Thanks for the video well done 👏 I am planning on changing the outer boot on my 2006 Volvo XC90 and this video is a great help .

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dennis Harvey says:

I think the useful part of this video is not really stated: you don't just replace the boot. Eric strips it down completely, cleans it, and re-assembles it, showing all the pitfalls and the special tools required to do it properly.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Florencio Mendez says:

Great video really liked the real time hands on and your perverseness.

Looks just like my honda cv axle. I learned something today, thankyou.

Keep the rubber boots from drying out by periodically spraying 303 Protectant .

    Well done🤗

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Oblati says:

Thanks that was very helpful. Have a question if you are able to assist. I am doing a Nissan Pathfinder and my inner tri bearing won’t come out easy like yours they stop at the end. There is no inner clip it looks like the. Housing has been crimped. Should I just try to tap and drift the housing past this sticking point.
    Thanks David

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alexander Cahoulan says:

    thank you…from an ocd viewer

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ray Morrison says:

I noticed on the 2nd boot you packed it with grease, is that because it doesn't slip like the other end. I'm using the same cv joints on a speed boat from the bell housing to the step up gearbox. The cage and ball end of the cv joint is at the gearbox end which is modified and has a flange on it to bolt to the coupling. The cv joint faces downwards because of the prop shaft angle so I reckon I'd be better of packing the boot anyway

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars brushie _jp says:

Question: I got an Audi with over 260k miles on it and want to make sure I never have to import new joints as much as possible. I was wondering if just repacking joints will help with increasing the life of a CV joint or if it won't increase the lifespan much. There is nothing wrong with them now, but I want to keep it that way.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Zsolt Kertész says:

For the OCD viewers, those 2 clamps are lined up 😀

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Med Tec67 says:

What's this all a boot? …….. had to do it

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tom Hudson says:

Always love your videos one of my first reboot jobs I had a set of highly used horse show nail removers they were highly worn, I used them to tighten clamps instead of buying snap on bandtigheners

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ben Ghazi says:

For a non mechanic like myself, I don't really understand why going the regular route when changing the CV boots is the right way forward.
Us "noobs" should go the split CV boot route. It's like 10% of the work, and there is a much lower chance of you destroying something/not getting it together.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Private Data says:

Great vid , this was a very common repair in the 80's , many per week

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Barnes says:

Eric: I enjoy your videos. The boot clamps appear similar to German "Oetiker" clamps. I order them from McMaster-Carr in Chicago. They supply a Knipex to set them.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Ridley says:

Are we not doing phrasing anymore? 😁

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Netherlands031 says:

Nice job, but why not use one of those universal CV shaft boots that's split, and which you then glue together? Then you can leave the whole CV shaft in the car.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Pflieger says:

Oticker clamps they be. That looks like a subaru shaft. Usually the Subaru inner boots suffer from high heat from the exhaust cooking the boot.

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Mawson says:

That's why i never replace the retaining clip they always seem to be too big to fit down in the groove, if i can i buy the stretch boots so i don't have to remove the CV Joint to fit the boot.
At one time some special person came up with a split boot but then supplied it with Super Glue instead of a rubber vulcanising glue so it flexed when the boot flexed where as the super glue just cracked and split the boot apart so they would only last about 20ft out the garage so they vanished out of the Autoparts Stores to be replaced by the stretch Boots and installation cone tool

I love new words, “ mother plumber” I did not say bad words un till I married my wife! She was nurse and was as foul as a pirate…

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stanley Tolle says:

I have found it is possible to tap off OE CV ends but not rebuilt axles. I put the axcle in a vice and use a lead hammer. Still can't seem no mater what to separate reman axles. I always dismantle the bearings and clean. Some times I put the race in backwards, if it is possible to ovoid clicking (If you notice the CV axle will click in forward turns. Reverse the race and it will click in backwards direction. Fine since backwards driving is not the norm.). Not doing this much these days since new or reman axles are so cheap.
