In this video I have a look at a Chevrolet G2500 6.0 liter van that was dropped off as a no start. A quick check for the basic leads us right to the problem. We learn a valuable lesson in voltage drop. -Enjoy!

My 95 gmc 2500 had way worse rust than this one this one looks pristine
I’m having similar issue recently installed a new motor 2000 s10 4.3 4wd
Plugged the harness back up. Pulled fuel relay and Attempted key to see if it would try and kick over but nothing happened. Switch is new so I know it’s that not it
So I grabbed my test light and noticed my crank fuse lights up when key is set to run position so I tapped into it for the time being
Ignition is working
Anyways while I fiddle with it more I found out that there is something else going on with it.
I get crank but no start it sounds like it attempts to start sometimes u can catch a glimpse of it running then dies instantly
I have a strong smell of fuel so I know it’s getting into the rail “haven’t checked pressure on rail yet”
Anyways
I replaced
ignition coil /wires/ spark plugs
Distributor “full drop in”
Neutral safety switch since I damaged mine….with those dreaded connectors
Still nothing
I’m out of ideas
Your very smart in what you do!!!
Great vid! Changed battery in 03 GMC 3500 cutaway. Now same symptom. Crank- No start. Do not have lift in driveway, what are chances of same gnd issue. No trailer hookup, comprable frame rust.
Only code is intermittent O2. Have heard bad fuel filter can cause false coding due to restrictive flow. Help? THX!
Eric's reaction to jank is what I'm here for
Every time you make sparks from wire arcing, you are actually helping to make ozone.. this has been scientifically proven.. sometimes I will take neutral wires off fluorescent lighting and arc them for a few minutes …making ozone.. making ozone.. you are welcome Al Gore.
Just Saved Us from a massive headache, Thanks!
I don’t know why more people don’t use the power probe. It comes in so handy.
This fixed my problem what a legend
Great video as always I’m chasing my tale with same no start issue 07 gmc 1500 5.3
hoping it’s a ground and not the fpcm but I don’t have a power probe just a volt meter, and a test light some marine grade 4g cable and some chewing gum lol jk
My truck is a pile of rust as well so
I will look around for a broken ground strap but any other advice Unfortunately I don’t have a lift and my bed is filled with tools or try to slide around under it
Good job
I have a chevy silverado 2500 6.0 I've replaced the pcm a battery a starter and a fuel pump and it will not start I don't know what it is and I need help.
HEY! spent the past 12 hours working on my chevy I randomly came across this video (been to channel before however) this ended up being my exact problem, I replaced the fuel pump which I sorta needed to anyway thinking that might of been it butit was the frayed ground wire to the frame it just disintegrated in my hand when i inspected it, went and got a new one and viola. Thanks!
Thanks for the great lesson. You are a real problem solving Mechanic who uses technology, theory & solutions.
This video saved me a ton of time and frustration. I had just finished cutting off my running boards and my van stopped running. Sure enough, the running board was completing the ground from the body to the frame. The ground strap rotted in two. I was searching around for tips on dropping the tank to replace the fuel pump when I found this video. Thank you Eric!
you done good. i am so happy to live in Alabama we do have mud but the rust you have to deal with is just to much. but like someone said tough job but someone has to do it
We have a fleet of Savana 3500's and after about 5 years that ground wire will turn to dust when touched, leaving the driver stranded because fuel pump will not run. Temporary fix with a wire and 2 clips and we can at least drive the van back for repairs. Bad design by GMC, should be a wrapped ground wire like you put on right from the factory.
"Son, that there is a mill bastard, not a rat tailed one!"
You made my life….thank you so very much appreciated thank you appreciated thank you
How long do you need it? A long time, I’m putting it on a car.
Don't really have to worry about that here in NC
That car is rusted
Rock On Sir Thank You for keeping us all GROUNDED
Y.I.B. M.R. Ground Drops.
did he say brake cleaner to get it in here…..in the air intake??
What is the probe you used
Who thinks this went directly to Craig’s list ….. since it now running
My 05 Tahoe has surface rust on the frame and I’m acting like a big baby about it, using Kurd Cutter rust converter to get the frame back to bare metal. After seeing this frame I am thinking that maybe I’m being a little dramatic.
You could have gotten "that guy" to help you push the van in.
Do you like your Vampliers?
My power probe makes a static sound if it dosen't detect a good ground, at least I think. Good job! I could see a lesser shop changing fuel pumps and throwing other parts at it and that would snow ball into other parts with all that rust!
Eric's attention to detail. "Finished appearance" going on a complete rust bucket!!
Do you ever work on a car that’s not a rusty mess? lol. Quite the challenge.
He said "rusty chevy" and I literally mumbled "ground problem".
skills
it amazes me people do nothing to their vehicles, drive them in the salty ny roads and wonder why they look like that. a gallon of fluid film and the gun goes along way to not have a rusted out piece of crap
Nicely done uncle had that issue with his ford pu only problem was he was trying to haul a trailer wired for an older chevy and his plug was wired all wrong from what the trailer Hadid wired the trailer to my dads 67 g10 sportvan and I wired the trailer like the van all lights and grounds were identicle Bob's 85 ford f150 4×4 was wired totally different he wanted to cut my wiring and redo it for his ford I said nothing doing I made him a ford to Chevrolet adapter so as to spare my wiring i spent 3 weeks doing with grounds
Cool diagnosis. I feel dumb. My 1996 Chevy WT1500 had a rustier frame than this one but the body panels and rockers were in good condition. Just had some rust on the underside of the door and the cab corners. The body on this beast did not look good. My ground strap looked the same but used just a 10 gauge piece of wire being too cheap to buy a battery cable. That was some quality work in the video and the new strap will outlast the truck by 15 years.
Dude! You are a great mechanic! 😀
Man I dont know how you have the patients to deal with those crimp type terminals. I throw those in the trash. I go to a local "specialty automotive electric shop" in my area and get heavy lead type solder on terminals that you could run over in that van and they would be fine. I dont ever crimp, I use a thick roll of "Rosin Core Solder" solder them on and heat shrink. Which in my opinion is the best and strongest electrical connection that you can have. Have a nice day!
– Joe from Pittsburgh PA
thank you for the info < sometimes a person needs a little update! thanks again>
Eric, I need help! My van keeps dying and won’t start
I have a 2007 London Taxi TX4 in Glasgow, Scotland. We too have rust problems. I wash it underneath three times a year to get rid of the salt. Do you think thats a good idea?? Ally
One more winter and the van will turn to dust
No one heard of Tectyl undercoating in america?
I thought that a Rust Bucket like that would not pass State Inspection?
Love the videos, just recently found you on YouTube. Keep making them awesome videos!👌🏽👏🏽
you are the best,Eric
I finally figured out why I find your videos so relaxing. You’re the automotive equivalent of Bob Ross.
