In this video I have a look at a 1999 Chevy Suburban 5.7 that quit on my customer driving down the road. I stick to my diagnostic thought process to get to the answer as quick as I can. -Enjoy!

I think I need a fuel pump for mine
Would that distributor cap have thrown a code??
Please help getting a crank no start sounds just like that ran out of gas put a whole lot of it back in. Fuel pump running. Gas comes out but doesn't just spray out with a lot of pressure on my valve under the hood
Where do you suppose them teeth went ?
May I ask i have a 1996 chevy suburban 5.7 k 1500. Starts and runs like new unless its summer time. Turn it off to run in the store and come out and it won't start until the next morning, fires right up then! The fuel pressure is perfect and it has a new distributor, plugs, wires, coolent temp sensor none of wich fixed this issue. NO check engine lights on! In the winter months this problem goes away. Thanks for the advice!?👍👍
Thank you thank you this was very helpful
How much metal shaving are in the bottom of the old pan you don't need that in the engine
Hell yeah bro learning off you like no other appreciate the the knowledge I for sure will be a follower
Now you have a small block chevy oil pump driver, cut the head off from the bad distro and shave it down to fit in your drill chuck and GTG. I have had one from a Vette for many years.
TOAD IN….
So you shouldn't be able to move the distributor rotor at all? My 4.3 S10 died on the highway, and the spark is definitely not firing consistently. But it's only about 1/4" to 1/2" of movement.
Watching your hood laces dangle near the serp belts made me clench.
Best mechanic is Eric
I just put a crate motor in my 1998 Silverado 350 and when I hit my key no crank but I can cross starter over it will run. Someone please help!!!
Okay guys need help my 5.7 cut off while running just stoped burnt up starter trying to restart wouldn't I disconnect#3 plug and starts right up while running I plug 3 back in and it cuts right back off will not restart I unplug again starts right up any ideas please
Had the same thing happen to a Pontiac in mid 80's. Dist bushing seized, distributor spun about 20 degrees out of time, then bushing let go. Engine would spin over, of course no start. Towed in to shop, mechanic claimed my camshaft was broken. I asked why the rotor still turned when engine cranked. Eventually figured out what happened, new distributor and I was on my way
Thank you so much Eric! The same exact thing happened on my truck when I was 700 miles away from my home while I was on a road trip. Because of your videos, I was able to replace distributor myself on the parking lot of a local repair shop (they were busy and let me work on my truck).
Maybe the distributors gear stripped because of how it was loose “not tightened down properly 🤔?!?
Great video! Didn't brag about yourself or say a bunch of bullshit. Second video great! My compliments!
You are a good example of what YouTubers should follow! Thanks for your video👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Got a 99 with 348k miles. This crank no start condition has been fixed twice in the last couple years with a new ignition control module. But today it didn't fix it. How can I tell the difference when one of the two is bad? Guess I'll wait til this big CA storm is done and pull the distributor, but I just don't know why the ICM has been the fix in the past if the distributor was the problem.
we dont car if it fires bad bro… AMERICA!!!!!!! you know your shit!!
take the gear the rest the way off and cut the cap seat edge off and presto oil pump primer
what's the firing order on a 357 1997 gmc?
Crank position sensor I think is the cheapest and most likely culprit if you get a crank no start or it stalls while driving and then starts up. $30 part, 30 minute job. Seems to have worked for me on my 2005. But maybe I'll get stuck today but it got me to the strip club and back last night so I think it's good.
Great attitude and awesome diagnostics!!! Thank you!!
