i almost bought a subaru because i liked the idea of the opposed 4 boxer type engine….but watching these service videos made me pretty glad i didn't

Dear Eric of 2016. My name is DaddyBean, and I'm from the future. I'm prepping to replace my first timing belt, on an '06 Subaru 2.5L SOHC, watching all the videos I can find. Yours was great and had some good tips I hadn't seen yet. I'll have to find your other video next for tios on the SOHC. Thanks from 2021! (PS, in 2019 and into 2020, slowly stock up on TP, paper towels, and general groceries, and when Disney stock hits $84, buy buy buy.)

I want to first say that I love your work style and your tutoraials are the first and only that I care for. I do most of my learning by the haynes, by myself, and several tries over. But I do love it and I love my little 99 legacy Outback limited…I have a real problem this time though and can't seem to get an answer, hopping you could help…I recently changed my water pump and ran into a huge problem…I know I can fix it I just need to ask an expert before making moves…when I was taking it off the back frame or housing that the pump gets atached to had a litttle peuce of the bottom right corner that broke off (to inclue the pasing hrough one of the bolts hole corners…Is there a way to fix that with some epxoy or does that
detach from the block so that I can have it elded pecie

My engine has a loud rapping noise coming from around the water pump area, I had the belt off and the sound was still there. I'm assuming something in the timing belt area. Watching your video it seems like the tensioner failed and the pulley arm is rapping on the water pump area.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A N says:

How did you torque down the crank pulley?

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Trolling 4 Dollars says:

After watching this video, I am glad that I own a 96 Miata. That Subi looks a bit tougher to work on. I do like your videos, equal amounts of knowledge and humor. Keep up the great work.

This post got me out of trouble very nicely. Had to wade through some decidedly average content to find this little gem. Wished I'd found it before I started but it got me home safe and sound!!

i always update the water pumps, the newer ones are better and bleed correctly

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Young says:

Hi with respect fitting a second hand timing belt is bad shop practice, If that belt fails for whatever reason it'll cost you a engine

Hey Eric, been a long time watcher. Great vids as always. I doing a suby for the first time. You skipped the torquing of the crank bolt. i don't have a special suby pulley holding tool and Im wondering whether you use a special tool or you have some other way of holding the engine still on an auto to torque the bolt? appreciate your advice,

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George says:

How much does this service for this engine typically go for? Or atleast how many hours of labor should it be?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars R. B.L. says:

Love that "if you want to full gorilla…"
I am working on my 2006 Subie and this video was super helpful Eric,
I have to say it, even if i didn't have a Subie with similar issues, i would rather watch one of SMA videos for half an hour than watch any dumb BS Sit Com or "reality TV" show, SMA is the Ultimate in Reality TV viewing!
Keep it up Eric, your the best.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lino Veiga says:

How do you do plugs on that engine?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars arnie W says:

You said the timing belt was done a year ago. Wasnโ€™t the water pump done at the same time? The entire kit isnโ€™t that much more money and customer doesnโ€™t have r&r labor a second time when all was open for replacement.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars george gonzalez says:

One little thing… Sometimes the idler pulley has a large center hole that is fitted with a large cupped washer. I don't know if it is intentional, but it sure is handy to loosen that bolt a bit so the pulley can go off center and give you another half inch of slop in the belt so you can finesse the timings.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Oakhill says:

Erik Johnson is correct. This video showed everything clearly. You gave a simple easy-to-follow description of what needs to be aligned.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Erik Johnson says:

Eric, every time I see you apologizing at the end of one of your videos I wish I could teleport myself into SMA so that you could see in person how much people love and appreciate your channel. I think it's safe to say that the majority of your viewers feel as I do. You're the man, and your videos are just great. Keep on keepin on, brother!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Troxell says:

Is that the same belt you took off? I thought anytime you remove a timing belt you must replace it, as belts stretch under use.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bblando65 says:

The dumbest motors ever….there is NO advantage to a boxer engine in a regular commuter car…in fact, after seeing what a joke it is just to replace the friggin water pump and timing belt, I laugh at all the stupid schmucks here in the Pacific Northwest who buy these awful cars…ya got to disassemble the whole front end of the car just to change the timing belt and water pump…and no way should it be "normal" for any car to need to have head gaskets replaced before 100k miles like most Subies…My 91 GTI, which Ive owned since new, still has the original head gasket with 268k miles on it…But, it is funny to see all the "outdoorsy, hipster, and soccer mom " types here in Oregon who don't know schit about cars buy these hot messes…

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Ferguson says:

The BIG MISTAKE was not replacing the water pump and thermostat when the timing belt was replaced the first time. Subaru pumps WILL NOT last through two timing belts. They should always be replaced with the belt to avoid the cost of disassembling the front of the engine TWICE.

