is the problem it's all part of that plug it back in and check
What was the plug that you pulled from the OBD II plug used for. Thanks, great video as always.
What about that wire you pulled of the diagnostic plug
Your wiring diagram says the supply of that circuit is "PCB Relay Energized" check the relay they tend to stick.
It’s a Chrysler vehicle. That’s the problem.
Diagnosed, it uses more gas then anything on the road today. Must be owned by a gas station owner.
Bad sound activated hum switch.
WOW! Ray, you managed to take diagnosis to a new level!…Excellent video and well done!
I had a chevy hhr that would not release the key when the battery was low.
I'm going through the exact same thing right now…I've literally have had to unplug my battery because my suv won't turn off completely and won't release the key (2004 gmc envoy)
Throughout my life I have had to deal intermittent electrical faults numerous times and on numerous different vehicles and I find them to be just about the most temper inducing things ever invented. Ray I have to say that I greatly admire your diagnostic skills and patience. I love your videos and I have learnt so much from you. Many thanks from Australia 🇦🇺
What do you think about GM's H2 engineering?
This was a good one
Better watch the gas guage too
That faux woodgrain looks less realistic than the faux woodgrain in my '99 Cherokee. It should be a surprise, considering the massive difference in MSRP, but this Hummer is a Chevy, so it makes perfect sense.
And, c'mon, GM, you've done better woodgrain in the past!
Ray – the best one handed mechanic in America!
Ray, your troubleshooting of electrical issues is nothing less than outstanding. After 42 years of electrical engineering and a whole lot of troubleshooting and not one for "rattle can maintenance"…I would however recommend that you add a can of "Caig Laboratories DeoxIT D5" to your arsenal as it is an outstanding treatment for Connectors, Switches & Contacts that really does work.
Ray, how come you never contact cleaner on the pins and connector contacts? Just curious.
Odd that the device that was plugged in the obd2 port was removed that the key comes out easier. Who knows what someone else was doing.
JUST GET A HEAD MOUNT OR CHEST MOUNT LOL WHY MAKE IT SO DIFFICULT ON YOURSELF TO USE JUST ONE HAND
I had noticed that the key locking only seems to happen when the vehicle is cold (hasn't been running).
You didn't consider the temperature while trouble shooting. The defect only seemed to happen when cold. I tried hollering at the computer screen, but it didn't help. I'm a retired electronics tech, and for the most part, your electronic troubleshooting technique is very good.
Yellow and Blue probe leads……..<neck vein starts throbbing again>
Blue and Yellow test leads in honor of Aug 24 Ukrainian Independence Day?
WD40
There were never screws in the bottom of the bezel from the factory.
Why did you not spray some electrical cleaner on that fuse box (give it back to customer to test over a period of time to see if the fault re-occurs?)
Reeeeeee you didn’t check blinker fluid before using turn signal, again 😎
👍
pickup truck. for picking up trucks. that must be right
i always wanted get a hummer. I'm curious anyway to bypass ignition lock i had a 2002 chevy s10 blazer i was always able pull key out ignition even when running which i did like.
sometimes you have to get the hammer out. You may have restored the connection when you put the top of the fuse block back. Bring it back when it acts up
The key sticking must be a GM trait. Our 2007 Equinox does the same thing, but It's intermittent, and it makes us crazy!
ray had 2002 trailblazer key would not come out a plunger in the steering colum hooked to colision sensor through trans is problem can manual wire open key will then work
I love your videos I learn so much it was nice to see you in this video thank you so much for your service you are great man your friend tom Krakowski
Those things are money pits.
Good god, all that fake wood! Is that a 1986 Cadillac Eldorado or a Bummer H2?!
Intermittents…the bane of any technician
A mixture of a Cadillac and Chevy interior
I owned a 2003 H2 and loved it for the first 5 years or so. Held on to it for 12 years and finally sold it. I live in Boston so the underside was solid rust with all the road salt. And I mean total rust all over. Lots of $$ to keep replacing fuel and brake lines. Was just as happy when I sold it for parts.
The most common fault is gonna be that shifter switch in that console and you never pulled it apart and looked at the connector or check the switch for function, people spill pop and coffee down there all the time
Why not spray DeoxIT® on the pins? It works great for "Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics".
Great vid as always! the aftermarket obd 2 plug looks like pin 6-14 can line for the aftermarket radio…
You know what's worse than fake wood trim? Obvious fake wood trim.
Just another gm P.O.S. lol
I have a 2015 Chevy Colorado and when I throw the truck in park and turn it off in a fluid motion, it tends to not release the key. I have to turn the truck back on, take it out of park, put it back and park easily, making sure that the shifter moves as far as possible, and turn the truck off a second later. It's annoying, but as long as I am not in a hurry I am usually okay. Haven't seen the whole video yet, but I would try to put the vehicle in park, but not as thoroughly as you would since you are diagnosing it. It may not provide power again unless you put the vehicle in park while the vehicle is on. In my truck when this issue arises, merely moving the shifter out of park and back does not fix the issue.
Only at the 8min mark watching this and thinking that all the issues could be from that thing plugged into the OBDII plug.
2008 and 2009 were the last 2 years of the H2. For those final two years, they dropped the LQ4/4L65 combo for the 6.2 L92 and 6L80 combo.
Wow that would drive me to drink
Thanks for your great video I fixed my car and cleared the code where a dealership world have costs a lot thanks again
I enjoyed this video👍
I always preferred throttle body injection, I don't like direct injection with a high pressure pump like in my Focus. I think of carbon buildup though I'm told that isn't a problem in the Ford 2.0. I don't believe that
You know what they say, Ray. Stay strapped, or get clapped.
Oh, I see the problem: it's a Hummer.
wish they had the hood latch on internationals the garage (CORPORATE) forgets to latch the latches 2x so far at highway speeds not so fun hood flying up
I bet Ivan is watching this video and chuckling.
Heard the h3 has a 5 cylinder like the Colorado
I have NEVER been bored with any of your great instructional videos.
We here in YT land are always just looking over your shoulder and observing like peeping Toms. Which reminds me, we never see you go for lunch or take a bathroom break.
Just curious. I'm sure YT would shut you down on the Bathroom show. HA!
Just kidding.
Anyway, I learn much even when you don't find what you're looking for as it is the process that is so valuable to track.
With all that under carriage frame corrosion, it was quite logical to find it elsewhere as you did and electrical components are always suspect when corrosion is about.
Great Show!!
Looking forward to the rest of the fixes.
I do wonder if the customers of the vehicles you work on see all that you go through in dealing with their vehicle's problems.
Maybe if they did, they might have a better idea of just how involved and just what an excellent and honest mechanic they have hired.
Does the car mechanic's union have such an awards program for people like you?
Like the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, do you get a "Golden Wrench" and a dinner?
Would like to see you walk the "Black Carpet" as you enter the event wearing your uniform.
Ok! Later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone overpaid for a gaudy Tahoe… They could have saved their money, purchased an ACTUAL Tahoe, dropped in a crate LQ4/LQ9, and had money left over for all the maintenance those things need over their lifetime. Or just got the Yukon Denali with the LQ4 from the factory. Or the Escalade with the LQ9 from the factory. And it would have been the exact same truck (minus the Hummer's gaudy looks).
And the '08 is right in the middle of the worst years for full-size GM trucks.
