I can say is roofers don't have anything on this concrete guy and his his trailers. Uh tail heavy check that out just wow. We're rolling about 70. Now down the interstate look at that hello everybody good day to you good morning good afternoon good evening.
Whichever one applies to you at this current point in time we're gonna go with that this is a 2008 jaguar xj customers say it's the uh ac is underperforming surprise surprise summertime in sunny florida and uh the uh the sunroof leaks. I guess water comes in so uh we're gonna figure that out and it's hot in here begin ventilation now 155 185 miles on the odometer. Some of you guys might recognize this car. We had some crispy critters uh.
Eat some fuel injector wires on this uh. At one point in time you know there was one more thing that and i forget what it is something oh power steering power steering. That's what it was i guess uh this morning. The power steering was inoperative.
Why are there home depot buckets full of liquid in parking. Lot. That doesn't go there. I'll investigate that later morning.
Seatbelt morning morning here let's open up this uh sunroof. I want to take a look at the seals. All right i don't i don't see a seal here on the chassis. It's got to be on the glass itself.
Let's uh. Let's close this again. Yeah. Yeah.
It looks like nope stop stop doing that stay stay right here. Yeah. I do believe this is the seal. It's a little hardened is this replaceable yeah.
It should be replaceable. I can peel it out of there that means. I've got to remove the glass. Okay let's close it again uh.
No the other closed. There we go what what are you doing why are you doing this to me stay. Okay. Yeah.
Yeah. I think the seal actually occurs right here. A little weird yeah. It has to be here.
Because it can't be anywhere. Else the odd thing is though is any water that comes in should make its way down the drains right here. There's a drain. There and a drain.
There and the tube's going to run down the pillar and then drain outside of the car in the fender. Oh. That was hot i touched it so there's really only going to be one way to confirm this leak or not and that's going to be to give this the garden hose test. So let's go ahead and back this thing back out and go over to the car wash station.
Backing out safety cool okay. See what we've got going on here garden hose simulating. An afternoon shower over top the sunroof. We're going to go inside and check for leaks.
We're going to have to make haste because i don't want water to come in and get all over the floor. So here we go run oh. No we're getting wet inside run all right. Now.
Let's see what's going on with some water here hmm. I don't know well i wonder if the unit is failing to close all the way a little odd. It seems to be sealed right now very interesting yeah so far so good. I don't see any water in here.
I don't see any water marks. Where water has been coming in that's a good telltale indicator. A lot of times. If you see like water staining around the headliner in any kind of area. That's indicated that water came in but i'm not seeing that in this car just yet and i'm also feeling around up here. I don't uh. I don't feel any moisture all right you know i'm just gonna have to let time do its thing and i'll check back in on this in a moment. So i think what i'll do to be efficient is i'll let this thing just keep pouring water on the seal.
I'll jump back out and i'll go diagnose the ac stuff real quick. I'm probably not going to do much recording of that because we've seen enough ac videos uh in in recent weeks. And i don't want to bore you guys or get you burnt out on ac work. So i'll touch base on it a couple times here and there so stay tuned don't go anywhere interesting challenge.
I need to keep water from coming in but i have to get out and i also have to pop an easy hood. But i don't remember where the lever is is that it nope that's uh that's something else uh. Oh backed myself into a corner on this one didn't i maybe. It's over there maybe.
It's down there no no no no no what do i do oh i see it no i i know where it is it's over here click all right let's do the mad dash to jump out powering down. I'm gonna take the key with me in case this car decides it wants to lock me out here we go run. I'm gonna move the stream. A little bit so we get some uh some greater coverage of the affected area.
There we go all right back inside again. I was looking around and i saw a little bit of water right here. There's a little bit right there. Too i hope you guys can see if we uh.
If we look a little farther back. It's definitely definitely coming in look at there look at that it's pouring in found it all right let's get out of here and shut this water off before i flood. This guy's car all right so this could be an exercise in futility. But i want to just kind of clean up the seal area here and also around the paint.
Where the lip is just to see if uh. I can arrest the the leakage so to speak. Perhaps. There's just a bunch of dirt.
