Hmmm……. very interesting video Ray. I’ve had similar scenarios go both ways. Lady brought her car to me for a second opinion as she’d been told the brake servo neeeded replacing. The servo was fine, problem was seized rear adjusters. Fixed that and gained a very loyal and easy to deal with customer.
Conversely, an older gentleman was continuously suspicious of not only everything he was told his car needed but whether the the work was carried out, despite my best efforts to be totally transparent. Situation came to a head when he wanted the pads on the front right only replaced. I refused, saying pads are replaced in axle sets. Did the work, showed him the old pads whereby he said “how do I know those pads came from my car?”
I’d had enough, and politely but firmly told him there was no charge for the pad change but never to bring his car back to me in the future as I was no longer willing to work on it and suffer the constant veiled accusations.

Never seen one so demanding on a vehicle service. I would have just looked at him dead serious and said I'm sorry we can't help you here sir. We don't work on Cadillacs here at this time. Lol

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars themeez1000 says:

Ugh I used to hate those customers. If it were me I would still to an inspection and record everything wrong. CYOA

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scooter30FTW says:

Why do they want the empty oil bottles back? Are they paranoid enough to think you're going to keep their oil and use some really cheap stuff in their vehicle?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Aaron Snowden says:

I learned the hard way never buy luxury cars lease them. And that is most important with German cars. They always break down.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Leviathan 68W says:

I hate to say it but this guy has obviously had some shady mechanics work on his car. I get what he is doing. Asking for the old parts back gives him piece of mind that you actually did the work he asked for.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew H says:

This Cadillac owner is special I mean last I checked no Cadillac of that body style or year range uses a crush washer Not only that but anyone that has experience with working with a Northstar knows that they are known for leaking and cost several thousands of dollars to fix so if the oil is not in the engine it’s on the engine

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ken C says:

Maybe that customer is on the autism spectrum, or has a bad case of OCD? [right now I'm reading "The Maid" by Nita Prose–the main character is definitely "on the spectrum"]

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars elektricsammy says:

… or maybe the customer is just a nasty s-o-b. ha ha.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars That's Funny 77 says:

These kind of customers are a pain in the ass but sometimes that are that way because they have been burned. So, in my shop I try to do everything I can to help them see that I am trustworthy and am not the guy that's going to burn or take advantage of them. The bit of extra care is usually worth it in the end (notice I don't say always) because they tend to be incredibly loyal customers once you've earned their trust. Not only that but they will refer the people they care about to you which is a great bonus.

Now, that being said, if this guy walks in my shop first time requesting all of this and just says "Hey, man, I've been burnt before and I've had bad experiences. I'm not saying that's how you do business but if you don't mind I'd like you to do this, this and this…". So long as he's polite, no problem, I get it. Now, if the guy comes in and says "I know how all you guys operate, here's what you're going to do so I don't get ripped off… this, this and this" and has a poor, accusatory attitude about it when I have never even seen him before, much less done anything to him to cause distrust, he can fu*k right off. I don't need to be disrespected for what others have done. However, I can understand someone new in my shop having reservstions if they've been screwed and are wishing to make sure they are dealing with an honest shop, again, if they are polite about it.

Just to be clear, I don't do automotive repair. I repair electronics but in a lot of ways, we deal with the same type people.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kenthatfr says:

Dictating the exact amount of oil? Just say he brought oil and fill it up with that. Wanted to see the washer before filling with oil? Yeah, that's not a guy that was burned, that's just a control freak.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin says:

Some people have gotten scammed and are traumatized for life. I think this was somebody who knew a little bit about cars but wanted to make sure you did it right so he asked for a crush washer as proof.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wes Gregg says:

I forgot to add: You're setting yourself up for grief when you accept a customer like that… and they want you to put some sort of "magic cure potion" into a transmission that already exhibits an obvious issue. If/when the issue doesn't go away, they'll be back to scream at you for "not putting the stuff in." If ends up happening, please be sure to upload a video about it, lol. EDIT: Oh. That'll teach me not to post a comment before I've watched the entire video.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ely Powell says:

If there were not so many shoddy mechanics out there fucking over people every chance they got, this customer would not feel the need to do this. I avoid taking my car to mechanics as much as possible.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JoAnn Clinard says:

I suspect the owner is on a fixed income? That Northstar will break him!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alain Bourgault says:

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jesse wynne says:

He prob has a leak and thinks it’s cuz someone put a double gasket on the plug in the past..so now wants to b sure that doesn’t happen again by having you return the old washer..but with that much oil showing as leaking it seems more like gasket or gaskets need to be replaced or GM Notorious
Problem with a bad oil pressure sending unit..that would piss oil everywhere..
And that trans fix is more for torque converter issues that stops it from shuttering and maybe shift a little better..it actually does work I used it in my Honda but If I remember correctly on the back of the bottle it states not to use on ford or GM transmissions. And caddies are GM so he may end up doing more harm then good

Assuming the owner is elderly, having cared for my grandmother, they tend to be very wary of people doing services since it is so easy to get ripped off sadly. That being said, I see this as a "test" to make sure you are a person who does as you should and can be trusted. That said if you have their trust, it is a sign of respect.

