In this video I run down the quick process of diagnosing a P0401 "insufficient EGR flow" on the Honda V-6. This is a super common problem and they even have a TSB on it. Remember, when you open the valve at an idle the engine will stall if the passages are clear. -Enjoy!!

I cleaned out egr port and replaced my injectors on my 99 honda odyssey 3.5l. Now it dosen't start. Cranks over but not fire. This was this morning, ran good before install. It runs really good given the year. New fuel pump in it. Had a leak after install but I fixed problem. Still no fire, cranks over. Stressed out, could be missing something I overlooked. Any knowledge since you work on a few odyssey. Thanks.

Well-I just got my SMA tee shirt I ordered th' other day – looks nice! First chance when weather gets better gonna put on my new SMA shirt and go out and see if I can now fix my car LOL! Actually – I'm gettin' ready to pull the V6 engine outta my 96 Rodeo-it has logged 476,000 miles – valve guide seals leaking oil into cylinders and other oil leaks have made me decide it's time to overhaul her. Was hoping to reach the 500,000 mile mark like my 85 Chevy truck did but, like the Rolling Stones said, you can't always get what you want. Love watchin' Eric fix th' cars…..he's darn good too! I'd bet he could fix the space shuttle if they'd let him LOL!

I'm glad we don't have annual inspections in FL, although I do see people running around with only one brakelight bulb left that works. There are too many shops that take advantage and always find some lucrative repair that needs to be done.

I live in upstate NY also. It is mind blowing how the new car bodies can look so good and the underneath is toast. Back in the 50's – 70's the body would rust out just as bad. How much can it really cost for the mfg's to put a decent undercoating on?
What are your thoughts on undercoating? is the "Z-B" a rip off for new cars? I know you showed another system that looked excellent. I can't remember what it was.
There are 3 main drive thru car washes up here (Rochester). I only use "Laser Wash" (no laser is actually used). It is totally touch-less but also has a high pressure hot water under carriage spray when you drive in. It runs as long as your car is over it so I creep over it. In the winter, I use it every time after driving on salt treated roads but I wait for the roads to dry out so I don't collect the salt again on the way home.
I have a 2013 Avalon. It will be 6 years old on 2/14. My service garages I use always comment on how clean the under-body is.
Q: So 6 years old and only 30K. Is it worth looking into under-coating? I will not use "Z-B". Not that it doesn't work but the initial cost and the pain in the butt for the annual servicing. You miss a service and your warranty is gone.
Just a comment – FYI legal, just looking for an opinion from you years of experiences.

Love your channel and your smarts. I wish you were closer but I do have a decent place to take my car for major jobs.
    Ya never know.

Would have been interesting to see a safety and emission inspection done. Since not all of us come from the states. :)๐Ÿ˜Ž

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SearchEast 2069 says:

Also get some steel and weld that baby back up. We did it to a couple trucks and they are better than new now, way stronger lmao. Don't tell the DOT tho they'll send their SWAT team to raid your place and tow the car to the crusher. I've seen it before…

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SearchEast 2069 says:

We should honestly get reimbursed here in the rustbelt for damage salt and brine does to our vehicles. This same car in California would be squeaky clean underneath and good for another number of years. Its not fair.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A Physics Professor says:

EGR … also known as how to kill an engine.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Wayne Walker says:

Common codes top to bottom good idea

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SATAMAN Schmidt says:

Best Video Ever. This car needs to have it's EGR passages cleaned but why bother as it will make it to the crusher in it's current state. The operation was a success but the patient died.Thank you God that I live in Arizona.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Allen Long says:

You mentioned this car has a bunch of things it will fail inspection for, personally i would like to see you run through an inspection on a car that's in bad shape so you can show us what the process is like and point out this, that, and the other. I think it'd make a good video.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Dirt says:

Great video. Thanks again. If you can do it, I can do it

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fixer 1 says:

slap a piece of 1/4 inch plate on top of that subframe. good as new! just kidding. ha salt sucks!

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Joe Lopez says:

I jumped right in and unclogged the intake , the funny thing is this car was supposedly well taken care of by the dealer. The struts hadn't been replaced, a rear tail light had not been replaced…..not even the cabin air filter possibly

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Teri and TL Stanbro says:

You guy in New York must have lot of money

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Teri and TL Stanbro says:

Why are they making engines sooo complicated???

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeff Falk says:

I just recently replaced the rearward engine subframe on a 2000 Acura TL. Similar chassis. Those subframes are 200$ shipped in like-new condition. Depending on the condition of the rest of the car and drivetrain, it would be worth it. Those J engines are good for 3-400k with proper service.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kelly Konoske says:

Amazing the amount of rust back there! My 96 Ford diesel is virtually rust free!

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Russ M says:

The EGR don't suck but the subframe blew.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 18wheelz says:

when you use wiring diagrams where do you access these?

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richie Smith says:

man i'm glad i dont live in the rust belt. if i did it would be near avoca!

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mysock351C says:

What would you quote for replacing that k-member? I assume more than the car is worth?

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mysock351C says:

All that rust reminds me of a used Toyota Solara I was looking at. Paint looked good except for one small rust spot on the bottom of the quarter panel. Look underneath and it was obvious why. Rust had finished off what was underneath, so now it was working its way up the sides.

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Abram Oconnor says:

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars James Pizzi says:

Is there much difference between that Bosch scanner and the otc evole. I know otc is made by bosch just wondering what different

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jess John says:

Christ the automotive industry has such a wasteful mentallity, i guarantee to fix that frame will cost a hell of alot less then some ppl pay for a new car, most of the underbody still looks good

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave's Channel says:

Done many of them over the years! Blocked egr ports that you have to drill out! Actually it's been awhile since the last one I did.

    Wow

  39. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rob Mut says:

The state of New York (or any rust belt state) should give consumers a tax break on vehicles since their useful life is so shortened. Maybe not so much in this particular case but many others that have appeared on this channel.

  40. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tommyj19751 says:

So I glad I don't live in a communist state like new York. Me… I just do an egr delete on my truck.

  41. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Sean Rebelo says:

Hey Eric O love the vids!! Gots a question for ya.. I've got an 02 Jag XJ8 I'm restoring dealing with a stubborn, persistent and extremely annoying PO455. Replaces the canister purge valve (under hood against firewall) & canister close valve(on charcoal canister) now on the occasion the damn purge valve sounds like a trumpet. Now I've gots the "check gas cap" message too! No fuel odor, no misfires nothing runs like normal just the CEL/po455 which my innova3160 will not erase and my buds snap on reader wont either! Any idea or advice? Thanks in advance!!

  42. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Phillip Kang says:

Time to invest in a new hat!

  43. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Roger Shoaf says:

I wonder if you took the car off the assembly line and had ot hot dip galvanized if that would be a popular option.

  44. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Clark says:

    Mr. O
I have an idea. You should have shirts made that say some of your common comments that you use on your videos. One might say "There's your problem lady!", one could say "It's dryer than a popcorn fart", etc…
Now when I am working on someone's car and I find the problem I actually say…"There's your problem lady!"

  45. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jeremy Proctor says:

i just did one of these last month ironically enough i found that a ford dipstick and 2+2 is a excellent cleaning tool

  46. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carlos Moreira says:

  47. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gary Martin says:

Glad I donโ€™t live there my ole 96 Corolla would be garbage ugh

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Orlando Drivers says:

Back when I worked at an Acura dealer our techs never installed the pipe either, they cleaned the intake, EGR, slapped new gaskets on and shipped it.