May I ask? 1996 k1500 5.7 suburban starts fine when cold. Will not start when hot without starting fluid or priming? The starting fluid worked intermittently but sometimes does not as with priming! It does make a nasty knocking sound when using the starting fluid but then runs fine? Fuel pressure reads 56 running/61 pressure start. Leak down test was good! Holds pressure for a long time. I start it every morning with no problems. Shut it off and no start? Sometimes priming the ignition afew times works but not yesterday? Replaced engine coolent temp sensor, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Added fuel injection cleaner. I am leaning towards the cold start valve sticking and causing a flooding condition causing the knocking noise from high pressure because of to much fuel? And it starts in the morning or many hours later because the extra fuel had time to burn off? Idle air control valve sticking or cold start valve? Or the distributor modual I hear will do this? Any advice appreciated!🙏 My mechanic freind insist I need a new fuel pump but I'm not buying it because why would that only be a problem when hot? Makes no sense to me! I read that this truck has a rubber hose in the fuel tank that leaks causing this condition? BTW no codes at all! Thank you!🤙
I found a strong clue this morning! The fuel pressure is 56 psi running but after shutdown it increases to 61 and holds for a long time? Cold start valve sticking? Or return line correct? Anyone?🤙
My 97 chevy 3500 with 7.4 did the same thing going 75 on freeway, broke the teeth off..we could never find out why it did that..cam, oil all ok..new distributor..problem solved..maybe made in Mexico..Idk..
….Gonna need an oil change, cause his oil going to have lots of metal flakes…!
He he he. … There's your problem lady
Well atleast it wasn't the timming chain end of th motor which could have bent some valves. I had that happen to a Ford years ago and replaced the timing chain and started it up and it knocked for a good 1/2 hour till the valves got good and hot and seated them selves back down. the engine run good after that.
I appreciate your videos they are interesting. Great information not only that you have a professional attitude. Clean language and you do not throw Tools around when something happens. You stay focused and accomplish the job
I have a question I'm having the same probable the engine will not turn but I do have single light but no headlights what would be the problem.
Gotta luv a mechanic s lingo. 🤣 😂🤣LMAO. Don't mechanic s sound like doctor s or surgeon
I have a 1993 Chevy Cheyenne I put a 1988 GMC motor in it an i had it running ran good then all of a sudden i got in it wouldn't crank or start. Put a new starter an cylenod on it same problem so I replaced the ignition modulator on it same problem. So I replaced the destribor same problem then the battery an cables same problem. Can you give me some advice I'm at my wits end yes I'm a women I work on my own vehicles cause I cant afford to put her in the shop. An yes I've changed all the fuses I need advice bad plz help I got grandbabies to take care of an I need my truck. Thank you from Kentucky
Grab deez nuts lol
Freeze
Musta been crankin it for too long
It ain't what I said I made that clear on the bottom of the distributor soft
Nevada gear soft
I don't know I work for a dealership
General Motors 350 so bad about wearing a distributor gear off of that year
Chevrolet turbo 350 about to distributor gear wearing they'll do it
Oh that reminds me of an old ford that wouldn't crank over that was sitting at the Blue Beacon Truck wash in Knoxville TN. The guy couldn't get it cranked and I didn't have anything to test it so I went to the distributer cap and removed it. Had a ton of moisture under the cap. Took some paper towels and dried it out and the button as well, popped it back together and it fired right up.
I have done the same thing I’ve change everything fuel pump fuel filter fuel injectors fuel regulator sensor mass airflow sensor map sensor…. still nothing ….
my pressure is good I have a 1996 Chevy Caprice classic LT1 motor 5.7….
I’m changing the crank sensor next … PLEASE HELP 😔😔😔
The bushings also wear out on that style distributor. Then the rotor bangs in to the cap. Enjoyed the video!
So I replaced coil icm and dizzy had spark it started and I shut it off and tried to start again now no spark even been timed
“Plugs and a prayer” is hilarious.
you need that compressor outside in its own small building for more than 1 reason….
Did they fix the intake gasket
The dreaded P1345 on 5.7 vortex…the gear on distributor is sacrificial ( soft metal) as where the cam is made of a tool steel ( hardened metal)..
I love your channel I like how you explain what your doing when working on the vehicles
