Hey you guys, good day to you! Welcome back! Real short video I Want to talk about towels? And the reason I want to talk about towels is people keep asking why they always see me walking around and I'm holding towel and I guess some other folks on the internet land they do the same thing as well and but those same folks have said that. They've also noticed other mechanical technicians that do not, uh, constantly fiddle and fidget and hang on to a towel. and I guess that's user preference. um I like towels because I'm always kind of wiping stuff off my hands and or gloves.
And the other reason that I am so fond of towels is Once Upon A Time In Another Life I Worked in a kitchen. we made about thirty thousand dollars worth of food every single day. and it was. It was messy back there, a bunch of dudes in a small tight kitchen, a lot of stuff making messes, food flying around, whatnot, so you always had a towel with you just to dry yourself off, wash your hands, wipe things down, clean your knives, clean your spatulas, clean anything.
So I've developed through two trades in my careers a habit of always having a towel with me and I don't know it. just it turned into me constantly keeping a towel in my hand or pocket or wherever. Um, don't know I don't know if everybody does things like that, it's just something I do like I mentioned earlier, there have there's been other YouTubers mentioning that always have a towel in their hand. Maybe it's personal preference? Maybe it's like a brain cork kind of thing.
Who knows. But that is the reason for the towels in the hand. It's uh, it's just lifelong habit of constantly doing things that, uh, it required a towel or needed a towel soon thereafter. So I just got into the habit of constantly keeping towels around.
It's my thing I like blue towels.
Never noticed. Guess I have better things to pay attention to. 😆
Imagine the look on Yester-Ray’s face if you could travel back in time all those years to tell him one day he’ll make a 2 minute video explaining why he clenches a towel as he works. And that video will garner an audience of 87.5K over a two day period. 😂
Shops still use the reusable towels since the 70's mechanics have used a uniform company.
it is good to be ready with the blue shop towels, you never know when you will need to wipe
something down. plus minimize the “dirt” on your hands.
When I was a mechanic I always had a shop towel hanging from my right hand pocket.
Drives me crazy to have dirty hands.
And when you bust your knuckles open towels absorb blood. 🙂
I always have rags around me, either to clean/wipe car parts/tools or to clean my hands/face

After I left the trade, it took a long while for me to stop reaching for my back pocket shop rag. If it was societally acceptable, I would wear one every day, as they are useful. 🙂

Hi Ray, I have been an amateur cook since I was a kid. I always to this day, at 50 now, I have a towel slung over my shoulder when cooking, still. I never pursued that career, however as a mechanic I always had towels on me to clean my hands and any smudge marks made or unexpected leaks that occur at times.
I always have a towel in hand or pocket. Working with oil and fluids more in hand, working on dry and dirty parts more in pocket. some people just like to keep the gunk off more than others.
Quality mechanic would carry a shop towel to respect the customer, wipe up after touching things or draining fluids.
Conviniant, I often am looking for a rag to wipe my hands, saves the jeans, and shirts, all the best to you and your loved ones

I don't why someone would question why someone else likes to use towels. Be it cloth or paper towels. I didn't realize or know that there is a correct procedure and protocol for towel use in a shop.

Not only do I have a towel in my hand but I have two stuffed in my right pocket and one stuffed in my left pocket. I don't wear a ball cap everywhere I go, what the hells is that about?
It’s a sad state, when you need to answer a question about a towel. Watch old movies, TV shows or anything that may have a mechanic or pump jockey in the background. RED towels were the fashion. Wipe your hands, check the oil (when gas attendants did that) wipe the pizza sauce off your cover-alls. It was a necessity. The BLUE towels took their place. It may also be considered a form of hygiene. A sense that you’re cleaning yourself.
In my younger years working in a Farm Tractor Equipment dealer, myself and the other mechanics always had a towel in a pocket and usually in one of our hands. If you are just looking or checking out something that you will be working on, you may need to wipe of grime to get a part number or whatever. It was always my experience that when you needed a towel, you didn't have one. Always best to be prepared.

I always had a red shop cloth towel in my back pocket when I worked in a garage years ago .
Since I was a kid back in the 60s and 70s most mechanics always had a towel in there pocket or in hand.

