In this video I have a look at a 2007 Toyota Camry that was towed in with a "crank, no start." It was a quick diagnosis that led us right to the problem. I didn't get the job to repair it because the option I gave the customer was a little to expensive. Either way. -Enjoy!

I have the exact same issue with my 2006 corolla. Brake fluid in my air intake and my engine ran like a kitten. stop spraying and it dies. I did replace the fuel pump and it didn't change a thing. I changed it again with a different one and it didn't help at all. The fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter are all in the fuel tank with the fuel pump. So they are all new. I haven't checked fuel pressure yet. That is my next step and then injectors. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks again for an awesome channel.

My 99 Toyota Camry was down for 3 months which left my 73 yr. old husband & me w/o transportation unless my son walked a few blocks to the Dollar General (we live in a small town food desert or spent half a day on a bus to go across town to Krogers). Until last month or so Krogers was our only option. Anyway I finally found someone who could tell me it was the timing belt, not the engine. We got our nephew to replace it (did it wrong twice). After that it would start by pumping the gas then race but it was sorta like driving a manual. So I came to youtube and figured out on my own (thanks to these videos) it needed a new camshaft position sensor. Again my nephew put it in and it still won't do right. Sometimes it chugga-chuggas, sometimes a gas pump will do it other times a pump will almost flood it. Sometimes you have to pump it if going over 30 mph. The really strange thing though is if it feels like it's dying I ease my foot OFF the gas then ease it back on and it will make it up hill if not too steep, though straining. Then I remembered AutoZone tested it for free. Well the FixFinder said I needed to replace the camshaft position sensor (the part I just replaced). It says P0340 "Camshaft Position Sensor ""A"" Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)" Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor) Secondary DTCs P0171 : System Too Lean (Bank 1). We can't afford to take it into the shop and the man that helped us the first time to know it was the timing belt has way too much on his plate to ask his help again. So any ideas would help. Do I need another part, is there something else I can do? Any ideas, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. It's a 24 yr. old car that otherwise is wonderful and faithful. I don't need free work. I just can't afford to keep paying for parts & labor only to still have the same problem. God bless for any effort to help you can make.

What if brake cleaner don't start the car?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Vladimir Krimnus says:

I like the way you diagnosed a lot of common sense which is not so common anymore.
I have comry 2003 170k original fuel pump.
Do you think I should replace the fuel pump and where should
I buy it and what brand. I'm not a professional mechanic that so I'm thinking to buy Fuel Module so it would be easier to replace.
Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Vlad.

i wish mine was this easy! same issue in my 2012.. mine wont start. i can hear fuel pump and tried with starting fluid. i also have spark and getting no codes!!! First time ive never been able to figure a problem out!

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adrienne Sparks says:

Thank you so much! Wondered what I did wrong until I watched this! So easy and started right up!

I love to watch your videos. You sure do know your job. I'm a mechanic myself and would love to learn from you.

My 07 camry was doing same thing after I did and oil change. I also replaced air filter and tighten battery terminal, reset maintenance light. I thought it was fuel pump so I cranked over and over. Then it thought I'll sit inside lock it with key fob unlock it. Open the door and close the door and turn it on and it fired right up. It probably had some kind of anti theft I must have triggered after some maintenance work.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jim Bos says:

It tickles me how these guys will pay a guy to diagnose it, but then they have a buddy who is a master mechanic and can fix it cheaper.

I have in my garage a Camry 2006 4 cylinders and it was running after changing the timing chain then is not starting now. I checked the timing and it is good.

I followed ur video, did not work. Still no start

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LeoGnardo says:

So I'm having an extremely similar problem, however my 89 Camry starts just fine when the engine is cold & I can take a small drive, but then 15 minutes later it just cranks & won't start at all for an hour or two until the engine is totally cooled again. It originally just died out on me in the middle of a road & I was stuck at an intersection, no check engine lights, no warning, no anything. So I just got done replacing the spark plugs & wires, distributor cap & rotor, then the fuel filter & fuel pump; thinking that the fuel pump & fuel filter were the main issue. I thought I had fixed it actually after having to drop my tank to change the pump since it's in a different location than the sending unit. I drove it around a nice country block & then got home, waited 15 minutes, & boom, same issue, still stuck at square 1 really, just cranking & not turning over. My last effort is going to be to buy a new EFI Main Relay, because that'll be the last thing in the fuel system to really change, & it's a cheap car anyways so I'm not going to bother digging too much further if I don't even know what the issue is. Anybody got any advice? What else could give me these symptoms?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dude Kramer says:

