In this video I swap out the creaking, snapping and crunching CV axles on the front of a customers 2009 Subaru Forester with over 300k on the odometer!

All right folks, got ourselves a classic 2009. Subaru It's a forest that's a big 25 single cam and it's got some creaking and crunching and snapping and banging while you're going down the road. uh front CV axles or junk? Uh, really makes a ton of Racket So I've got some new ones coming from that, not a sponsor. We're going to see if we can get these out.
She's kind of crusty. do both of them. The one on the left side's way worse than the one on the right side, but there's lots of noise coming from both. Give her the old mu kit here a Prett St Hang.
Get bail here. Fell we got it. Looks like a daily dirt road driver. 333,000 Mi on the Subaru Unheard of I Don't know how many engines and training it's been through, but at least a couple grabbed us.
a 32 mm. Oh yeah. First try. Oh, axle's even loose.
That's even better. We don't have to remove the cotter pin. Uh, because there isn't one. Well, you can see.
well, this might miles. She ain't no virgin folks. I Don't care what it tells you, but you can see where somebody wailed the piss out of this trying to get the um, you know this thing here. the ball joint out of there.
use your words. F Well, there was a cot at some point. looks like broke off in there for a while. Um, what we'll do is we'll get a wheel nut.
We'll thread it on there, see if we can whack on the end and break it loose these. Subarus Even when the arms aren't you know, rotted, it's really difficult to hammer out here because they are. Hollow these are just you know, stamped tin and they've got a sleeve going through the middle. so if you're beating on it out here like conventional methods would allow, it doesn't work well on Subaru Thought I Had some 12 mil fine threads around here, but I guess I don't So I threaded the castle nut on upside down just by hand till it's flush that way if we booger up the threads, we can at least pull it off.
it straighten. m Give her just a couple little tootes here. she didn't want to go that way. These things are pretty soft.
you got to be pretty careful. just keep whing on them. All right. Spin that back off.
Use another method here I Put the nut back on just in case we stick this little guy here. The problem is, the top of these control arms isn't flat. Of course this one's a little deformed. Oh I guess we did break it.
Loose Fella I got all too excited right? See how we make out on the other side? but that that was just loose wasn't it? Yeah, okay, she's loose. all right. Never mind. got all excited about nothing.
so air hammer it must have popped her loose. Let's get that uh Cotter key out of there. we'll just run a drill through. it.
looks like she's been broke off in there a while. Let's try to center punch it here a little bit. Sometimes that'll get them moving a little bit too there. That'll get us close enough.
looking good all the way through. There's probably still some more pieces that need to come out here. Yep, there we go. Think we got him all right? I Think that's good. Make sure guy. still happy. Yep, all right. just got to do the same thing on the other side now.
Oh I heard that, but we didn't booger up the threats. That's what's important. There we go. Come on baby.
All right. Woo, she is crusty boy. there's that one. Pop the other one out there behind and there's that one.
Now we have to go wait for the new ones to show up. We'll slip that out all the way. Well this is the end. Well this is the end.
So this this one was smoked. this one here, the boot was tore right off and she's pretty well out of grease and nice. And Rusty in there and has a quite a big catch spot in. it s kind of like a box of marbles, but not anymore.
All the way from the People's Republic of China into the Prny, we've got a new axle from Napper. We can get her lined up on there. Maybe we can just he ho it in. Yes sir, there's that one.
let's do the other one. SLP That little guy out the rest of the way smell the chinesium coming off of these things. The general rule on Subarus I do not use aftermarket CV axles because rarely do they work well. They usually cause torque vibrations.
However, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Um, the OEM CV axles for these things are very expensive, you know I think last I last set I sold there $400 and some dollars each. 4 to 500 bucks. Um, like I say we're going to exceed the value of this car if we do that.
So we're going to try these aftermarkets. This is the brand I've sold before with better than average success. It used to be before, uh, before all the you know aftermarket. Uh, New Aftermarket took over the aftermarket for lack of a better term.
you used to get remanufactured CV axles and with Subaru instead of getting new uh, you know new Aftermarket I would get reman aftermarket because typically it was a remman OEM axle which you know stopped all your issues from happening. But now that it's been so many years since you know these have been in the system, people that buy reman ones send these back in for a core and then you end up getting these back. you know, rebuilt so to speak and they're just as bad as you know. new.
