For polyurethane anti-swaybar bushings and to avoid possible squeaking, I apply plumber's teflon tape over the bar then the bushing over it

Been working on vehicles since I could pick up a wrench so about 20 years. I never once heard a cotter pin get called a split pin. I could see why it would be called that but i and everyone i have ever met call them cotter pins

    No new bumpstop rubbers?

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bobeaseshop says:

I've been trying to not say anything about it – BUT the appeal to tradition is a fallacy of logic AND it does not matter what a parts store $1.98 box reads. How do you know all the other languages on the box don't read cotter pin? What ya got hold of on those ball joints is a split pin. It is not a cotter pin, nor is it a hairpin. A cotter pin is a solid (not split) tapered pin to tighten an assembly. Look up Austin-Healy 100/6 front end assembles to see a good example. I love your videos by the way and you are simply using the vernacular. It just went wrong somewhere and it stuck. It is not a hot water heater – it is a cold water heater. Just thing folks say and we all know the meaning… but you are using a split pin. 🙂 Love you videos and admire "most" of you knowledge and super hard work you do. You're right up there with Eric O. in my book. Bobby

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tony Gostling says:

A cotter is a pin or wedge passing through a hole to fix parts tightly together. In British usage cotter pin has the same meaning, but in the U.S. it means a split pin.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Graeme says:

A cotter pin is just any metal pin used to fasten two parts of a mechanism together. Then all the different types of cotter pin were given or known by a certain name. So for example, an "R" pin looks an R shape and people ask for R pins. The pin you refer to as a cotter pin, the name usually given to it is a split pin, because it splits. The only pin I know that was just called a cotter pin was on older push bikes. If you search "PEUGEOT UO8 TYPE/SIZE Cotter pins 2X NOS! Beta01 D10-002-02 20/3/21". you will find a wedge shaped pin with a nut on the end to hold the crank arm in place on a bike, this was always called a cotter pin.

So technically, if you asked for a cotter pin, you will probably be asked, "Yes, which type?". Then you ask for the type that splits. This is all UK speak by the way.

I have heard that Moog parts are no longer of the same quality as in the past. Is that true? (Anyone?) OH, and Cotter Pins is the American name for them. In the UK and Europe they are known as Split Pins. Lived in Europe for 3 years and that is what they were called.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thoridin58 says:

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars WRG says:

I don’t know if this has been asked, but I have to ask. Why does the brake pad instructions say to open the bleeder valve when compressing the caliber back? If you do not you can damage the ABS booster system by forcing the brake fluid back or is this something that is on much newer cars?

Watching you spread those shoes reminded me of the time I decided to put shoes on our Dodge Dually. Everything went fantastic, I pushed the two round things back into the calipers to make room for the new shoes. Got it all back together and took it for a test ride. I hit the brakes a little harder than normal and both front brakes locked up. Had to call a wrecker to take truck back to our mechanic to find out what I had done. Turns out that sand gets behind those round things and you are supposed to pull them out and clean behind them or you will end up on the side of the road like me.
