In this video I bring you along as I swap out the pads and rotors on the front of a Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 2.5. Pretty easy job really. -Enjoy!

Thanks bro that was an excellent brake change

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty Sexton says:

What ft/lbs do the lug nuts torque at? Please no fig/newtons

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Brophy says:

Great job, quick and to the point! I donโ€™t like vw but when the daughter wants one you have to fix the common stuff!

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jonathan Jones says:

    What about bleeding the brakes?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Driveway Garage says:

I'm doing brakes on a 2000 VW today, my first brake job on a VW and it looks pretty simple. An elderly lady called me yesterday to see if I work on other people's vehicles because I always have some vehicle sitting out front that I'm working on to flip. She said that her husband has vertigo and can't do it I told her that I would help them out. I'm watching videos just to make sure it's nothing weird to do the brakes. Thanks for the great video as usual.

I drove wrecker for AAA for a while and I still remember the first flat change I did on a Rabbit. Seriously thought I'd broken off the stud or something. Then we were on unlevel ground and was a royal pain to get the spare mounted. Did LOVE towing those old VWs. Easiest car on the planet to hook. No laying in the mud just two T-hooks and a 4×4 and away you go!

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars The King says:

HAHAAAA…stumbled upon this while looking for the torque settings on the caliper bolts, stayed for the witty repartee! Subscribed

I have 2 New Beetles. an '03 and an '06. My '06 has 279,000 on it. If you want "genuine" VW parts then you can pay the difference! OEM spec parts from Napa (not a sponsor) etc, are just fine with me, as long as the pads are ceramic. There is no need to pay 5x as much for the same quality. If I know ahead of time, I often order my parts from ECS Tuning, (European Car Service). Their branded parts are high quality, and sometimes as little as 1/10th the cost.
EX: Fuel pump for my '06. Special pump for a METAL tank.
    $1,050 from VW.
    $750-$850 from local parts places.
    $150 from ECS.
    What would you do?
More mechanics should hook up with ECS Tuning.

The idea of using bolts instead of studs is that the bolts don't rust up and they don't sheer off or break when trying to remove nuts. What is a good inexpensive scam tool to do an 'ABS pump test/brake bleed'??? I have a 2000 VWGolf with 398,000 miles that I put all new brake rotors and pads. Then the master cylinder went out. I replaced it, but the brake lines were frozen to nuts. Tore them up removing…junkyard time. Now I need to bleed.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michigeo says:

One newton-metre is equal to the torque resulting from a force of one newton applied perpendicularly to the end of a moment arm that is one metre long. The nonstandard notation Nm occurs in some fields. You know meters is what the whole world is using except 'merica

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Teresa X. Roberts says:

Did my front 2009 new pads and rotors and pads are scraping in rotors even when brakes are not pressed. Sounds horrible. ??? Do I need new calipers too or is it a different issue ?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bob King says:

    Thanks Man.

Jeep compass stank bolts in canada they callem lol

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mojoblues66 says:

"Whatever a Newton-Meter is". It's the unit used by 96% of this planet's population, or 7.7 Billion people, to measure torque. But you ignorant Americans probably think you're alone on this planet.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bulldogs#1 says:

One newton-metre is equal to the torque resulting from a force of one newton applied perpendicularly to the end of a moment arm that is one metre long. One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass at the rate of one metre per second squared in the direction of the applied force. 1 N-m = 0.74 Ft-lbs of torque.

It is a brave man who works on the modern Beetle. Years ago I had a boss who owned a VW dealership and I promise you that service department was the big money maker, even during the bad recession. Made big money. Parts are crazy expensive

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mikeyboy2154 says:

No. A Nm is a measure of pain in numb nuts.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars w2dmw says:

I am sort of surprised, you don't give a small dab of DEOXIT on most all connectors, before you reconnect, as a matter of routine, as the FLUID FILM is….
    ……nice job, Rick, as always…!!!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bmwild19 says:

Do the rear brakes. Thatโ€™s a good time. Make sure you have your 14mm triple square.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lane Morrow says:

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars loganx77 says:

Hello Sir. A quick question. I changed the rotors (discs) and pads on my car but I had to drill out the set screws (they rounded off on me). afterwards I am getting a strange wosh wosh sound. it comes and goes. Can it be the missing set screws?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Curtis Christiansen says:

You said that Chryslers use a similar brake pad wear system that turns on the brake light when itโ€™s time for a brake service. Now I know for sure itโ€™s time to service the front brakes on our โ€˜05 dodge van! Thanks for the information!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars George Galpin says:

    Why silicone on the piston?

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matija Ferenฤek says:

So what would make the rotors wear like that? I did my own brake job on a mk5 GTI, and the same thing happened after some years – I attributed it to my own incompetence because I didn't clean the hub and grease the sliders, but now it looks like it's a VW thing.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wes Dotterer says:

is there an Arizonian counterpart to SMA? I'd be curious seeing the same repairs done except without NY threadlocker.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sean Souza says:

Is it just me or does every vw beetle smell like a box of crayons inside?

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars K W says:

hm… i've never seen one side of the rotors being that bad before, could that be an issue with the caliper(s)?

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Timo Wallin says:

Heh and im fread of rarely seen USA cars plastic connectors. But i must say you do exactly like i do it(first you have to put it in) on every car USA Europe or what ever..

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alan Torrance says:

125 Newton Metres is the same as 92.2 Ft Lb. "Newton metres — Whatever that is". Smart Guy — lovely display of sarcasm. It is a measure of torque, of course. I learnt that in my physics class (in an Academic Course, not Trade Course) at school when I was 18 years young (many, many years ago).

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tunin tunin says:

German cars used to be good quality, they are down with the Chrysler\Fiat now-days , just more expensive. Over-engendered, built to get you when the warranty expires.

Mr. O is the only one that make changing brake interesting and fun to watch.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars giantgeoff says:

Lug bolts vs Wheel studs vis-a-vis VW The year 1937 The cheapest possible design, 20 fewer parts per car. 1946, Not like we have the resources to change it. Heck! We're fighting for ever spare cabbage and turnip! My S.O.'s 2003 Passat came with a plastic (What else) wheel alignment pin in the tire change tool kit.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 19marshall80 says:

Nice work as always :)…If the calipers were painted would you use a screw driver to remove the retaining clip…I personal don't like the chipping paint.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phil W says:

Nm = neuton meter…or use VW specs of Guetentiten. ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars oldblue cookie says:

Hi Eric, when you are Torquing the wheels I noticed that you have the vehicle on the ground. The proper way is to torque the wheels while the vehicle is still on the lift. The reason is that there is not to have any weight on the wheels at all. Thanks and I always watch your videos.

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheMississippiJoe says:

Have you ever seen the Red Green show, you remind me of that guy…extremely funny. Thanks for making lockdown a little more bearable.

Are you still cashing in your iron and donating to the rescue?

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 316 Automotive says:

No lug studs: you get used to it. Saab's/Volvo's have lug bolts. Ehh…

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Dyckman says:

Eric, I enjoy the brake videos, always learning something and saving bucks !!

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Steven says:

I'm waiting on my brake job until this blows over who cares about new brakes when your dead.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joselito Rodriguez says:

Is the snap on mid rise lift for sale

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tyler h says:

Funny story about the lack of wheel studs, they have a massive problem with loosening up if you don't re-torque them. Every car I see on the side of the road missing a tire with an inch of brake disc ground off is a Volkswagen.
