Funny the 1st time I saw that style lifter was on the 69 2.3 ford pinto bigger but similar design then the 2.2 dodge ohc has them for years and they tended to be very durable, soooo the modern engine suffers from lifter related issues . Is it the internal design, the material, the spring pressure?? Why do they fail so much???
I own an 03 pt turbo, and the T-belt snapped, luckily the valves weren't squished, did the repair, and 20 years later, with over 170K miles on it, still runs like a champ, and I drive it hard too
Dude that engine is varnished like crazy it probably seen 2 or 3 oil changes it’s whole life. Mine is clean as hell on the inside. No engine should look like that. If it does you know it wasn’t took care of.
Did I miss the part where he explained how the engine failed? The same way the owner of this car clearly missed all oil changes given the color of that head.
I think this video is worse than an engine. I hate these videos these people do a 1/2 a** job explaining what really happened. Shut the stupid channels down.
Judging by the amount of varnish in that engine, whoever owned that vehicle failed to to do regular oil changes, or they used cheap oils. Dirty engines don't last.
How did I know! One of those fragged itself while I was working on it. Couldn't find a junkyard replacement because all the cars were in the yard because of their engines. Finally found one that mounted transversely and swapped everything off the longitudinal engine to work. Worst. Engine. Ever.
My brother-in-law had a Journey with one of these engines. These NA 2.4L engines have a terrible power band. To do any kind of reasionalbe acceleration you're rifht up at redline. These things were made with torque as an after thought.
I've had great luck with these engines but boy do they need to be properly taken care of. I had a base model neon that ran all the way to 230k miles and it didn't care at all. I sold it 8 years ago and I still see it in town sometimes. The only issues I had was I blew a water pump and went through 2 alternators back to back due to an electrical issue.
But my friend had a red one nearly brand new in high school that he drove until it got rod knock. Instead of tearing it down and fixing it, he just said screw it and decided to stop maintaining it except for fluid changes. We took it to meets and races that we'd lose, power slide it in parking lots, he'd shift at like 4500rpm every single time. Amazingly he drove it that way for our whole senior year until it finally died. That poor little dodge. 😂
Buddy likes to work too much, just do a compression check. That will tell you which cylinder(s) are bad. It has to come apart to fix it anyway. The aluminum head(s) needs to be resurfaced every time. Edit- or do a proper leak down to find the specific leak area, you could be waiting a while to fill the engine or cooling system with smoke.
I drive a 2009 PT Cruiser with what I believe to be this engine. It broke the timing belt but did not bend the valves. So it's been put back together, and it's running just fine again. I've heard a lot of negative things about these cars and their engines and transmissions, But, so far, this car has actually been a pretty good one. And I AM NOT a Chrysler fan.
I haven’t heard anything bad about the 2.4L from Chrysler. A couple people I know got almost 300,000 miles out of that little 2.4. Gotta keep up on maintenance and it should last. My neons have the 2.0 and even after my white neon was ran low on oil by the previous owner it still keeps ticking. Literally ticking 😂 but 10,000 miles later and it still runs fine lol
Exactly how did the engine "destroy itself while turned off"????? We get a little education about valve spring retainers with DOHC cams and removed and then smoke… The title of the video blows smoke up our A$$ I'm pretty sure the title should be a representation of what's in the video. Obviously you have to watch the full video link pinned to the top to find out. As an ASE certified 40 year veteran diagnostic technician, I suspect the timing belt stripped at the crank during cranking. The good news is that this [or at least the 2000 Caravan version] is a non-interference version which means the pistons can't hit valves. If the cams are rotated independently the valves can collide with each other. The good news in that situation is the cams likely remained synchronized unless the stripped part of the belt made it to the exhaust cam and lost sync and bent valves.
That’s a lash adjuster not a lifter SOHC/DOHCnever has “lifters” furthermore if those lash adjuster get locked up in the open position you’ll either bend valves or breaker the rocker arms… that lash adjuster style from Chrysler/dodge was very faulty if you didn’t keep up on your maintenance
I've had nothing but good luck out of these mothers through the years I have a Shelby I've also had an omni to omni's with this motor and a bunch of the 2.2 l and they always ran good and they're pretty quick little I always had good luck out
You know Ive owned 2 Pt cruisers and my only major maintenance on either of them was the timing belt/water pump/ tensioner changes. As far as the engines, the first got destroyed by a drunk running into me at 260k miles. Second one had 357,000 on it when I sold it. That was 3 yrs ago and the kid still drives it every day
Not surprised TBH it is a Dodge/ Chrysler product can't expect any better from them they just keep getting worse and worse now their assembly line is in Mexico yet it's an "American car" 😂 junk!
The description is 100% clickbait but I should have known better than to believe a video that shows an engine failing in a way that is virtually unheard of and nearly impossible would actually show up on YT.
I have a 2013 2.4 and it has a timing chain,so not sure when it was changed to a chain from a belt but the engine itself is quite reliable and decent if properly taken care of,the only drawbacks are some external plastic parts..
I fixed a v6 chrysler head that was warped. I fixed by pressing it at 20 tons and heating to 180 deg C. I left over night and by the morning the warp was less than 0.2mm and the previously stuck camshaft rotated quite well. The cambelt was loose after skimming as it had been skimmed years earlier so "mods" had to be performed to make it tighter. Never thought it was salvageable but it was and still runs after 3 years. Absolute garbage.
Actually the 2.0 and 2.4 were great engines , it all comes down to maintenance and not missing them or going way over . I’ve had 2 and they were tough , only complaint I had was the 2.4 DOHC was way worse on fuel then the 2.0 DOHC ( the 2.0 SOHC were not as reliable) .
Honestly, those 2.4’s get a bad rap needlessly. Outside of it being a pita to do the timing belt, and the senseless crank position sensor installation, they are very stout engines. That’s the world engine used in a plethora of automobiles from Mitsubishi to Kia/Hyundai.
I'm just saying fast cars only serve to kill people for no benefit to society. Exist just purely for selfish reasons for egos and only cause damage to the world.

