So uh, once upon a time I did an oil change uh on a Jaguar and we found out that said Jaguar had a stripped drain plug and I ordered a new drain pan from uh from a Jaguar dealership which was this or an oil pan and which was this unit not this exact one. Uh, three weeks later they canceled the order. a week after that I called them to see where it was because they didn't tell me that they canceled the order. Then they told me the part was no longer available in as I'm back order so I had to order another one.
So I think we're on five or six weeks later something like that and I've got a uh I got another oil pan that hopefully does not have stripped out threads on the on the plug there which I don't think it does. So um, let's uh, let's go see if this Jag is going to start because it's been sitting in my parking lot for days and weeks and weeks and days and probably even longer waiting on this thing to to finally show up. Keys Keys keys. Jaguar Key Gravity That's not good.

There we go 156 892 miles on the odometer. Uh, same amount of mileage as the last video because the car hasn't moved in like months. Anyway, backing out the auto me alarm are we alarming Warning me of an impending Collision All right, you know what. let's let's do this.

should be this will be I didn't say good I said will. This will be a very smooth repair. This is going to go swimming with you I've had enough. Uh, we've had enough difficulty the past couple weeks I Want to have a nice easy day? have a nice easy day? That's good. Oh on another note, I don't have to waste all that brand new oil we just put in this car. Reason being is I cleaned out uh one of these oil drain tubs right here. bottom is not clean but the top is clean. So what I can do is I can save all the oil that I drain out of this pan in this pan and then put it back into that engine so that will work that it's going to be sufficient.
That's going to save us like 70 bucks. It took six dollars in brake clean but we saved 70 dollars. Smart, you know. I actually have a problem with the term saving money.
Did you ever go to the grocery store and they they ring in all your stuff and then on the receipt it's like oh you saved 14 and blah blah blah sense right? Did you really save it? Or are they really saying hey, we didn't charge you fourteen dollars and blah blah blah sense because what I see is them saying we just didn't charge you this much? you didn't really save I mean did they debit the money into your into your IRA or the Mercedes account they backed up for you? You're not saving anything, they just charged you less. Don't be fooled by those marketing wanketeers. See, we're gonna need some light down there I can't see what I'm doing now and I get it, You know you. you come in with like a coupon or like a discount code or something like that.
Then yes, you save something. but to just put on your receipt playing his day? you saved x amount of dollars? That's nonsense. They're lying to you. You can save anything.
Okay wrench. I think it's a 14, but I'm taking the 15 just in case and we need some chair action. It's like shuffleboard. That's silly.
It's uh, not a 14. I swear. one time I'm gonna walk up and I'm gonna grab the right tool the first time. It's going to happen at least once.

Oh yeah, threads are still grindy, this is nasty, and we're gonna need this thing to capture our oil. still going I Don't really want a power tool this because, well, I just don't I don't like the power tool drain plugs. it's uh, bad habit Maybe that's how we get into situations like this and scuppy. There we go, Foreign 's almost done draining.
so I'm going to start pulling these pan bolts out a little quarter inch. driver does wonders in such a occasions, especially with a wobbly, you know I understand that? Uh, this pan was recently replaced due to a leak or something or a strip drain plug. I'm not sure, but it was already replaced once not too long ago. Okay, we're getting to the point where uh, this is gonna be ready to come down.
So I'm gonna go ahead and get our good oil out of here and get it out from under the vehicle. That way stuff can't fall in it. Yeah, that's that's really good oil. It's got zero miles on it in probably about 15 minutes of run time, and it's synthetic and we just don't want to waste it. We should be conserving resources not being wasteful with them. I Don't know if you guys noticed or not. We're starting to run a little low on resources real quick like okay I think this is about ready to uh to come off of here. so let me try to just get under it.
That's beautiful. So interesting enough. I'm seeing silicone sticking out of this thing. but I uh thought there was supposed to be a gasket.
I'm wondering why there is sealant on the surface that has its gasket. that doesn't make sense to me. What happens? Does the silicone help the gasket seal better? Is that what we're thinking? It's like twice as much gasket so you know it's good oil. I Almost got got oil out of my pants.
Almost. Okay, Well here's our gasket. Get that thing out of here right now. This new gasket coming in.
Now we can see there's like a little cutout right here on this upper oil pan. and our new gasket has a uh, a little little uh Doodly Doo sticking out right there and that's gonna slip into that Notch and reference the the position of this gasket and we're just gonna walk along and feed this thing into that little slot all the way around. and then we can go and uh and bolt this replacement pan back on. which is good.
Ah, get in there please. This is an odd design I Think because usually you're gonna slip these gaskets into the pan. not so much the the upper skirt or or the engine block. It's a little, uh, a little backwards.
I Mean in my estimation, that's all. It's abnormular. That's what I'm trying to say. Okay, the new used pan is coming in I Thought I uh moved my gasket for a second there and that would have not been cool.
Oops bolt gravity I Got here. Uh, where's my screw gun? There it is. See you buddy. have a good day I will fix your Saab or I'll give it the I'll give it the best chance it's got that's for sure.

