In this video I help out a guy who just got tires put on at another shop. Shortly after that he was driving down the highway and the front wheel fell off! The damage wasn't to bad and it could have been a whole lot worse. -Enjoy!

No torque wrench for the lug nuts?
Hi Eric i know the video I'm watching is three years old but i was wondering where you got the Tool " A bit stronger than me" at 15.46 The Big Red Bar Thingy majig was it a Walmart or a local car parts store i would be grateful if you could help as it would help me to do the similar jobs you had to do as a bar on its own can be a bit tricky Your channel is great step by step things to avoid very helpful i have loads of video's to catch up on as i only found yours as Youtube forwarded it to my list of channels of interest today as i also watch "Rainman Ray's Repairs" I hope you have a great day stay safe & keep your video's coming I will catch up as i find them addictive Cheers Gerry.

Stoopidoos don't like their lugs overtightened at all.
Had three studs pop off on me in out the n Vermont once. After 6 at night luckily this tiny Habib store with a garage attached happen to have nice people and 2 lug studs for a supadoo.

My girlfriend has an Outback almost like the one in the video and her's has the tire pressure monitors. Her's is a 2007 so I'm guessing this one in the video is a 2005 or 2006.
i have done 100s of ball joints in my life and I never saaw the red tool you used to push down the lower control arm…who makes that tool…..i usually used the 4 foot cut up drag links and modified from 80s and 90s Chevys …..i would cut off extra on end and flatten out threaded end…snap-on would sell that tool for $249 off the truck…LOL….great job

I worked at a tire store for a couple years after my retirement, I just could not convince the younger guys to take the time to clean off that old adhesive, both for appearance and to make it easier in the future. They claimed it took too much time, as they picked up a broom to kill time in between jobs.
Hey that rolling up Emery/metalite cloth on a steel rod with slit in it is what I call a Woosley hone. Named for the guy that showed it to me It works really well I've used it many times

Seemed like a very harsh test ride, as if the tyres were very over-inflated. Could be a safety issue, if your eye-balls are rattling around in their sockets…!
These struck close to home! My otherwise really good repair garage 's unskilled tire guy failed to tighten the lug nuts on one front wheel when they put the winter wheels on, the tire pressue light had gone on, I stopped and checked the tire pressures, but they were OK. A wobble began, like a flat tire, and then got worse and I stopped before it rolled off – found four of the bolts on the road, one was still in the wheel but held on by a thread. Wrecked the aluminum wheel, and a dust cover, but that was all. A friend pointed out that the tire pressue light was sensitive not to senders in the wheels on an Audi, but to the ABS system sensing something was wrong. In the fine print, in the owner's manual it notes this. A few years ago a rented Subaru lost a rear wheel due to a dry wheel bearing which cut through the axel, I was on an interestate, but felt the wobble, had slowed down in the breakdown lane, and the wheel rolled past me on the right while the car settled down on the brake drum.

Owned an '05 outback for 13 years and have done all of these repairs and more, driveway style…. usually with a lot more swearing and more primitive tools. Those ball joints are real pissers if they, the cross bolt or castle nut are rusted or corroded. Had to replace the knuckle after the cross bolt sheared and all attempts to get remains out failed. Know the new owner and she's still rollin!
What a rip off. New wheel, new nuts, new tire, new valve, and new ball joint when it's got "unsafe" wheel bearings. He should have held the car for ransom and called the inspection cops. : )
Don't knock any of that rust off that Subaru or it might fall to the ground. Good grief! Does every car over 5 years look as rusty as that one? Mine is 11 years old and I'm in a salt area too. But doesn't look that bad.

I like to do my own work but my back was hurting so I had a mobile mechanic come put a Pitman arm on my pickup for me and when I took it to lunch it vibrated like crazy and I called him and he said it shouldn't have anything to do with what he did and then he called me back a minute later he said wherever you're at, don't go anywhere I think I figured out the problem and I asked him what it was, he said I forgot to tighten up the lug nuts. He came out and tightened the lug nuts and everything was fine and I figure everybody makes mistakes.

I had a cousin lose a front wheel on the highway. He woke up in the hospital paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life.

As long as the difference is 3/32 or less I don't worry.
If he just had tires point on a week ago, it's likely the lug nuts weren't put on right.
Glad i live in the deep south I would have serious PTSD if my car had all that rust under it. They need to figure out another way for controlling ice on the roads other than salt

Always retorque bolts a couple miles after a wheel change
It may be a pain in the a'x, but I always retorted my lug nuts after a wheel removal. Most tire shops are not professional enough to torque the lug nuts and just drive them on with a impact driver.
If your looking for a trusted mechanic in your area, put a blown fuse in the spot for your wiper motor and take it in to the mechanic you wanna test. If they say you need an all new motor and stuff, decline the work and go to the next one. Your looking for the shop that says it was just a fuse and they fixed it already and aren't charging you for it.
