Hey Ray, do you have a forum or discord for repair questions?
I understand how a wheel alignent works in a basic level (I am not a mechanic just an itnerted obsvuver). Do yu need to consider the tyre condition an/or the tyre pressers fo the alimment to be corrected prperly?….Keep up the good work with these videos, they both entertaing and educational, and some I look forward to watching. i.e. I like your sense of humour
Get the shop owner to invest in a steering wheel leveler tool instead of eyeballing.
Do you grease the new tie rods or are they pre-greased?

You need to do an old school alignment with chalk/paint crayon and rod. Then check it with the modern rack
is that the factory color,,or did the guy spray it..it has orange trees growing on it..thats worse than rattle can..
Neighbor stopped in for a minute near the end of the video stream. He heard the audio about the noisy tires being moved to the rear. This is what he said: "If it's got an LSD, just powerbrake it to get a double line, then adjust air pressures for maximum width and spin them up to 80 MPH for about 15 seconds. That ought to even them both out." Hillbillies, lol. . . .

I love these videos, really. But my dad was an industrial mechanic – weaving equipment – for 40+ years. God rest his soul, he'd have given me a hard time for using any kind of pliers to turn a nut or bolt. I guess he trained me well because I still cringe when Ray does it. I know those piers are a cut above the general purpose jobs that will bugger up a hex. "We are slaves to the learning of our apprenticeship."

Not a mechanic so here's the dumb question. Why or what causes that one camber angle to be out and how can it be rectified? I may have missed it. Appreciate any input. Thanks.
Some of the new Hunter Alignment Racks have a portable display pad so you don't have to take an eye test trying to read the numbers or having to let go of the wrenches to peak at the readings.
When I replace a rack (steering gear), I take the clamps off the small ends of the boots (bellows), slide the boots back, apply some silicon-based lube to the shaft (gigidy), and reinstall the boots/clamps. Makes the toe adjustments a breeze for the life of the vehicle.

My Brother is a Professional Mechanic and one day the Mobile toy store rolled by … antway his tech came out with something like your wrench multiplier as an actual tool made for this purpose, it looked like a pry-bar with opposing heavy hooks on the end that cradle the wrench to give extra length and torque.
I use jack stands and string…. cuz I have too. Lol. I find myself using "nice and shiny" way to much. Please make a shirt with nice and shiny. Nice and shiny on the back with generic parts cleaner can and on the front R&R repairs pocket decal
You save yourself alot of hassle eyeing the toe before you take it off off the lift. Lock the steering wheel and adjust. You can get it good enough before you hit the rack. Replaced a toe bar on a jeep today, eyeballed it and had a 7 tenth split on total toe. Still had to move the right wheel to center and adjust the left toe with the sleeve & adjust steer ahead. Jeeps arent true total toe like 1/2 ton+ trucks. The passenger tie rod doesnt adjust.
Do you have an option to align with wintoe? I do that every time and it goes like butta usually

Had one of these older expeditions be so rusted that the tie rods had to be replaced to adjust them. And I live in Colorado, where there is almost no rust.

Hi Ray we have a spring loaded spirit level designed to clip on the steering wheel. It’s more accurate than eying it up. Love the videos keep them coming 👍
a tip i was taught on changing tie rod ends… count number of turns it takes to get old ones off, then gives you a ball park figure for installing the new one

I can see the wheel grabbing. If that rack isn’t dead nuts centered, the toe won’t matter. Those arms are angled and any off center gives you that wooshy feel.
New rack means new filter if applicable.
Your shop alignment rack blowes my mind. ok the last time i did a wheel alignment was back in the stone age (40 yrs ago) and we had nothing like it then.
I find if you close the shop doors behind the cameras they can see the reflectors better.
There really should be a only classic rock songs rule in shops. They may not always be the best but some of the drum and bass or hip hop stuff is painful. at least classic rock is consistent I'm a younger dude too so this isn't some older man rant

Ray, you're still using the wheel chocks the wrong way around. The fast rising side should be against the wheel. The sloped curve side should contact nothing but air. The side with all the ridges goes on the ground.
Used that way, those same chocks can hold multi-ton aircraft in place. If you have them in the way you use them, any change in weight means that the tyres dig into the chock and it's never coming out…

I'm surprised you didn't take a moment to figure out why the rear camber was out, call customer, & fix that issue before releasing the vehicle. Now they are going to need another alignment after replacement of bad parts.

Dam Ray !! A day in my life , Pull the rear set shims , grind off the pins an set the rear camber , At a extra labor cost , or , set the toe an let it go !!
So I have PRO TIP for you @RainmanRay when the camera gives you a hard time with a rear satellite head not being seen stand directly behind the head to give a large brightness contrast between the head face and the bright sunlight outside 😉….I am also an auto tech and have a few videos posted up check them out….I've done a few alignment videos 1 being VW engine cradle shifting for camber correction

Actually …..I don't think those are LASER's, just bright LED's that reflect off the reflectors on the wheel units. If they were LASER's there would be no reason to have more than one emitter at the camera and it would look different than it does.

Great video Ray, I usually remeasure caster and reset the steering wheel after rear adjustments. I’m not sure if it makes a difference.

HI RAY ,like Louis said the alignment videos are interesting ,the next time you do one could you explain a bit more about the caster or camber not coming in to line ,because it's a bent or worn out part? That would be great to learn how that affects alignment.thanks good vid as always.
TIP: if you need to use heat to loosen a nut then ensure that the component has fully cooled down before making an adjustment. This happened to me – as I drove down the road the steering wheel went more and more off-centre. The garage said that they had to heat up the locking bolts on the rack to loosen them. As they cooled, the rack arms contracted pulling the wheels out of alignment.

When I first started doing alignments in the late 80's we had strings that ran from the front heads to the rear heads on a Hunter Alignment machine
Been about 10 years I've been out of the trade but these new tracking set ups just look far too over complicated.
My question is did the parts go bad early for the model and year or did they abuse their vehicular ?

These ford expos and f150s are terrible for breaking strut springs I just did one yesterday truck only had 85k and grandpa drives it to the coffee shop every morning it never sees off-road pretty shitty really
There should be a kit to convert the engine from a 3 valve to a 2 valve. Sure it will reduce power but there's a supercharger kit. If I'm estimating based on the older 2 valve configuration the power difference with a supercharger is 100hp. I'm guessing that the added 3rd valve throws off the timing to the point that after 350k miles the engine would have to be disassembled down to the block itself. I believe that the engines are still good and all you have to do is replace the whole top half with a 2 valve system.
I'm willing to bet that no one has ever tried this.