  38. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Milwaukee Road Jim says:

I think the customer request is due to too many shops trying to sell other services. I went in for a noise in the exhaust system and they found and welded a broken hanger. But they also brought me a cabin air filter full of straw and bird feathers. I knew it wasn't mine but not able to prove it, I let them change it anyway. I now inspect my cabin air filter before I get service so I know what condition it's in. I also label my air box and cabin air filter housing with the date that I changed them. By the way, my Wix cabin air filter is grey. Don't try to tell me it's dirty just because it's grey

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Nelson says:

He wanted his old bottles back to prove that you used his oil and didn't put his oil in your car and dump in 7.5 quarts of no-name shop oil, or no new oil at all. I would have told him to take his business elsewhere, life is too short to work for anal-demanding old codgers.

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jack Fisher says:

  52. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Marty's 4x4 says:

The last time I had my oil changed, the shop destroyed my oil pan —- I mean, it is still on there but it leaks at the drain plug. I would sometimes change my own oil and sometimes take it to a shop, depending on how much I was working. Anyway, I changed my oil, then a shop changed it the next time, the next time I was going to change it. Also, the drain plug had never leaked until that last oil change at a shop. I couldn't break the drain plug loose.. I hooked another wrench on the first one, still couldn't I then tried a socket with an 18" ratchet… I couldn't budge it. I then put a 2' piece of pipe on the ratchet and the plug started moving but it was tight for the first 1/2 turn… It is an F-150 with a drain plug that has a rubber gasket — it looks like a flat rubber gasket with an o-ring made into it but only on one side — I hadn't seen that type before. Also, for the first 100,000 miles, I used the original drain plug and gasket with no problems. And with every previous vehicle, I used the same drain plug for the life of each vehicle. I've never had any vehicles with a crush washer on the drain plug, like I keep seeing Ray and other YouTubers showing me. Anyway, I replaced the drain plug & gasket, I cleaned up the threads with a tap, I've tried o-rings; I just haven't tried a sealant. The shop denied using an impact on it but they must have. I've called them, I've visited them, I've complained to the corporate office. They just won't accept responsibility for the damage they caused.
One day, I'll break down and buy a new oil pan. 🙁

  53. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Craig Riker says:

Customers can be fired and this guy isn’t worth the hassle.

I hope the transmission holds up for them.

I think they would also appreciate you would not open their box. That displays consideration and integrity.

Loved the video Ray! I want to preface I have no idea why this guy does it like this some people just are like that, some have had bad experiences to make them untrusting of even professionals, I'm just going off of what I've dealt with in similar situations every once in awhile in my computer repair shop. A customer will bring parts in with their computer to replace or they only want something very specific done and nothing else. I've had customers do stuff just like this where they bring in a computer for something specific. I.e. "I need a cleanup and only a cleanup, do not check for anything else." Or "I want you to replace my storage drive(or any part) with this one I brought and give me my old one back." A lot of the times we run into situations where what the customer thinks is wrong or what Google told them was wrong isn't what is wrong, like the reason their computer is slow is not because it has viruses and needs a cleanup but because they have an 8 plus year old mechanical HDD that is bad or wearing out and then they get mad we recommend a replacement, all you can really do is make a suggestion or recommendation and if their drive dies or gets as slow as molasses that's on them if they don't listen to your recommendation. Same thing with them bringing in a part to replace and us realizing they got an incompatible part, they can and will get mad at me or my guys sometimes even though it's not our fault, some people just believe they are incapable of making such a mistake. I don't want to go into story time because I have too many. I just wanted to say it's just something you have to deal with in the service industry, regardless of if it's automotive or not, after watching your channel this last year or so I notice many similarities between our very different jobs. The way I deal with it is just doing exactly what they say, give my recommendation if it's needed, and do what they tell me they want done. Then it's not my fault when what they thought was going to work doesn't. It's really all you can do. It's probably come in handy that you record a lot, especially because in my experience these are the types of customers that come back later to complain or blame stuff on the shop/tech, I bet it has come in handy for you. That's why my shop has had cameras over tech stations from day one. Sorry for the long post, kind of venting because I don't get to about stuff like this a lot lol. Great video and I think you handled it well!

Guess what shop will NEVER touch my truck again.

  91. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars BGOWRWBW says:

Enjoyed the video as always, but sorry to say you did the math wrong. Maybe someone explained this much farther down in the comments. The amount you put into the car was actually the amount that should have been remaining in the bottle. That is why the oil level did not come up to the middle of the dipstick. As someone commented earlier, 1/2 quart is 473 ml no matter how full the bottle is. You needed to add 473 mi to the car, then subtract that from the starting level of the bottle to find out how much remains the bottle. If the starting level was 800 ml, then you subtract 473 from 800, and the amount remaining in the bottle is 327 ml. If the starting level in the bottle had been 600 ml, then you add 473 ml to the car and have 127 ml remaining in the bottle. If the starting level had been 473 ml, you add 473 ml to the car and have 0 ml remaining in the bottle. No disrespect intended, you are a great mechanic.

Just making your day more interesting…. Obviously a person who had been screwed to the wall by rip off garages in the past. Having been part of one of those rip off garages 50 years ago, and having realised what a thieving bunch of bastards my local Toyota garage is more recently I can only sympathise with him. He is not to know you are a diamond.

I don't understand the high price synthetic oil but then a Car Quest filter, lol. They could've spent the extra money for a good AC Delco filter. My Ford gets only Motorcraft oil and filter with a quart of Lucas . It does have 320000 miles and still running. And that's a 2003 f150 with 4.6 Triton V8. I am just seeing how long it can last. Lol. Been a good truck as it had 74000 miles when I bought it at 17 years old. I'm almost 40 now but we've been together for a while, lol.
