thank god i live in al so when i work on my daughter rural mail jeeps i dont have the rust issues that i see you fighting with all the time,,,actually just had her patriot over with the abs 4 wheel drive light and esp lights on , ended up being the speed sensor had grease buildup on it, cleaned it off and worked right away whoo hoo,,she just had a cv axle put in on that side last week her reg mech charged her 165 for the axel and labor,would have done it for her nut it was cold and also so many different cv axle for her patriot they had to reorder it several times before getting it right

They do have a cage. It was part of the dust you cleaned out around the nut.

Eric you should consider getting a cheap plasma cutter instead of using oxy/acet. I bought a lotos plasma cutter from amazon under $200 and I have not purchased gas since. I have saved so much money and the cutter runs 110 volt, 60 psi, and is very small for storage.
You diag is spot on and the methods employed worked and worked well any issues are their own I'm fine with it however I've been told before to reuse the CV shaft in that shape I said nope you sign off on it and I will but other wise you get new.

My boss G/F has a 2014 Compass and that thing with the small 4cyl motor sounds as if it’s going to explode !!! Drinks oil like a Toyota Camry 2.5l. Nice ride on the compass for the most part.