I'm willing to bet that none of what I just said made any amount of sense, but it does. in my mind it does my my, that's all that matters I Guess easy F Oh baby, come on finger pinching mother Lord boy I guess long story short, as they say down state: if you can afford Oems get OEM if you can't go to the junkyard and get used rather than new if they're used OEM which are tell TI Sses are typically have green. the inner tulip is green in most cases and round instead of tulip shaped. So I guess that's all.
I can tell you that one looks good. Besides home carpentry porn, concrete, soldering, or any type of welding, the fourth most controversial topic on the Internet is how to bend a split pin. And do you call them split pins? or do you call them cotter pins? That's the next thing. Uh, being formerly trained with NASA I learned a lot putting together the Apollo 37 and on NASA We always used to use the reverse curly que with the full around. Okay, that's how you'll see that if any of you have ever worked on spaceships I how many of you were in the space program as I was and then you end it with just a straight out curly queue like that. The method you'll see online is similar to this one here. people just put them in Bend one underneath, trim it off, they trim that one and then give that a push up you want your wheels to fall off. Do it that way while you're pondering the curly Cube method.
Whether or not it's legit, it is because it's on the internet. Ponder This For a minute we spoke about solder in the US s. So. deer.
We call it solder. When we use our welder, we call it a welder. How come we don't call it a weter as you deliberate upon that thought? We Will Carry On by torquing our axle nuts. Both both of these nuts 162 pbet of torque on this little fella.
Look at that folks. Amazing. Of course she's Christmas tree. Also, seat belt doesn't work here so well.
you're going to have to deal with the Beeper Well, there you have it folks. putting the Uh CV axles in your Subaru. It's not overly difficult job. Uh, rust and corrosion adds an element of challenge to it.
but other than that, not much to do or not much to say about it. Rather so comment section folks questions, Comments concerns the nty the Facebook you guys know where to find us and just remember viewers. If I can do it, you can do it. Thanks for watching He.
Gotta love that pure 24K Chinesium. I had to replace the tranny pan on my wife's Matrix (some stoonad overtorqued the drain bolt and stripped it). I couldn't get an OEM one so I had to settled for a Dorman. The friggin thing is literally half the weight of the OEM one. I bought an OEM one and will replace it the next time it needs service (she puts 20K a year on it so it won't be long). But what a cheap piece of crap!
What I wanna know is, where can I get that tool you use to pull down the control arms? I'm tired of shoving a big pry bar in there.
Over 50yrs of pretending to fix cars, an I never used the curly cue method. How many people have died due to lack of knowledge. I'm ashamed of myself for not knowing the right way. Thank you Mr.O for showing me the error in my ways.
Looks like you're feeling better than the last video – which is good. Thanks for the videos Mr O. Stay safe out there. Oh, the one I'm always confused by – talking about solder – is that Americans appear to be able to pronounce soldier correctly – so I don't get what they have against the L in solder. Very odd.
I call them Kotter pins. Up your nose with a rubber hose!
wow. 330,000 miles makes me feel good about my 2010 forester with only 130,000kms (81,000 miles) on it . assuming that one went that far with the original engine and trans
I think curly Q means "CURLY QUEER".
Nice.
I think they should salt the roads more brought to you by your car dealer
Try the anti NASA method, better known as Redneck! Because only an amateur would use cotter pins (and curl them up). You should try using a bent NAIL, barbwire or a zip tie. Or if Cletus isn't using his bicycle to go watch the still, maybe take one of his spokes and try that. (LOL)
…"Split pin (pen)." Give me a break! That's what happens when you go BOWLING or when prisoners escape and run away. ๐
Nice high milage car .
and there you have it folks : doesnt matter how rusty or crappy your POS is Erick O still does a hell of a job!
I just finished at the NASA academy last year and I can verify – Major Tom is still teaching it the same way.
I thought the curlique was one of those secrets that Meemaw said never to share…
You and Mrs. O should do a live Q&A. That sounds fun. Make some superchat bucks.
hi from sunny scotland how often do you have to get a MOT test is like us yearly or every 2 years
Hey Eric do you ever get Mitsubishi Galants up there? I am looking at replacing rear wheel bearings on a 2012 Galant
Very odd to undo the balljoint there to drop the arm, it's normal to remove the pinch bolt on the hub above to drop it. And whoever butchered that arm, it needs replaced.