I'm a tech of 15 years I always keep a rag in my pocket or hands its just second nature to me.
I’m not a mechanic, but I am a body man. People don’t realize that just any ole rag or towel to wipe down a vehicle before paint is very critical. You can wash a used rag 50 times and it can still have contaminates on it that can ruin a paint job. I always turn to the blue towels with wax and grease remover for a perfect finish, every time.
How can I get a Fidget Towel and also be cool?
I work on a tube laser as a programmer/operator and I always have a towel with me… parts are dirty and I want my keyboard and mouse clean… so I use towels and gloves a lot just to keep my pc clean.
I have fixed aircraft, armoured vehicles, cars, motorcycles and small engines, to name a few, for over 50 years and have ALWAYS had a rag/towel in my hand or pocket, when working. It isn't a habit. I like to keep my hands, work, tools, clean. That way, my hands don't slip when using tools, they are clean when I pick them up and I don't leave marks everywhere. This is called Best Practice. I first saw it at the age of 17 watching the Swiss national sidecar racing team working on BMW Rennsport engine in the pits. They wiped a tool when they picked it up and again before putting it down.
What pops my cork is that someone would actually criticise this. They need to get out more. If you don't want to do it because you think it's silly, fine, but don't try to inflict a lower standard on us.. My tools, equipment and Workshop are immaculate and if it's all the same to you, I'll keep it that way. Grrr
When working on a car or project that gets my hands dirty, i do the same thing.
Often they end up somewhere weird like in my tool box, but when moving from grime to somewhere else it's nice to keep the contamination down.

I'm more concerned with mechanics that don't have towels on hand all the time. When working with oil, grease and brake fluid, I'd expect my mechanic to wipe off residue before they land their hands on any part of my car such as the interior or even the paint job. Brake fluid is pretty nasty. Just a few days ago, I caused stains (and paint fade) in my engine bay as I was refilling brake and clutch fluid. It only makes sense to expect mechanics that do this professionally to be more prepared and careful as they work on cars.
Can you imagine how annoying it is to fix a mechanical problem then end up having to spend more because of a paint job or detailing?
They're also good to have on hand in case of a sudden urge to launch a snot rocket.
Fully understand the need as I not necessarily carried one with me but needed one nearby.
Ive worked as a line mech for 25 yes, and allways had a rag in my back pocket, and a hand wipe/towel of sorts somewhere near me. For me it was a matter of cleanliness, and it was my preference, but hey… Ray, if ya gotta have it… do what makes ya happy…

I am a local handyman for 15 years now. I take my old t-shirts and cut them into paper towel size and use them as… towels. I always have one hanging out my back pocket.
They come in handy when you spill something or accidently cut yourself. For me it is a great solution for old damaged work shirts.
been retired for 14 years, i still carry 1/2-9/16 and 3/8-7/16 because it was the 2 most common wrenches the make adjustment on the machinery i worked on. i still get up at 3:30 am, old habits die hard.
Machine shop guy here – shop rag always in the back pocket. I suspect some folks that find this practice unusual are the same kind of folks that rarely get their hands dirty.

I drive for grab,an equavalent to uber here in S.E.A and i always have a towel beside me. So it goes to show,its personal for every trade,its kind of a habit.. even when i was a truck driver when i was younger,still had a roll of towels in the cab,still do now in my car.

It means that you are always trying to work as clean as you can there’s nothing worse than putting oily hands on a job .
I’m no mechanic as such but I always have a rag to hand as like you it’s just something I have always done . Love the channel & seeing the jobs you get upto .
One question I see you use a lot of Brake cleaner throwing cans away , have you ever thought of buying larger quantities and using a manual pump spray . I just bought a 5 litre container for £16 & pump spray bottle for £4. . As 500ml cans worked out around £5 each quit a big saving .

Lol somebody really thinks that carrying a towel is somehow weird? Its one part of normal everyday hygiene that many men tend to ignore. I always carry clean paper towel all the time in pocket of my clothes. I learned the hard way that using a lint free, soft, white paper towel is better than using any microfiber towels when cleaning/wiping painted surfaces from cars. Microfiber towels often have too strong absorption capacity and actually do remove very tiny bits of paint from 16+ years old cars and this happened to two of my cars, after I switched to paper towels it ended the issue of paint coming off from my current car when cleaning/wiping painted surfaces. I never use microfiber towels again to any old car's paint.