There. And that dirt is allowing a path for water to escape gently. Yeah. So i'm kind of just going to wipe that down just to make sure that we don't start changing.
Rubber parts and pieces of glass for no reason there up there we go now i can clean it now like i said this may be an exercise in futility but i want to do it anyway at the very least the glass cleaner will make the car smell good. What is this nothing okay okay let's open this again. And then we can inspect for uh something that may have caused that leak to occur click yeah again i don't see anything here that would allow for a primary seal between the body and the glass except for this seal around the glass. So if cleaning it off didn't work. We're going to have to remove this glass and change the seal in it fun. That's going to be fun all right okie dokie. Several moons have passed and we now bring ourselves back to the jaguar. I have received a factory jaguar sunroof seal and we're gonna peel this old seal off of here and to see if we can get this thing replaced like i said earlier.
I'm assuming that this is the reason that all that water is coming in because there i don't see any other seals here. I could be wrong and i'm going about this all wrong. But um. I like i said i don't see anything else so uh let's go ahead and get this apart and see what i can do by getting this new seal on here it kind of presses in and rides inside of a groove on the glass right here.
It's actually a very tight fit. Too what i'm thinking let's get it started and work our way around all right good good good. I'll get the back side off and then we'll tilt the glass inside with the electric motor and then we'll pull the front side off all right okay. Let's see we want to go we want to close this and then scooch back some all right all right here you go.
I imagine. This is gonna be the hard part maybe not okay. It's just going to take a while it's going to be a slow process rear loud noises hey. This is working that's gonna have to do all right let's close it and get the back side that's the seam.
Good that'll be on the side of the window. All right get a little bit of tilt. All the tilt. There we go almost i need i need to get more in on this corner here.
But i cannot reach i know this one this one yes is it gonna work sure is this works better than my finger there beautiful okay. This corner is a little worse than the other one was i think i don't know maybe not i'm cynical cool almost there oh it's nice and tight too this is good come on all right rolled. No i don't want that unroll. Oh yeah just pulled itself into the groove love.
It okay. That is uh. One new seal. Let's go back to the garden hose and see if that fixed our problem and it better fix the problem.
I don't want to take the headliner out of this backing out the jaguar winder's up got this set up on the antenna. The mirror is holding the weight of the hose. No reading necessary. This is standard operating procedure.
Everything is nice and saturated let's head back inside. And see. If the water is coming in around this corner. Oh no look.
It's still coming in like right right. Here. Let's get the hose off of this i don't want to flood. The jaguar ah that's unfortunate bleep bleep bleep.
Okay pose powering down fail all right let's reinspect this again yeah. It's coming in like right right here that's where it's coming in i don't understand why it's not ceiling. Frustrated a lot yeah. The seals in place.
Why yeah like right here is the affected area. I just i don't understand okay so i've been here tinkering with this sunroof kind of running it back and forth. And i'm watching it as it parks and when we get to the park position. I can see that this area of the seal is a little bit more compressed than the rest of it and if i look over here. I see kind of a gap. It's it's just not it's not sitting as flush as i think it could be against the body okay let me operate it you can see so yeah. It goes in the park that's its park position. But it just seems like there's more space right here than there should be and i can confirm that because this is squished a little bit well unfortunately.
I think i'm gonna have to pull the headliner down and see if something on this track in here is broken maybe. A rivet is broken off or the piece of plastic is broken something is causing this to not align. Properly and let's back it up again it seems to have a little bit of play i mean not much i don't know it has to be something in the track because we've already exhausted the limits of uh deductive reasoning. We know it's not the surface of the of the body.
We know it's not the seal. We know it's not the glass. It's got to be in the track this thing must not be aligning properly. I don't really see it.
But we can see it water's coming in all right back to the drawing board well guys it appears that a simple rubber seal replacement was a little bit too optimistic for this problem. I'm going to have to ponder what needs to happen next and then come up with a new plan. Unfortunately. That's gonna have to bring this particular video to conclusions as always i'd like to thank you for watching.

