I have a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country with over 196,000 miles. My gauges were going crazy, every light on the dash was on, it was rough idling, and it got to the point it didn’t want to start. All the ground wires were checked and cleaned for corrosion and tightened down. I changed the alternator because It tested bad. I cleaned the battery posts and put battery post protectant on them. I changed the air filter too. The problems remained. I tried cleaning the IPM Fuse/Relay box because the connectors had corrosion on them. When I flipped the box over, 3 connector pins fell out. I had to order a new one from the Chrysler dealer. It was 20 days out. It cost me $774 including tax. I changed the spark plugs and spark plug wires. I don’t think they put never seize on the threads of the spark plugs or lubricant on the boot covers. I put them on the new ones. After I get the air intake cleaned, I am doing an oil change and then it will be done. 🥰❤️
I LOVE watching your videos Ray!! You know what you’re doing and you’re an honest mechanic. 🥰❤️

I appreciate how you thought ahead about the oil plug gasket and didn’t take the easy way out by just putting the plastic one on. Good on you!

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chuck Ray says:

With all the oil changes I've done i have never replaced the washer. I have now. Great point. Took care of the drip I use to get on my motorcycle. Thanks Rainman. At 65 always learning.

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DeadEyeDave says:

How often do you suppose Jiffy Lube or similar fast-oil change businesses check the drain plug gasket? Never? That's what I thought.

REEE! Cringing on the tightening!! LOL Do the same on electrical units and get the same 'Reeeing'…ALSO re-using the rusty nuts…reeeeeeee…

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Kennedy says:

Or… Maybe the first shop saw the loose battery connector and tried to sell an old lady a new TIPM? Fix the connector and send it home

Maybe she needs to send Guido over there to "explain it to them" (Sopranos style)

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Direct River31 says:

So what happened after did it get fixed or did she need to get the timp part replaced?

I didn’t like the fact that nothing explodes or catches fire. Don’t get me started on the lack of police violence and hate… This whole idea of teaching in a positive and entertaining way is just too. Positive. Sarcastic fan till the end. Great job Ray.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom R says:

God bless you for doing the right thing.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Blacky says:

The crazy thing is…. If I where your customer and even if this did NOT solve the issue, you would get me as a permanent customer in your shop just because you tried to save me a lot of money. And it had to be done anyway so there is no loss even if the TIPM is needed still.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Gillis says:

A TIPM in a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram is a Totally Integrated Power Module. It is another computer module to my knowledge just like the pcm.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kelsy Cunningham says:

Neighbor had a price of $1800 from a local shop for work needed to her SUV. I know these guys, they're well intentioned and I find them honest.
They found a bunch of codes, yadda yadda, she asked me to take a look. I have a resistive battery tester and within a minute I found her 9 year old factory battery was pooched. A new battery and a few trips around the block, the check engine light reset and she's been running great ever since. Mechanics can be like anybody else, always looking for the most complicated answer.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bruce Woods says:

When you said TIPM, I thought you said, the other auto shop said she needed to Tip ‘Em 🤣🤣

"Feeding the Troll". Keep hands and feet away from cage!

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars William Mims says:

Well, the TIPM is pretty much a central failure point for Dodge/Jeep…it contains the relays, some of them hard mounted, and the ecm. Wipers intermittent? A hard mounted relay is going bad, or it's a cracked solder joint at the relay. Same for 100 other issues…but yeah, the first thing to check k should be battery connection.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tom ruth says:

Starting problems? 1.) Check battery terminals. 2.) Check tightness of alternator belt. 3.) Test battery

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dhldriver says:

    Nice fair mechanic

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dadigitechman says:

Repairing TIPM's tùrned into a great side gig for me. Thanks Dodge! It could still be the TIPM. The contacts on the fuel pump relay burn up and and as this happens when the contacts close sometimes they make enough contact to work and sometimes nope untill one day its just nope.
Edit: when changing oil filters i always punch a hole and drain them first… less mess😊

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars solobabyface says:

I would bet the other company would have not changed the tipm and probably just put new battery terminals on and would have charged her also for the terminals and tipm. A lot of shady mechanic shops these days. Glade to see some people still do honest work to fix the issue.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Green says:

Came across this again. Thought of an example of weird stuff on weak battery/bad contacts. About 18 months ago on my '17 Wrangler I was getting an occasional weak start, which I called a half start. Instead of the robust start where the RPMs rise and then drop to idle, instead it would attempt to start, chug along at 500 RPM or a bit less with NO throttle response. Turn it off, second attempt good. No other issues. After a couple of these, my first thought was – BATTERY. It still had the factory battery but it was over 3 1/2 years old – most only last about 2. Installed new battery – no more issues to date.

With all the interconnected electronics today, a good batter and good connections are critical. The driver no longer starts the engine. You bump the key to send a signal to the computer to start the engine. A weak battery won't grind slowly, it just won't start and the electronics will go crazy.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Travis Fox says:

    Rainman: fix problem.
Other shop: order expensive part, replace expensive part, replace battery terminal connector (so they actually fix the problem), core old (100% functional) TIPM, make lots of money.

    Dealers suck.

Hi RMR! We have a dodge can that does this! 2002. Was it the tipm or fuse box module? Love your videos. I'll get my hands on the car and check it out sooner or later. It's at my dads friend/ mechanic

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven Miller says:

Granted, I'm just a backyard mechanic… because of that, I read everything, about everything I'm doing to my vehicles. I work damn hard to understand everything about what I'm doing. I've never seen in any manual/procedure, etc about pre-filling an oil filter. I've read on numerous occasions that you have to add extra oil to compensate for the fact the filter is empty on the first start. So… the "rrreeeeeee" crowd, is just going to have to take a breath 🙂

  49. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars D. R. Dotter says:

Nice new battery connectors held on by the old raggedy nuts. Went from potentially looking amazing to looking like new ass. Disappointed, to say the least.

  50. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Patrick Jones says:

Reeeee. It's not safe getting under a car only held up by a jack. Reeeeeeeee