Uh, I'm trying your trigger finger. He wants to have it towed and not driven here. so I uh I might end up Towing it. Also, how cool is that? I get to use my tow truck for tow truck stuff.

Getting out of my phalanges here. you know this may be like the only time ever I have put used oil back into an engine had it actually driven somewhere and left the parking lot. I would have uh I would have said no good on that one since this is brand new I'm not gonna I'm not gonna waste it. Ah, there you go.

The funnel is small at the bottom so it it fills the funnel faster than the funnel. fills the engine here a little more, a little more, a little more foreign. You guys are inside of my pan. Woohoo! Okay, now the oil filter is still full of oil because we didn't remove it.
so we should have an accurate engine oil level reading me and the survey says right there at the max. Mark Hooray! We're in good shape. Okay now get this funnel out of here. let's get our cat back on here.
We're not done yet and I say that because we made a mess. There's oil everywhere so this needs to be cleaned right now. She must be shining everything All right. Good to go all right guys.
We are done. so the oil changes in the future may now be completed without stripping more threads out of the drain, pallet plug or pan. words. So uh, that was the repair that was the snafu that we had to overcome during this regular service on this car.
Uh, hopefully the next guy does not do that to this oil pan again because uh, the supply of these oil pans is starting to run out and uh, I Ordered two or three or four of them and managed to only get one and it took like two months. So so to the next guy, don't strip the oil plugs. Stop doing that please. We're running out of oil pans.
We have no more oil pan. Reserves and I mean this. So all right guys. I'm gonna go ahead and close this out.

Im past mid 50s, my dad who was a kid during WWII told me that his dad, my grand father, would drain the oil from his car. Filter it threw my grandmoms used stockings. And put it back into his car during the war. Since u couldnt get new oil at that time. The linen leg hose was so fine that any debrie in the oil was filtered out of his pre war car oil. So he could use it again.
Had an 03 Range Rover come in because the oil change place stripped the drain plug in the lower oil pan they were trying to say they didn’t do it 😂lol they paid for it and lost a customer that took all his cars there 😮
I heard if you drill a small hole at the bottom of funnels they drain faster.
Hey Ray, when using the little impact I’ve always wondered if it has a torque limiter. When I’m doing oil pans the workshop manuals always state about 10 NM of torque on an M6 bolt. Good job as always 👍🏻

My kids car had some rubber screw and a toggle clamp for a drain plug, I take it stripping dran pan screws is a comon problem, and what do you do if you cant get a replacement part?
I've seen a thumb screw used on an excavators, it seems to me you could take the pan off drill out the threads add a plug cover with a drain hole you turn but don't remove this clamps on the inside and outside to seal. And the new center drain has a rubber dust cover plug you put it in. This device would cover any hole in flat metal and be a perment replacement part. You can also add a hose onto it to run all the way down to a drain pan.
As far as reuse the oil. Yes but filter it with a coffee filter before you put it back in the motor or use a magnet to remove any metal threads from going into the top of the motor and doing dammage.
You cant just pour it back into the motor.
You can pump it back into the oil pan. Becuse its going to pump threw the oil filter. As a side tool a machine to dbl filter used oil into a 5 gallon container to reuse, the pump pushing the oil past 2 oil filters. That short use its not broken down by carbon or gas.

Ford fixed this by doing a drain plug that is hand screwed in/out (cheap to replace once they’re worn out too). I went through two oil pans when I owned a Chevy because service guys were stripping them out.
couple things. When i worked at a autoparts store they sold oversize drain plugs for just such a situation, are these no good for some reason?
Also, what about helicoils (or whatever other brand)
Given the trouble you had getting a new pan, I imagine there are reasons these solutions are not good.
If the thread on the oil sump plug has been overtightened then there is a small chance there is metal shavings from the plug or pan in the oil itself or around the plug hole and that would have came out in the oil when it was drained. I would have at minimum run the oil through a tight strainer before putting it back in my car! Tell a lie, I would have put new oil and filter back in my car.

Suggestion; Send wife unit to Target and have her find you a metal fine mesh handled colander to put at the top of the funnel and filter and debris pouring the used oil back into the engine.

Yes its ok to reuse drained oil as you have a clean bucket and the oil has significant life remaining.

How do you stand the clanking noise from the hoist safety locks as they go up? I have the same hoist and the noise is so goddamn loud. It doesn't sound as loud on the video but IRL it is very loud. I hold the locks open manually until I reach the height I need.

