Customer States: Engine barely runs and has a severe lack of power. It also has the occasional no start or long cranking before it starts. So far I've found vacuum leaks, clogged ports, antifreeze leaks from the water pump and the electric fan is damaged. I had the fuel pump, filter, spark plugs, ignition wires, and a distributor cap and rotor. It also has a new coolant temp sensor, O2 sensor, MAP, intake temp, IAC and throttle position sensor replaced. The ECM / PCM has been replaced too. See part one.

You guys have totally totally surpassed my expectations to uh to Rally the internet. So we've got our case here. the Sedana 35 or I think it's an AMC axle but uh, the reason we're doing that is we already spent a bunch of the customers money on this truck and I went to service the rear fluid and found that these side gears right here were absolutely annihilated. That thing is razor sharp.

There you go. Yeah it's super sharp. Uh, there was some pin bore wear on the case so I'm gonna go ahead and just replace this entire differential and uh, and like like I offered and since you guys uh demanded I'm going to upgrade this from an open diff to a locking differential um on my own dime I'm not going to charge the customer for that because we've already. We've already got a lot going on here with this and um and and you guys demanded it.

So I'm doing what uh what I promised I would do and we're gonna do that together now. remember the deal was if uh if that last video when I took this cover off got I think 12 000 likes I was going to rebuild that axle with the factory gears and then the Sweden part sweetened. Part of the deal was if that video got a a thousand subscribers I would put in a Yukon locker and it has gotten over 2 000 subscribers so far. And on top of that the video that I made that followed up on that got like 800 more subscribers.

So you you guys tripled. You nearly tripled the amount of uh of necessary subscribers and like buttons uh to get me to purchase a free 99 locking differential for Project G By the way, to answer some questions, no, that is not my Jeep uh no I'm not buying it I Don't believe it's for sale if it is for sale. I Call First Dibs I Know some of you other guys want it, but I've got a lot of sweat and Blood and Tears and love in this Jeep So if it ever does end up for sale, um, this is mine first and and that's just how it is. Sorry guys I Already called Dibs Now Some of you guys were mentioning in the comments that I should Swap this axle out with a Ford 8.8 inch.

Um, that's doable, but that's like expensive doable and that's more expensive than what I was kind of kind of willing to go with. You know I mean I plan on rebuilding the uh, the bearings on this and putting a new differential in there. but that's you know. like that's like a 900 job.

Uh, changing this to an eight eight that has been prepped to fit inside of a YJ Jeep costs like three thousand dollars because you've got to cut the hangers off and re-weld the exhaust. Hangers On weld the leaf spring, connector, shackle things on. There's there's more to it than just taking it out and putting it in from what I understand a lot of them. I Think you can do a direct swap with the Jeeps that have the coil springs on them, but this is a leaf spring sprung Jeep So uh, the 8A is a coil spring sprung axle.

So because of that, I I'm not able to uh to just direct bolt it in there. You got to cut things off and weld them on and do various other things like that. Hey, there's the bolts back in here. We know that bolts back in.
So anyway, that's the update on the Locking thing. locking differential on this. we met the quota. It's definitely going to get upgraded.

Let me know what you think about just upgrading this day into 35. Or if I'm really, really making a mistake. Um, either way, I'm going to do what I think I need to do So That being said, thank you guys for watching this update one more time. And most importantly, don't forget to have yourselves a great day! See you guys later! End of Jeep Update.

8.8 explorer is actually cheap, buy pearches and weld them on with the right pinion angle, the money comes with brake master replacement, you go from wheel cylinders to calipers, so the master has to go and be replaced.

Upgrading that Dana 35 with a locking differential will do just fine for the weight of that jeep I don't think the Ford 8.8 is needed especially for the cost @Rainman Ray's Repairs

8.8 from early explorer is leaf & a very popular upgrade

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Scott Koopmann says:

Ray, I've never seen you do a diff carrier r&r. I hope you realize that the new carrier will need to be shimed to the housing for correct carrier bearing pre-load AND shimed to the pinion gear for correct back lash. You WILL need marking compound.
Edit: You will also need a magnetic dial indicator.

I would look for a dana44 . Used in jeeps and Int Scout and also many others.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars East Coyote says:

Just upgrade the Dana 35 with lockers. Not necessary to change the whole axle. That would entail a great deal of fabrication. If this was your jeep and you had the resources and budget to do it then it would be a great project to do especially for youtube. But since it's not yours then just doing the upgrade will suffice. Your already doing a big favor for the customer by doing it for free out of your own pocket.