Blue towels. So when your friendly neighbor hood mechanic slips on a rounded fastener. You dont need too see the blood he spills working on your sh*t.
I worked in a shop, always had a red rag in my pocket. Never got into the blue towels much, not in a regular shop (maybe home shops) just because there's a lot of waste. Cloth rags got washed and picked up once a week along with uniforms. Always end up needing them, a quick wipe of the hands, wiping off a tool, wiping off part of the engine or something working on it, wiping any drips off fill/drain caps/plugs. Nothing got left goobered, boss was critical about that. No sloppy grease zerts, no dripping oil drain plugs, I never left grease on anything. Any potential user serviceable things like radiator cap, oil fill cap, dipstick handles (good for wiping dipsticks as well), washer fluid caps etc always got wiped clean. So if the owner needed to pop their hood for any reason those things they were likely to touch weren't grimy.
If at all possible once working on a vehicle hands got washed before touching anything in the interior. Everything got double checked, wiped/cleaned from steering wheel to ignition key, any knobs/buttons, shifter, floor mats pulled and thorough soap/water hand wash before pulling out of a bay. It was always clean not 'clean enough'. Also meant I should've picked up stock in corn husker's lotion since I worked without gloves and so many handwashes with gritty soap especially in winter was seriously chapping.
Tactile defensiveness. I'm not even a mechanic and I have a rag with me the moment I have to do anything with chemicals or grease etc. And Solvo soap to wash grease and dirt off my hands immediately afterwards. If Solvo is sold in the US, or whatever its equivalent.
Blue towels are easy to see. Black rags or towels get left behind and go through a belt system…

As far as that goes, you can't beat the blue shop towels. I've never had a mess I couldn't clean with those and I always have a roll in my car.
Way back in the day when I was a mechanic, I used to do the same thing because I hate handling greasy tools. I still do. These days, when I take a tool out of my tool drawer, I first make sure I have a rag or towel handy.
Also, if you're going to drive a customer's car, you don't want to leave grubby paw prints all over the upholstery and steering wheel.
OK, but what kind of towels is this? Disposable? Microfiber? Do you need to dedicate a washing machine to them?
My dad would always have his napkin in one of his hands during and after eating. My mother would always harrass him for it. Just one of those sweet memories I have of him.
I have worked as a mechanic way back when cars were simple and tended to pretty much all leak oil in various places. Admittedly these days you won't even get a car registered here with any sort of oil leak but back then, it pretty much had to be pouring out of it before it would get knocked back, it was more a matter of was it costing YOU more in oil than fuel, well, might be time to try and fix it. Engines would have oil and dust stuck to that oil you wouldn't want getting into engine internals, nor would you want to even touch the bonnet (hood for you Americans who drive on the wrong side) or any other bodywork so, a clean rag was essential, I'd have a pretty used up and oily one in the other pocket to wipe the heavy gunk off then a better wipe with the cleaner one before touching anything else after touching pretty much anything under the bonnet or ANYWHERE underneath the car where the wind would blow and spread the oil from the front all over the underside.
If you didn't have a big ugly black oil patch in your driveway, there was only 1 of 2 reasons. Either you didn't have a car and nobody ever parked in your driveway or, you'd just cleaned it thoroughly and flushed all that nasty stuff down the storm drains.
I was a mechanic for years so either i had one in my hand or back pocket.

To me this seems normal. When I'm in the shop I have Scott towels in my back pocket. I usually have Scott or paper towels in my back pocket as well when I'm grilling. I don't like the feel of grease on my hands.
I also developed the habit of having a towel or rag in my back pocket for quick and easy access to clean up spills, spots or wipe off my hands before handling customer vehicles and keys.
I genuinely get upset when I find oily/greasey finger markings on/in my car, or a relative's car, when picking up from the mechanic's shop. It just feels less professional. Or like, if they didn't care about cleaning up after themselves, what else didn't they care enough to do?

I think the guys with towels are actually doing some work and feel the need to keep cleaning their hands (and keep it off the customers cars) and the guys with no towels don't seem to get their hands too dirty for some reason. Draw your own conclusion as why that might be…..😀
Also, I've only been the one to work on my vehicles except for a few times. One of those few times, for a power steering pump replacement during the winter months ( I have no garage), my truck ended up with greasy paw prints on my door, door handle and steering wheel. Guess the "tech" coulda used a rag or two….
The commenter is obviously a young buck who never saw pretty much every old/experienced mechanic with a rag hanging out of their back pocket.
Possibly, he was a supervisor that never got his hands dirty or has a phobia relating to touching grease and oil?
More than likely he's that messy mechanic that leaves dirty fingerprints all over customers cars, and spills oil on their engine or around the workshop and never cleans it up🤣👍