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Clint Baena says:

I bought a 97 Subaru from a guy last year not running. I took a chance and paid 1000 dollars for it. He told me it was his daily work car and one morning it would not start. He said he had a mechanic looked at it in his driveway and said his computer went bad and that is all that is wrong with it. I got it towed to my house and started working with it, anyhow I took the timing belt apart, it has a brand new belt ,new water pump, bolts were cleaned then I found out that they did put a new timing belt and water pump but when they put it back together the idiots forgot to place the little keyway when they install the crankshaft pulley. lol so when you start the car it would not crank because of it. Needless to say at the end I got the car running and drove it for two years and sold it and made more than what I payed for. What a great deal !!!!
That was a true story. But not all the time you ran into that situation 90 percent of the time you ended up buying a melon. So my suggestion is don't buy a car especially when the car does not run.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Eckert says:

Too bad you're not around here! I would send my whole fleet of trucks and cars to you. Rare to find a competent and honest mechanic these days! Keep up the great work Eric!

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BillinSD says:

I had the SOHC engine (2.2) and honestly working on a Subaru in the home garage is way easier than my Toyotas or Ford. Especially since the alternator is on top. Spark plugs are not terrible even though you think they would be on the boxer engine. Will be looking at your head gasket videos as well ๐Ÿ™‚
Excellent video and walk through on the DOHC version, a lot of owners have trouble with lining everything up.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NW Cup says:

Awesome video, thank you so much for the help. Question. You mentioned the symptoms of a car that has the timing screwed up when set up "correctly". I know someone that wants to sell their Subaru and it has the symptom you mentioned (runs fine until it warms up). Recent timing done as well (and redone apparently). How likely would you say that is the culprit, and what kind of damage can occur from running it that way? Thanks again for giving me the confidence to break open my Outback.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim P says:

The great thing about owning a Japanese car is the parts. So many Japanese companies making good quaility part in Japan or the USA. Lot's of them are OEM.
We wouldn't dream of buying a car with a Chinese engine but we can end up with an engine full of Chinese parts. Not for me thanks. Pay the bit extra and drive without worry.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mr. Fixit says:

I would suggest replacing the cam seals at this time. I had a cam seal pop out of it's bore and cause a massive oil leak. 8 quarts of oil in 50 mile drive. yes it was a bad deal.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars spelunkerd says:

That's an excellent timing belt video, thank you!

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Flanagan says:

I have 2 long 10mm bolts that I cut the heads off of to use as alignment pins for the water pump & gasket. Great channel man, thank you!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Rich says:

I'm working on my 96 Subaru Legacy GT with same engine and my drivers side intake cam pulley spun with the impact gun so hoping I have it right. Putting a new belt on mine and it has 107 k miles. Have to replace my camshaft seals as they leak. Water pump bearing was bad too. My friend said to take out the spark plugs and did that because I was hoping the pulley would not spin out fast etc with less compression. I inserted all the plug caps back in . Was really inquisitive on being experimental on a easier safer more reliable way to tackle this and if anyone tried it this way without having the spark plugs in just let me know.

Also wanted to know any way to tell camshaft positioning like the other side of engine looking at the plugs that go on the other side of this engine. I did mark with white valve ink marker the old belt before taking it off. I know Eric says that the piston is set in the middle or to that effect when its timed. Guess I best try and start it but was concerned that I may have botched it up. First time tackling this type of repair. My friend is helping me also.

We filled up with antifreeze the top passengers coolant hose and it fills in the coolant super fast. I did this before and my car ran fine. Much much faster way in replenishing the coolant but again no expert by any stretch of the imagination.

Any insight on my predicament regarding the intake wheel pulley on the drivers side needing readjustment? I'm going to count 28 teeth over on the belt too. Wish I seen this video before tackling this project.

    Great freaking videos Eric!!

Is it normal to install the waterpump gasket dry, without a sealer?

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joseph Pecorelli says:

What is your take on the quality of original Subaru water pumps? I recently had my timing belt and components replaced on my 2010 Legacy 2.5I, and the mechanic said unless they start weeping, he won't pull them until the second TB replacement. He said they're really reliable.

Just curious as to what your thoughts are. Thanks!