Curly cue seems bit fancy for me
Dang! Thatโs 3 videos in a row without olโ Eric using a โfire wrench!โ ๐ฅ ๐
Do de need to do an alignment afterwords?? From a Forester owner.
I know what you meant Eric. Used to be a remanufactured part was sometimes better than OEM, as they were updated when they were rebuilt. Those days are long gone. The influx of Chineseium parts changed that dynamic. Best to get OEM nowadays…even if they're $$$.
I can't do it.
๐๐๐ curly Q cotter pin method. You are killing me๐๐๐. I just drive a 16 penny nail through and wrap it around the nut.
cotter pins in US, split pins in the rest of the universe (afaik), where a cotter pin is the wedge type bolt used to keep pedals on old bikes amongst other things
Makes it look easy, there was enough dirt in that control arm to grow some taters
Knowing all the tricks and tios of a certain model sure does make it go quickly! Very nice work there MR. O! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
If you want your wheels to fall off, do your cotter pins that way. Well now I guess I'll be rethinking my methods everytime I do one. As always good show, and thanks for making me second guess myself. Lol
Shop I worked at last got $17.50/axle of which I got 50%. But the bosses daughter took them to be rebuilt. She would watch them and then tell me what they did. I had to send 2 axles back in 9yrs. So they did a fair job. This takes me way back. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
So what's to go wrong on those reman axles- during the process they change the CV joints on both ends, leaving nothing but the solid axle- how many have you seen where the axle breaks?
Where the snow ,
Many years ago I was lucky to have a CV rebuilder just down from me. He'd rebuild our OE axles the same day with OE parts. We never had an issue……. ahhhhh the good old days. We don't use cotter pins anymore. Our policy is we weld the nut to the threads that way we can tell if anyone has messed with our repair for warranty purposes.
The ole mule kick, LOL. I'll have to remember that. ๐
I did not know you were an astronaut. I thought you were just a space cadet.๐๐๐
I have to say…Being a shade tree parts changer for many years…I approve of your highly technical cotter pin termination method!
Who knew Eric worker for NASA (Not a sponsor)
The control arm was probably bent during one of the transmission swaps. Around here they average 120K
If the world ever needs someone to repair the engines on the Titanic, we are hiring you ๐ Because, no rust, no corrosion will stop you… EVER
When my boots develop a rip I just paint on that 'flex shield' stuff. Your good to go. Then on the pins I just use zip ties. They are much easier to get off and they dont rust.
Glad your feeling better, I also do a lot of suby axles here in north jersey, I have a real unusual issue with an 18 Colorado, wondering if I could pick your brain for a momentโฆthanks Andy
Eric, the way you secured your cotter pin is an acceptable practice if you chose to work on aircraft! Kudos ๐ and thanks for the video.
Happy new year ๐ 2024!!!
Yes!! I was the 10-thousandth like!! Now Iโll watch the video๐
Personally, I buy the extra long ones, chuck the ends up in the drill and braid 'em. Works like a charm.
Why did the axles pop out of the transmission so easy with the pry bar? I always have trouble on Subaruโs with these.
Thanks for all your videos!
Solder, it's like salmon – must be the "s".
I replaced two front cv shafts on a 2013 forester 2 months ago factory parts from dealer only 210.00 each. May cost more in New York I'm in Missouri. The poor women that owned the car had them replaced with aftermarket at another shop which caused a horrible vibration they refused to do anything about it. I told her basically what you said only fix is factory Subaru axles which absolutely fixed it.
Were those snow tires? Either way that body sure has seen a lot in it's life.
It's "sodder". There are thousands of words in the English language that do not sound like they are spelled, and solder is one of them. Let the English do what they will…
Iโve got an 09 with 155 on her. Hard day at work and with the gf, seeing this made my day
Why is inserting axels so satisfiying
Glad to hear you sounding better!
i did this same repair on my 08 Outback over the summer along with control arms and ball joints. i broke my Astro ball joint puller!
Nice work. Happy New Year
Good job Sir
Impressive PRNY Subaru!
What's the brand of axles you chose to use here?
The explanation about the life cycle of remanned axles seemed clear to me. You used to have a reasonable chance at getting a rebuilt OEM when buying a remanned unit, now the OEMs are pretty well spent and the current stock of available remans are mostly remanned remans?
I have changed a bunch of k frames and lower control arms due to rust outs.