Ray say hello on your live please or at least respond to my question 👍
Valve collettes
Well thank goodness you explained the very basics of valvetrain components but did not tell us what happened to the engine in any way form or fashion
I own an 03 pt turbo, and the T-belt snapped, luckily the valves weren't squished, did the repair, and 20 years later, with over 170K miles on it, still runs like a champ, and I drive it hard too
dos this motor have 4 keepers a top and bottom have not seen a vale like this
what type motor this
2.4 Chrysler engine, probably the best four-cylinder
Ever made
Dude that engine is varnished like crazy it probably seen 2 or 3 oil changes it’s whole life. Mine is clean as hell on the inside. No engine should look like that. If it does you know it wasn’t took care of.
Did I miss the part where he explained how the engine failed? The same way the owner of this car clearly missed all oil changes given the color of that head.
Good song
Remind me again why BELTS are a good idea in an engine?
Timing chains, much stronger
Don’t know if it’s an illusion or something, but that oil looks like transmission fluid.
😢
They’re called Colletts
Chrysler engines were always trash as far back as i can remember. I think the only engine that was worth anything was the Dodge 318 V8.
it's a american car , what do u expect
What is that crap coating the inside of the engine? Looks like somebody dumped molasses in it. My educated hypothesis is that's what killed it.
I think this video is worse than an engine.
I hate these videos these people do a 1/2 a** job explaining what really happened.
Shut the stupid channels down.
You right, 2.5 better
3 of the Best engines ever built
1. Chevy Straight six
2. Ford Straight six
3. Dodge slant six
best easiest engine to work on period
Brick-airs. Junk engine from the get-go
Think they call those half circle things collets.
The keepers can come out
Judging by the amount of varnish in that engine, whoever owned that vehicle failed to to do regular oil changes, or they used cheap oils. Dirty engines don't last.
Chrysler is the worst. Do not buy anything made by this horrible automaker.
That's not a lifter. It's a hydraulic lash adjuster. Not the same.
They’re not supposed to come apart but it does in fact happen
2.2 subaru was designed to be turbo, but they built some non turbo and those literally burn up the 4th cylinder due to lack of turbo air flow
Nice explanation, but there are no keepers on the bottom of the spring. Only the top
I think you have been pumping a different kind of smoke.
Dont forget the 2.4 GM non turbo.
How did I know! One of those fragged itself while I was working on it. Couldn't find a junkyard replacement because all the cars were in the yard because of their engines. Finally found one that mounted transversely and swapped everything off the longitudinal engine to work. Worst. Engine. Ever.
Keepers “can’t” come out. This phrase is used loosely. They can come out, but you don’t WANT them to.
WHY IS ENGINE RED????🤔
What engine is this? Has the identical valve train to a barra
when smoke?
Was looking for destruction in line with the music but I guess u put the wrong track in this video
It's Garbage yeah, but the worst? GM 3.6, Ford 3.5, 3.7 and chrysler 2.7 have entered the chat.
Unalived itself? Idk, how dark that varnish inside there is shows poor maintenance intervals to me. But hey never know
Lifters on a dohc? 🤔
Wasn't that actually a Mitsubishi engine?
Best most reliable engine ever. I made 10,000 whp with one with just a chip and k@n
My brother-in-law had a Journey with one of these engines. These NA 2.4L engines have a terrible power band. To do any kind of reasionalbe acceleration you're rifht up at redline. These things were made with torque as an after thought.
That red color is an user installed option.
The things you have to do to keep you video from being taken down
Meanwhile some Isuzu 4 banger is probably out there running fine after decades of abuse through millions of miles😅
Man that thing prolly never saw an on time oil change.
Retard video made by a retard mechanic
I've had great luck with these engines but boy do they need to be properly taken care of. I had a base model neon that ran all the way to 230k miles and it didn't care at all. Why bother with a smoke machine ? Just use a leakdown tester it will tell you much faster
I disagree with you the 2.4 turbo is a dead, reliable engine with zero issues. It’s the non-turbo that is junk.
Buddy likes to work too much, just do a compression check. That will tell you which cylinder(s) are bad. It has to come apart to fix it anyway. The aluminum head(s) needs to be resurfaced every time.