Fuel bump hey???? Why don't you suspect it could be the fuel injection control circuitry?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craigie F Concert says:

So did he charge them for the diagnosis? Seems like a waste of time otherwise. They knew full well they were just going to do it themselves.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craigie F Concert says:

Tow truck? Nah, they’re just going to drive it with the hood off and the buddy hanging in the engine compartment spraying brake clean into the intake!

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jvst20051 says:

I did this to my car sprayed fluid it starts thn dies .put new fuel pump new distributor new sparkplugs and wire and nothing i even checked th e file pressure 40psi good and still just cranks

Mine cut off while I'm driving has full electrical power all lights work and radio excetera appears it's not getting fuel but I don't know when you crank it over it just clicks

My daughters demolition derby ride is exhibiting fuel pump symptoms, fired with a squirt of starter fluid. Checked the fuse, and swapped the relay w the ac relay still no go. My plan is to as you did pop the cover and plug and test for juice. Just for an added twist she reports mice have shredded everything in the glove box, praying the didn't munch on the fuel pump wire!!!!!! Job for tomorrow!

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rick Pontificates says:

I have a WHOPPER of a problem! I'm racking my brain over this. Want to take a crack at it? It's a 2002 Rav4 (2.0L auto).
Here's how it started: The wife took the car to the store on a rainy day. She says the car was going over puddles and getting splashed by other cars. The car made it to the store, but on the way back, it sputtered in the parking lot and seemed to almost coast. Then it regained power and nearly made it all the way home. While stopped at a traffic light, the car died for good.

Here's what I know: Live data on my scan tool shows 225 RPM while cranking. The coil packs have +12V and ground (in RUN position) but there is NO TRIGGER PULSE to any of the 4 coil packs.
The common leg of all the fuel injectors have +12V in RUN position and the other leg shows a diode drop to ground (meaning, the drive transistors are connected).
Coil packs are all new, plugs are new, fuel pump is new.
Fuel pressure is confirmed good at the fuel rail.
Crankshaft sensor is known good (swapped with a working 4Runner, which has the same sensor).
CAM sensor was replaced with new one.
No short on either the CAM or CRANK sensor wiring and one leg of both sensors is tied to ground.
The input side of the crank sensor was traced back to the ECM and verified.
The ECM was sent out for diagnosis and confirmed fully working (I don't know of they can confirm crank sensor input). I tried a new ECM anyway and still no start.
Basically, everything seems ok, BUT THE CAR CRANKS AND WON'T START!

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars copperkettle says:

That is awful. You should have been awarded the contract with such a nifty diagnosis. I love the nuts and bolts lunch pail approach. (You have Scotty beat by a mile.) Yeah, newer vehicles – but old school troubleshooting methods. I am new to your channel and a Toyota enthousiast. I've noticed that most of the Toyo problems are generally not too complex. Do you ever get Toyota issue that require sophisticated diagnostic/programming tools? Another words, the vehicle would need to be sent to a dealership?

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Miller says:

He will be doing this again. Go OEM on fuel pumps. Been there done that.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jason's AdLiberty says:

    Freaking nice vid!!!!
Covered all that in less than 15 minutes!
    Nice job bud!!

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheCubicnz says:

Am I the only one who finds this diagnosis not quite complete? I know that the FP is most likely the cause, but he didn’t confirm low fuel pressure as a symptom, so it could be a fault at the injector end like a bad power wire, or even a wiring fault in the pump set. I would have thought removing the pump and bench testing it would be appropriate to be 100% on the diagnosis.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roman C. says:

Great job, I love Scotty .

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe T says:

Great video. V Good diagnosis skills! Wonder what the mileage is on car? At what point does it need to be changed as to prevent a breakdown?

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Johnny Blaze says:

Have a 99 camera i ran a tree branch over and it was a hard hit car shut off rite away. I hear the fuel pump turning on itll turn over with staring fluid only till it burn off. Is there a emergency fuel cut off