I used my Suzuki Geo metro as a tow truck despite it's blowing head gasket. I rescued a dihatsu cupra (minature Volkswagen beetle) from the middle Lane of a 3 lane one way gyratory system. Complete stranger, I noticed their light were very dim then they just stopped. Cute little car, I had the tow roap that had not been used in ten years, do why not, I felt like doing g a good deed with the limited miles I have left in the motor.
"We gotta conserve resources" as he replaces a whole metal pan that could have been fixed with a god damn thread chaser if he wasn't an idiot. But "we don't gouge customers here".

But I never cared for jag motors. I have a complete running low mile mercedes with a great running motor and trans . If I were 20 years younger and still had all my equipment I would tackle it. But 3 decades of painting and wrenching

Can’t wait for the Saab story! Hopefully it’s not the ECU. They like to cook themselves on the 9-3. FYI if that is the issue, when you have the ECU replaced or repaired, they sell spacers to keep the ECU cooler. Highly recommended.
Actually a better design to machine in the gasket channel to the block instead of the pan. The block is significantly stiffer and precisely machined and that allows the manufacture of a stamped steel pan to be made cheaply and still seal better than a traditional sandwiched gasket would. I wish more manufacturers would do this.
You should take that pan to a welding shop and have a new plug hole installed
FOR decades & decades & decades & decades LUCAS ELECTRIC provided the electrical systems
for Jaguar cars. Jag had a reputation for building fine motorcars which did not like the wet. Which is
curious because England is a cool, wet & foggy place. When FORD bought Jag the first thing they
did was fire LUCAS & redesign the electrical systems using standard off the shelf FORD pieces. Jag
has not had any wet weather problems since.

Next oil pan you get that is stripped out, take it off and weld a nut on the inside of it. Good way to save a non replaceable part.
Do you run into additional licensing and insurance concerns if you tow someone or is it mostly covered by auto shop insurance? Or do avoid it if you don't charge for the tow?
It IS saved IF you budgeted a certain amount for groceries based on their inflated price, and then paid the lower price. If you are budgeting, and one of your budgets doesn't get used up for the month, that goes into savings. At least how it is supposed to work. People don't budget, and those that do don't plan on paying the store's inflated "normal" pricing.

Saving used oil?? And this comes from the guy that refuses to fill a brand new oil filter with new oil from a sealed container because he thinks it might introduces contaminants directly to the bearings. I will take my chances on a brand new filter with an unopened bottle of oil that has been wiped clean vs letting oil drain into a "cleaned" drain pan via the dirty undercarriage of a vehicle with 150 some thousand miles on it. Not to mention the oil draining from a stripped plug that we can clearly see the treads coming out with the drain plug. Suppose any of those stripped threads ended up in the oil in the pan?? $70 vs $5000 engine??? Conserving resources and not being wasteful?? Are you kidding?? You wear latex gloves all the time and you use brake cleaner by the case!! Get real man!! Trying to be cool when it doesnt pay ray

Would have taken the opportunity to put fresh oil in again. The oil does not look clean at all on camera, a extra fresh oil change would not have hurt this engine.

It would've been so easy, to just charge them for the new oil, after all, they own a Jaguar, LOL!
But instead, you saved them quite a bit of money, as well as did a little to help the environment, by now disposing of perfectly good oil.

Oh, man. Saving oil doesn't make sense unless it's a new vehicle with few miles.
I would just consider it as an oil flush and just be done with it. $70 is nothing compared to some major issues that could follow from used oil.
The only way to save money on something is not to buy it in the first place.
I have refilled motor oil but that was on a JDM Honda engine that i pre-filled while on the stand to perform compression testing then found out that the oil pan had a pinhole in it. I clean captured the oil back into the jug then refilled the engine with the new oil pan installed but passed the oil through a fine screen. Screening is recommended.
Finally after months we get our first "Doodly-Do." Wife unit parks where you need to be because she is always thinking about you!!! She is very kind. It in the vows "Rich or poor sickness or health Parking space availability…."

Ray , could you have rethreaded the old pan and fitted a slightly larger plug instead of replacing the pan ? Maybe if pan wasn’t available?
I know you won’t take the time but I would repair that pans drain threads by either going to a larger size or welding in a new plate.
Oil pan easy fix, drill the spot welds off the threaded plate inside the oil pan and remove the threaded plate, clean up and mig weld an appropriate nut on the inside of the oil pan–fixed! As for the pan seal, metal pans do not have these type of seal in the pan, only alloy pans do. What you have there is normal (ever seen those type of seals on a pressed steel transmission pan?)

Curious why customer did not let this go till the next oil change the drain plug was clearly not leaking and you would not have to dick around saving oil. I am a heavy diesel mechanic and a oil pan leak repair saving 10 gallons a pain in the ass most customers will wait till the next oil change it is just logical.

The oil flow from funnel is greater when the drain plug is open.
Opinion time – What do you think about the use of a Fumoto oil pan valve instead of the drain bolt ?

Nowt wrong with that. If that was my Jag I'd completely agree with reusing that oil. It's expensive stuff and those engines don't last long with the cheap stuff 😉