Nice try If you get electrical cable Puller which are basically fibreglass rods and rod each side of the pillar posts so the water gets away faster sometimes they get blocked up with leaves under window may want a slight adjustment on the running rails good luck with it 👍👍👍👍

Sunroofs / moonroofs are one of the dumbest inventions in automotive history. Nothing but problems down the line, for little to no actual practical utility. Need wind? Roll the window down, lol. (and yes, I've had them… never used them)
I've never had any issues with any Sunroofs on our GM's…..'06 Grand-Prix, 2014 Regal Turbo, '08 Impala LTZ , '15 Impala LTZ…..etc.
And this is in Fargo ND, where we can (& just DID!!) have -30F in this past winter……to 104F a couple weeks ago! Tends to be hard on things…..
I DO make sure to use a good Interior Detailing cleaner on the Door & Roof-seals, etc. This keeps everything looking better & performing quieter.
I know that many people love them, but I never could understand why anybody wants to cut a ginormous hole in their roof! Especially in a place where it is likely to rain every day or so. Same with a sky light! It is a leak waiting to happen. But You do You!

Ray, I just got rid of my 2008 Saturn Aura XE. It had a sunroof and somewhere it leaked real bad. The front floors were all ways soaked as well as the rear driver side. The trunk got some water in it too. Nobody would help me so I scrapped the car
Brings back memories of trying to fix my leaking sunroof. Replaced the gasket. It was bad but not the reason for the leak. Realigned the glass. Looked better but was not the reason. Checked both front and both rear drains. All free and clear. Leak persisted.
Found that ford(jaguar by default) uses double sided tape to keep the metal frame affixed to the glass. That failed and the metal frame was separated from the glass. Didn't notice until I actually removed the glass and then it was clear as day. Used urethane to affix the frame to the glass and no more leaks into the cabin.
In this case though I suspect it is the drains that are clogged so the amount getting by the "seal" is not draining away properly.
My wife wants the next car to have a moon roof. Our previous car has one and it's never leaked. It's also never been opened to enjoy the outside air. So what does she want it for other than to create a water leak potential. Plus that option is going to add 1.5k$ to the price of the car.
Was that concrete mixer strapped down at all? Surely that yellow strap wasn't all was it?

Maybe it's still leaking because you failed to clean it with break clean.
Is the a calibration for the sunroof? It seems to raise just a bit after seating. Might need to front/rear limits set.

Would seem to be either the channels or the mechanical movement levers. Are the levers adjustable?
I had a similar problem on a Mazda protégé when a twig got caught in the track. It was quite the time consuming task for the tech to get the glass panel properly aligned again.

When I ordered my 2015 Subaru Outback from the factory, there was no way to order it without the dang thing!
From what I understand, the rubber gasket is just to keep wind noise out of the cabin.
The water is channeled away via a channel that surrounds the sunroof and is evacuated via a drain tube.
If the tube gets clogged, water will overflow the channel, and enter the cabin.
I HATE sunroofs, and in 7 years, I've only opened mine 3 times… LOL!
Yes folks, Making sure the drains are clear is important – but drains have nothing to do with this car's water problem.

Great ideas on what to use for clearing and checking the 4 drain lines…fishing line or round weed wacker line would do it…I just hope the area at the sunroof frame where it attached to is part of it vs being a fitting the drain hose slides over…like vacuum hoses do on the engine stuff. A great video Ray…I woulda thought the seal would make it better but its worse…I wonder if the tugging fore and aft might have knocked it out of alignment. A great video as always Ray…I hope theres a part 2 to it as I have a 99 Toyota with one side off a tooth going up…still seals fine though fortunately.
Back when I was a trim tech at a Ford dealership, I learned that you NEVER buy a car with a sunroof.
I might be wrong, but I think all or most sunroofs are made by Golde, a German company. Prices for the glass, mechanism, and motor are through the roof! Yah, bad pun intended.
I would check the drains. It DOES seem like it's crooked (previous offset front end collision) but I would think it would stick/jam if something was broken.
It's British, that is the main problem.
There should be a thin rubber trim seal fitted to the sun roof whole on the body is missing .
My opinion on sunroofs/moonroofs is car roofs are not meant to have holes in them. Amen😎👍.