Ray, Ray, Ray…. Ford Explorer Guy here. 8.8's in Explorers are all leaf sprung except when they made it an IRS in 02 and up Explorers. I believe you are referring to the full sized 8.8 that ran in the F-150 and Expedtions which would have to be cut down; Explorer versions are within an inch widthwise of the D35. A junkyard 8.8 is around 200 and you can get them with limited slips factory. 91-94 are drum brakes and easily (EASILY) retrofitted to Jeeps CJ's. Been wrenching on Explorers for 14 years, I know of what I speak. Good on yah for getting that guy's ride going.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Big John says:

It needs a ring and pinion or at least the pinion bearings replaced after running all that metal in the oil thru them. Seems like the more you do the more they need. Never fails !!!! But definitely pinion bearings because that locker even limited slip will double the load on the pinion bearings when both axles are pulling .

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Diz Awn says:

All the guys saying 8.8 are right, but also wrong. If you are putting a new axle in it should be being sprung over at the same time…and he'll if you are changing an axle you kght as well get better gears for it too right? And if you are springing it over you need new steering. And, well.. it's lifted more with lockers and gears you better order some bigger tires for that 8.8.. so here ya are with a sprung over dual locked yj on 35s and highsteer…. You are gonna wreck that thing right quick so get some sliders on it and bumpers and damn while you're at it cage it… Might need an sye as well, and if you're in the tcase you might as well put gears in it.. wait, no that's dumb. Get an atlas 4 speed

And that's why you don't see em driving around, they are all half done in everyone's garage.

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James says:

Just stick with the housing that's in it Ray, sure the Ford hardware would offer it's advantages, but it's outweighed by the cost in time and effort. The customer is going to be absolutely wrapped with it either way, but like I said, cheaper, and it leaves you with more time you can spend buttoning up other minor annoyances on the Jeep.

Cheers for the update, and keep up the fantastic work!

There are leaf spring equipped Ford 8.8” axles (Ford Explorer) but i still agree that its still more modifications than simply rebuilding the existing axle.

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lloyd Rodriguez says:

I did the 8.8 in may garage with my simple tools, welded the spring perches myself. The 8.8 shafts have a much bigger diameter, have a larger variety of lower gears available if you ever want to get BIG tires and can come with disc brakes. Come on Ray! Just do it😀

But most importantly, have yourself a safe and wonderful day!

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Green says:

Since you gave us a quick view past the front flares, those are aftermarket TJ flares – the difference is the position of the side marker lights. Haven't figure out yet why it has spacers. If the tires are 235/75R15 or smaller the spacers can only be there to widen the stance. If the tires are wider than 235s, the spacer may be there to eliminate rubbing in tight turns.

Well Mr Ray I thought that jeep belong to you and this was the project for you but since this is just a repair for a customer I would not have done what I did. It was nice of you to front the cost for this but I was just under the impression because it's called a "project" and not a repair for a customer that it belong to you. Anyway you got your subscribers.

I have a 2010 XC90 Volvo for cheap if you want a subscriber giveaway. It was given to us and we put a new radiator, hoses, and lower catalytic converter. It has an check engine light for the exhaust catalytic converters and I don’t have the equipment to do those. Its a P0420 code. If you want a vehicle as a giveaway this thing runs like a champ but I cant replace the parts to make it legal.

  79. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Josh Smith says:

The 8.8 swap is to my understanding easy if its from a ford explorer, which comes with 3.73 LSD I believe, and also upgrades the rear brakes to disc. Now I say "easy" as someone who has never done it because of wonderful apartment living, but have a friend who did to his 95 YJ about 10 years ago.

That being said, it is probably overkill. What you're planning to do with it would still be a great option IMO.

  87. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 80’s Ford Guy says:

Hey ray what about the front axle, are you going to put a LSD in the front as well. 4WD with LSD front and rear is better than 4WD with open diff’s. 4WD with open diff’s might as well be 4X2 because, anytime 4WD is needed the wheels diagonal from each other spin still leaving you stuck. Got an 85 F250 XLT 4WD and that happens to me often when off-road, I can only assume that’s a universal problem with 4WD with open diff’s!

  88. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ronald Brosius says:

I would talk to customer first. See what they want to do. They will be surprised/ happy by you just replacing the carrier, and gears especially for no charge!

  94. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars scott lewis says:

The GOAL is to get Ray up to 500K subscribers by Christmas. Once again, we're doing GREAT over the past few weeks, now let's bump it up a notch. As I've said, tell ALL your friends and family to subscribe to this channel and ADDITIONALLY, tell them to tell ALL their friends and family to do it also. Let's show Ray some LOVE and get this goal accomplished! I absolutely, positively KNOW we can do it! ALL we have to do is TRY. So PLEASE, let's do it….and thank you in advance for this effort!
