In this video I show you the process I use to replace the transmission valve body in Subaru with the TR580 CVT trans. This one goes on top of the transmission and not in the pan. It would be nice if Subaru made just the lock up solenoids available instead of buying an $800 valve body. -Enjoy!

Thank you for providing this video, I would not attempt without the diagnosis tool that provided you with the transmission learning function.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pete Nowikow says:

Keep it coming Eric O. Love the content

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob M says:

I don't need to see you take every part off and engine to get to a problem. Just let me know if their was a unusual situation, otherwise KISS

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars steve herring says:

i personally don't think anything you do doc sucks. it's all good info. even though all my vehicles are all hot rods. my newest is a 99 f-150 my oldest is a 1940 with a 4.6 thirty two valve out of a cobra mustang. i'm trying to learn how you figure out what's wrong with these computer cars. i think the best one was the mustang that just stopped running out on the road.
thanks so much for all you've taught me. personally i don't think i could do any thing you do even if you were stand right next to me. i think you might fill that bad word jar up pretty quick.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dave buchanan says:

who else dropped their O ring into the hole in the trans and had to fish it out with a long screw driver?!?!?!?!

Looking at doing this repair. I'm concerned about the re-learn. What software/scanner are you using?

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Emilio G. says:

You won’t replace one solenoid but will reuse o rings? An o ring can bring this job right back. ?? Not a small job. I’d replace everything. Even the bolts. (For my personal vehicle). Threebond sealant for sure. Threebond has a specific cvt fluid sealant.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Greg Hill says:

i like this i might wind up doing this to my stupid Subaru cvt with that transmission hopefully the car will be gone before then. they already sent me a notice that my model has some transmission problems, so they extended warranty to 100,000 miles too bad im at 130,000
Got any videos on changing some transmission fluid in this supposed lifetime fluid transmission? everyone has the newer 690 transmission

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars empirecycleman says:

    Nice explanation. Liked the video.

Since all your regular fans commented a year ago, I'll throw my 2 cents in now. My 2013 Subaru just threw a P0700 and a P2763 and I'm going to face, at 100,000 miles, the choice of having a mechanic replace just the factory solenoid (from Subaru $45.82) or the whole valve thing. Plus the transmission control system, if that doesn't do it. I think my car was manufactured in that cut over to the top approach, like the car you just worked on. So cheers to you. I learned an enormous amount. Must say a lot neater than approaching the transmission from underneath. Hope my mechanic takes some $$ off for that.

    Great video, keep them coming!

If you could answer these two questions, I'd appreciate it greatly.

    1.) 2015 Subaru Forester premium. 155,000 miles
Lag time from park to drive or to reverse, 2 to 3 seconds before it'll engage, drive to reverse same lag or reverse to drive. When shifting to park it'll engage immediately. When stopped on hill, it'll hold fine when shifting foot from brake to the go pedal. This occurs when cold or warmed up. Driving seems fine with shifts.

Is this something to be worried about? What are your recommendations?

2.) Fluid flush or drain and fill? Along with changing pick up screen ?

Thanks, I appreciate and I hope you'll keep these vids going.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chad Welty says:

What's the problem if you just didn't fix an issue like this? I'm guessing just extra wear and tear on the transmission causing that to fail faster?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick McConnell says:

Great video! Very informative and funny at times. How did I know you were in Pa.,cause I am too.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars trangia94534 says:

Living in Australia and leaving the mechanic trade before everything got digital I marvel at the rust stuff and learn a lot from the new digital tracing!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Av8tore71 says:

I cannot stand CVT transmissions. I had one in my 2013 Dodge Avenger SE V6 brand new back then I thought it was nice but got rid of it before it started giving me issues

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff D says:

I know this was a replacement transmission with unknown history, but would fluid flushes (replacement) reduce the probability of solenoid failure?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Sims says:

I like as many video's as possible.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Devlyn Tobin says:

We have subarus and i do my own repair work as well. What would be a good scan tool to have that reads the ABS, tranny and engine codes? Want to get a good all around diagnostic computer than is bidirectional and can do and read just about anything.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dan Chambers says:

liked the comment towards the end of the video:::honest moral ethics on parts when repairing a problem

Do you happen to know which of the 2 orange wires on the gray connector is the 1 for the awd solenoid? I have a p0971 for the awd solenoid and 1 ohms out at 5.3 and other orange is 113 ohms. I have 13 subaru outback with the same TR580 trans.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Akbar Ostadi says:

Will you post a link to the Altel scan tool you are using in this video. Thank you.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Osama Hayba says:

Hi there, should I also change even the codes are not always persist, so the same codes you have appears sometimes in the morning, and when they appear in dashboard, I simply turn off the car, then turn it on and the codes simply gone

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kyle Hubick says:

I personally think that is a good idea. Thanks Frank in Tennessee

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Douglas Langeberg says:

I don't mind it someone else does the work. I would really like if there is something we need to watch for when taking out bolts like the underneath valve body has one or two longer screws, that you would take the time to say hey during this step you need to look for these two bolts.

  37. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars francisco juarez says:

I have a question, you have to program it?

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thad Machia says:

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pennsylvania Citizen says:

I'm a Subaru owner (two Foresters) and appreciate you doing vids like this one. I've heard about the later Suby models with valve bodies being on top of the trans and have wanted to see what was involved. My main Forester now has 71,000 miles and have been told that the valve body will probably go bad at about 125,000. Thanks for this informative video.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dustcommander100 says:

This video is so insanely helpful. Where can I rent the repair instructions and wiring diagram, I also have an Autel.

I want to say that with this video I was successfully able to replace my valve body and am now driving happily along.

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars thermobollocks says:

I was hoping for an actual diaper.

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PitViper says:

Why does the valve body requires a calibration after the install? Solenoids are just on or off. There is no range to calibrate to. I am asking this as I am waiting for the delivery of my valve body and don't have the pro scan tool you have.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kevin thielman says:

Great videos watch them more than netflix

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PitViper says:

My Subaru dealership quoted me $1295 for the valve body in Virginia. Prices are going up.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marcelo Delcarmen says:

what scanner are you using to do the procedure?