On Jags like most British cars, there are A pillar drains for the sunroof which get blocked very easily and will force water into the cabin area if not unblocked, a weak seal will allow this to happen more readily, I had to recently unblock the A pillar drains on my Reliant Robin which unusually has a standard lift up sunroof and it kept dropping water onto me. Once unblocked not had a drop since 😀
Yea, they all let water in. I work in a shop that deals only with automotive glass. When these problem vehicles comes in, we don't soak it with a hose… we don't want waterfalls inside. What we do is make sure we are parked on dry floor and pour a single glass of water into the drip tray, one side at a time, and watch for the water to exit the vehicle. If none gets on the floor we check in behind the pedals (or glovebox depending on side) and see if it made it that far. If the carpet is wet, we take the pillars off, peel the headliner down a bit and remove the hose and blow it out, or very commonly, just re-attach it. For the seals, we use a "rubber care stick" from wurth. It helps swell the rubber back up. Theres 4-6 screws holding the glass in place, there is often room for adjustment when it just doesn't seem to be lining up nice. Some manufacturers, like Toyota, have a one time use clip for re-attaching the pillar covers so be prepared before taking that step. Also be prepared to re-learn the one-touch button features, once the glass gets disturbed the vehicle becomes self-aware and refuses to co-operate with how the customer is used to operating the device.
Julio wishes to comment. Julio noticed that the four screws you undid went through the glass frame and the holes were square. Julio would like to share that this is how you adjust the alignment of the glass panel to get a good seal for the glass in the closed position. Julio Bonetaculer also wishes Ray the best and gets most enjoyment out of this channel. Bueno.
Vasoline the seal it will expand and put the moisture back in the rubber. I had a 1982 formula firebird with T bars and leaked like crazy added Vasoline to my seals and within a week all leaks stopped

As far as I remember , at least o American vehicles. they never fully seal. This is why they have drainage hoses on the front and rear right and left of the tray. Dunno about the EuroTrash.
Try some silicon spray grease on the rubber seal put plenty on & massage it in ( some vehicles you can no longer get seals anywhere I have tried for my Nissan pulsar/sentra 2002 ).
Yeah Eurotrash Vehicles always leak "They are just bathtubs" As per New Level Auto. I miss that channel.

Most JDM sunroofs even if the seals leak water will never enter the cabin. The sunroof tray opening is smaller than the sunroof thus any leakage falls on to the tray. The water either runs to the front or rear drain hoses connected to the trays. Most common problem is the drains are never cleaned thus get full of dirt/leaves etc. Water doesn't drain and starts overflowing into the cabin.

Put the sunroof in the tilt position and look for the accordion type skirts that expand and contract with the glass as it tilts up and down. Remove the skirts (inside covers) to expose the adjusting screws. You should see two per side. Loosen them slightly until you can move the glass forward and backward, and up and down. Adjust your forward/reverse position to get the glass centered in it's opening again. Then adjust the height of the rear of the glass in the closed position so that it sits flush with the roof-line. It usually takes a few shots to get it just right but you'll get it.

Jeep sunroof drains are bad too, the cheap tubing gets collapsed in the A pillar cover.
Ha, that ratchet strap trailer axle was sketchy AF. Notice that passenger side front axle tire was nearly or actually rubbing on the fender! If that tire blew out, gg….
But we never found out about the Home Depot buckets.
I had a 2010 Corolla, and I kept finding the carpet wet. But there was no sign of any water entry at the doors, or at the sunroof. No other wet areas.
Somehow water was getting to the carpet without coming in from above.
My first thought was condensate from the AC system, but the carpet at the firewall was dry. Even though on the floor it was sodden.
Turns out the sunroof drains had plugged in such a way that the water was running down the inside of the pillar and into the floor under the carpet.
I had to remove the seats and everything I could from the cabin and lay them out to dry.
When I did, I found about an inch of water in the cavities of the cabin floor!

You can spray that foamy glass cleaner on new rubber seals when installing them. Helps them slip into place and reduces the risk of ripping them when installing them.
can you make up a logo that says ( grease life to keep salt life afloat ) a mechanic with grease dripping from there tools. just a thought

Looks to me that the new seal was stretched tight around that back corner, making it smaller. In the front, there is too much (loose) seal. That happens when rubbing the seal into place with your thumb…it stretches. Evening-out the tension on the stretched seal may solve the problem…without tearing out the interior.