Cotter pin cracked me up, down here in Virginia they call them Carter keys. Don't ask me why. I moved here from Connecticut about 30 yrs ago and had to learn a whole new language. LOL
Happy New Year to you and Mrs. O and family
I wire brush and lube the inner wheel where it goes on car so they dont stick on there like that good job mr O!
Ahhhhhhhh, some witty chit chat from Mr. O combined with some valuable knowledge. The world may be crapping itself into oblivion but I have found some peace and serenity. Thank you Eric.
Thanks now I know why I have vibrating after replacing mine
it made total sense to me.
I could not live with that , seat belt reminder chime. Fix the seat belt. lol.
Glad you're feeling better Mr. O. Another reason to blow that pop stand. I used to get sick twice a year when I lived in NY like clockwork. I rarely get sick anymore.
iNTERPRETER: Remanufactured Chinese axles remanufacured again are a Tech's dilemma-should I or shouldn't you? Huh? Like Eric says, sooner or later that customer will be back, but it'll more likely be sooner
The price is right but the parts are a fright
Love your sense of humor… thanks for the entertainment!!!
A couple more not as they are spelled.
Balk in baseball is pronunced "baak".
Salmon – the fish – is Saamon… go figure
Hey Eric love the mule kick removal on the left front wheel LOL๐๐จ๐ฆ
Nice work Eric โฆ..
the70s and 80s Subaru engines seemed good for 300 to 500 thousand miles as long as you changed oil and timing belts on schedule. I don't know how the newer ones are but there are more of them around town every month. Catching up with the Hondas, Toyotas and Kias (all of which are more numerous than Fords, Gms or Chryslers) Audis and Mercedes and BMWs are popular here also.
Have a 2010 Outback in Australia 330000 kilometres, pretty much original except for front brake pads, rears will need doing by 340000.
If the seat belt is broken, Subaru has lifttime unlimited mileage warranty on the seatbets
I was going ask you sure about putting aftermarketโs in a Subaru? I havenโt had any luck. Apparently neither have you but I understand your situation put them in and let them run it. I let customers know up from I can but success rate is slim to none and I just explain my labor policy at that point up front.
Are the Napa ones good or better to stick oem Subaru?
Iโve been watching you for so long and Iโve never laughed so hard hahahahaha. That was awesome
Iโve got a 07 Forester sitting in the driveway awaiting an engine. The original is trying to swap connecting rods. I hate changing Subaru axle shafts. It seems that if you donโt use OEM half the time the car ends up having a shimmy when turning. Havenโt ever been able to figure why only with Subaruโs.
How is that frame not Swiss cheese with all the miles on it?? Or maybe all the mud protected the frame from the salt
The mule kick on the tire
Well now ya do one of these!!! I had the shop do mine a month ago. If I woulda had your video I might have got it done myself. I am only at 230,000 KM on my 13 Forester here in Nova Scotia so good to know that I got.a few more miles to go in the ole SooB
I need that control arm tool. The S tool is hard by yourself
I got 358,000 out of my 2000 legacy original engine and transmission before the body rotted away. Eric, that ball joint looks shot why you drilling the cotter pin out? I've gotten so any time I do a front axle on one of my Subarus which is about every 2 years, I do the ball joint. The OEM is only $30.
Hope youโre feeling better
Kotter keys, as in Welcome back…..
You should be ufc fighter with that kick to that tire
This Subaru is a Sole Survivor. Most were Buried 5+ years ago in the New York Salt Belt Cemetery. ๐
"If I can do it, you can do it." Reality: Eric does it in a couple of hours including waiting for the parts. It would take me a whole day, maybe two, AFTER I already have the parts in hand.
Soon to be Peoples Republic of Americaโฆwhere the good communism exists.
Loved the NASA reference. I took up space in school too! ๐คก
You gots good hands brotherman~!
Considering the condition & use, that thing came apart pretty easily. Of course there was a lot of experience at work there! You make it look easy. Probably would have been a two day job in my home shop!
The passenger side boot is always busted because it's 1" from the catalytic converter's heat. I always replace the right side boot with silicone which can resist the heat.
Omg, the cotter key method. Lol.
Do I detect a bit of swagger back in ye olde step? Looks like all is right at SMA. Glad to see the best is back in action. Thank you for the videos
WRONG Mr. O., you're supposed to solder the castle nut on. Or you could weder it on.