The stupid background music doesn’t help, and also not explaining the title doesn’t help.

Srt4 motors are great
2.7 v-6 from Chrysler was probably worse than this one but I’m sure it’s terrible 😞

I don't see what the problem is.
Self destroyed??
Exactly how did the engine "destroy itself while turned off"?????

The valve retainer rotate and then locks?? But the engine is not destroyed if it keeps closed. It would be way more crazy if the valve locked open
I thought mechanics were dumb af?

they named it DODGE, THEY TRIED TO WARN YOU!
Worst description of a video ever…
Not one damn word on how this engine supposedly destroyed itself
Click bait. Never gets into whatever the issue is.
Useless garbage
Ho ho ho
Ummm, oil change much? I'm no commie I mean Chrysler fan but let's get to the ROOT of the problem.🤙🇺🇸🇷🇺🤘
It’s a Non interference motor
You said Chrysler. Problem #1
Chrysler are really good at unaliving themselves.
You know Ive owned 2 Pt cruisers and my only major maintenance on either of them was the timing belt/water pump/ tensioner changes. As far as the engines, the first got destroyed by a drunk running into me at 260k miles. Second one had 357,000 on it when I sold it.

bet it sounded ugly when it ran ⚠️😅💯
Not surprised TBH it is a Dodge/ Chrysler product can't expect any better from them they just keep getting worse and worse now their assembly line is in Mexico yet it's an "American car" 😂 junk!
THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME!
just rebuild the head or get a replacement its not that bad. 4cy head jobs aren't that bad!
Nomenclature! Those are followers and lash adjusters, not lifters and rockers. This isn’t a pushrod engine.
Lifter? Hmmm 🤔
Collets
The description is 100% clickbait but I should have known better than to believe a video that shows an engine failing in a way that is virtually unheard of and nearly impossible would actually show up on YT.
What do y’all knw about the 85 Dodge 600 SE 😮 please LEAVE COMMENTS tryin to get this car bck up an running
been running and building these with my dad since i was 8, phenomenal engines tbh
I have a 2013 2.4 and it has a timing chain,so not sure when it was changed to a chain from a belt but the engine itself is quite reliable and decent if properly taken care of,the only drawbacks are some external plastic parts..
I wouldn't say the Chrysler 2.4s are amazing engines but they're far from being the worst engine ever.
I would just get a cutoff wheel and cut them off.
Another motorman, how many days do we have to watch? I know I don't have to watch any of them but you're in my way
I think I have some leakage, can you help me out?
the 2.4 is nowhere near as bad as the 2.7. They are so bad that most shops wont work on them unless theyre replacing the whole longblock.
I fixed a v6 chrysler head that was warped. I fixed by pressing it at 20 tons and heating to 180 deg C. I left over night and by the morning the warp was less than 0.2mm and the previously stuck camshaft rotated quite well. Nuga what
Well, DUHHH. Ain't no camshaft in it so of course all the valves are closed – so what exactly made this engine dEstROy itself???
Actually the 2.0 and 2.4 were great engines , it all comes down to maintenance and not missing them or going way over . I’ve had 2 and they were tough , only complaint I had was the 2.4 DOHC was way worse on fuel then the 2.0 DOHC ( the 2.0 SOHC were not as reliable) .

I had a 2.4 in my Chrysler. I beat tf out of that thing and it just ate it