I had 2 Fords with moonroofs and they never leaked ever.
I never have understood the attraction to and the practicality of the sunroof/moonroof/convertible top when there are windows that can simply be rolled down.
British cars: my father used to say, "Never trust the English to make anything larger than a hat."
From working at Benz for years we had this issue too. the sunroof glass is never 100% water proof. it uses the drains as its primary way to divert the water. the drains are probably clogged causing it overflow. if you want to try and adjust the glass. when you put it in the tilt position there should be bolts holding it to the glass to the track. Crack them loose and you should be able to move the glass around.
fyi i stopped working on all sunroof glass here in tn kids borrow there parents car for the night having fun someone stands up thru the glass like a boss the driver hits the button never ending for sure around graduation time wild bucks and woman
Where I live the bugs pupate in the drain tubes clogging them so water floods the car. I hate sunroofs.
From my experience, NO sunroof fully seals to the roof. The seal cuts down on the wind noise, but it's not designed to hold out water. That's why there's channels on the frame of the sunroof to catch and direct the water to the drains. Which there are 4 drains, one at each corner (2 in the front, 2 in the rear). Any of them clogged up with debris will cause water to collect and spill over the drip rails in the frame and into the interior.
Looks like alignment if you ask me ray. Sunroofs are a pain. Just wish people would take the time like you and not seal them with whatever they can. Ps I just bookmarked your store for my future repairs. Your so fortunate to live in paradise and do what you love. Here in Indiana it sucks. And I've been tryin to get back down there but family stuff came up. Either way I hope to meet ya some day and good luck on your channel and future endeavors. There should be a way to adjust the window in the track because the front is getting squished and the back is leaking!
We install aftermarket moonroof and 99% of the time we get repairs it's due to clogged drain *edit, Tubes. Both factory and aftermarket.
Sunroofs are a stupid option
The roof is supposed to leak. And it drips into the catch tray which has drains in each corner, sometimes only the front two if it slopes forward a lot. The drain tubes get plugged with trash and the catch tray overflows. i.e., leak into the interior. This is why you can leave the roof open a little to vent heat and not get wet if it rains a little. Cancel that if it is blowing hard.
I have had numerous cars with T-Roofs and sunroofs.
As others have said, the seals are not meant to be water tight.
The seals help reduce and minimize wind noise and the amount of water that comes through, into the gutters.
The seals are actually supposed to let water through which then empties out of the drains at the two front corners and two rear corners.
Many times the drains get clogged up with debris from trees and so forth.
I would make sure all 4 drains are open.
Open the sunroof glass and place the garden hose in the gutter on low pressure to observe that the water is indeed draining through the drain tubes at all 4 corners of the gutters.
I'll bet one or more is clogged.

I had the same issue on my Passat, you didn't have to take the headliner out (unless something was broken) all you have to do is loosen the 4 (sometimes 2) bolts that hold the glass in, close the sunroof, and then with a suction cup on the outside manually move the glass until the seam is even all the way around, then tape the glass in place (glass to roof) and tighten the bolts. The glass buffets in the wind and the screws work loose over time. Maybe something else was wrong with this but most of the time a slight readjust is all that is needed. Also not sure why people are saying sunroofs are designed to leak because they're not. I've had 5 cars with a sun roof, non of them leak water or air. The drains are there so if the sunroof is in the vent position water wont make it's way onto the headliner, also water under pressure can break the seals (car wash) and the drains keep the interior dry, but under normal conditions the seal should.. seal. Also clogged drains don't cause water coming into the vehicle… ? If the drains are clogged you'll get water overflowing the gutters and onto the headliner, has nothing to do with water coming in in the first place.
Keeping the drains in that Sunroof clean is really important on Jaguars. I know that some of them like the XJ8 have a computer right under the windshield support. So if the Sunroof drain leaks, it will dump the water onto the computer and totally destroy it. They are pricey as well and control about the whole inside of the car, etc. Some of the Lincolns have the exact same setup.

The drain pipes are blocked with leaves/dirt, maybe.
If 1 side of the rubber was more difficult to get in than the other side cause it was a tighter gap…just means the sunroof isnt aligned right, which is either track or motor
In my experience on other Electrical mechanical devices could there be a front and a rear part of the seal? Personally I would never own a vehicle with a sunroof ever again since I was a teenager . They always leak
You should have an adjustment for the glass to move forward and back, obviously the glass is not properly aligned it has become out of alignment as far as the adjustment. You only need to loosen a couple of screws and slightly move the glass back. This adjustment is on just about every sunroof made.
When you install seals like this, you have a really easy opportunity to stretch the seal. On the curves, you should leave some slack in the seal. Meaning this; as you install the seal, if you are pushing it in one direction or another, you have the possibility of wither stretching or compressing the seal. Even though it fits around properly, some areas will be stretched while others compressed and "fat."
That front section that was highly compressed was due to all the stretch landing in one place. What you need to do is evenly install the seal all the way around but try to leave excess in the corners as they will want to stretch thin due to the curve.
