In a previous video https://youtu.be/MVyPmI3vQw0 we had a look at a Subaru that did not want to give up its keys after being put into park. I now have the part to fix so let's yank out the shifter and get this car back on the road. -Enjoy!

This is great. I started watching because I have this problem, but I stayed because it was so entertaining. This feels like the way my buddies and I would trash talk our way through driveway auto repairs. Laughed out loud a couple of times. Your video taught me two things. 1-Everything that needs to be done to perform this fix, and 2-There is no way I am going to try this fix myself. I tend to slash and burn my way through a repair, applying layers of rig job recoveries toward the end. I'll leave this job, and its frustrations, to the pros. Thanks for a great video!
Great Thank you
Cindy will be very happy also LOL
what is the name of the part that you changed and how can I ask for it?
awesome video, thanks….
One of your best videos.. humourwise! ๐๐๐
Thanks for the preview. I have to do this today .
Your pain is my gain
Suburu has always created torture devices for mechanics
Is there a source that we can view to learn how to disconnect and reconnect the shift cable? It was nicely displayed in the video, but I would like a manual guide if possible.
Hi, Iโm from down under in AUS and have the same problem. My local dealer quoted less than $450.00 to do the same job, including parts., I was considering to do it myself but after seeing you do the job I will book it in and save myself a lot trouble.
Love your vision, clear vision of the job, great work…
Great video very informative. Thank u.
Yet another reason that automatic transmissions should be illegal.
Now what lesson did we learn. Oh yeah, never ever buy a Subaru. Because first of all whatever breaks you will wait 2 weeks for the parts. Then you will have to go around your backside to install it.
There's your problem lady the oatmeal creme pie filling JR jammed down in this thing.
Subaru should send you a check every month for working on their JUNK. I have dealt with them enough, never ever buy one.
Iโm not mechanically inclined. Whatโs a fair price for this job? Can any mechanic do it or do I have to go to a Subaru dealership?
Hoping I dont need to do this job. Lol
Awesome Job! I will be fixing my car this week because I now think I can do it! Thankfully I have a shop to use, I Teach Auto Body, I am just not happy about how much work it is!
We love watching your videos. Even though we do not work on engines like you do, we always learn something interesting. Plus , you are very entertaining with your comments.
Knob polisher!๐
Interesting trip into the bowels of a Subaru. Looks like it's a tough problem to fix. A good mechanic like you can do it, but not an average Subaru owner like me. No quick fix, right? So I am at the mercy of the dealer. Ouch.
What did you charge labor for this job?
Ah the memories in the back seat, and then we find the hole, oh dear!
Eric, you certainly have a photographic memory to reassemble
Yeah, I thought about repairing this myself, but this just looks like a pain in the ass.
Thanks for putting this out. My wife's '16 X-trek just started having the symptoms – based on watching this vid, I've decided that even though I'm a pretty competent home mechanic, I'll let someone that's done these before take care of this one.
that must have been a MASSIVE job, Can I ask what the cost of the Repair was? It looks like a Several Hundred DollarJob (forget about Booktime)
If you are having this problem, please file a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236. That way, they may do a recall. Why the f@#% is this not a recall?????
Should probably hide the customer's name better…
Kriss Kross wow, how old are you?
Youd have to be a wee little fella to be racing submarines in that back seat
Hmm hammer pants yeah you were quite a ways behind me in school we had greaser week blue Jean's and white tee shirts and wife beater shirts aka tanker tops
This is so impressive! I'm too sure about the US, but here in the UK you'd never find an independent shop that would take on a job as specialized as this; it would have to be dealership all the way… and it would cost you a fortune. Eric is just so chilled – he's not fazed by anything.
Love it! Thanks Eric!
What came first chicken or the egg the rooster

Not to be the devil's advocate, but it seems that changing the whole shifter assembly instead of just the switch box would be a better deal. I'm sure it's cheaper this way, but think of the time involved and the possibility of breaking something to the point of having to change out the whole thing anyway.
You bet David Stacey is fake! Is he still on tv somewhere, oh brother. Great job Mr. O. I really admire your patient's!
WTF !!
THATS A HELL OF A LOT OF TEAR DOWN FOR A FREAKING MICRO SWITCH
Joe Navy veteran ๐บ๐ธ๐บ๐ธ
Noobie question here..does it matter if there are 2 same color wire on a socket to which one is which..or it doesnt matter if we slot back in either socket hole?..in general?
Thanks for your video, it was very helpful.
Thereโs a TSB for this in all autos of similar years put that silver ring back on the shifter handle as soon as you take it off and youโll never lose that mother lover of a clip just install as one piece put the car in neutral when removing and installing the shift cable itโs easier to reach and if you look on the trans position switch there is a hole on the switch and the trans that you can put a drill bit in to line up neutral in case you move that inner adjustment nut these things have a high failure rate and in legacy outbacks they donโt offer the plate guide by itself itโs the full shifter but those seem less prone to breaking
How much is too much coffee?
what do you mean santa not real, love the content, thanks
Anyone know what the part for this is on a 2008 Outback?
You've got to be a riot to work with/for!!!
Eric you need to be careful with your phone as I suggest that you change your pass code as I seen the code and if I did so did everyone else lol
Thank you for posting the ONLY video I have found on YouTube on how to change out that switch!! The wife's Crosstrek has been trying to hold her key for months and I have had the part with no idea how to get it swapped out. Thanks to your video I swapped out that assembly and no more stuck key. THANK YOU!!
Should probably make sure your customers work pass isn't showing her full name on your channel.. just for her privacy, you know? I'm sure Cindy is a lovely lady, we want her left alone.
Wait Santa Claus ain't real now I know why I didn't get that bike
It said how much they charge for vehicles nowadays and how much plastic they put on them it makes me mad
