In this video I tear down one of my favorite IR Thunder Guns 1/2" Impacts that I have had since the beginning of my career. The anvil has seen better times and needs replaced. Oddly enough Astro Tools saw this in one of my videos and kindly sent me a replacement for it. It's easy to see in the video I am no "Impact Expert," heck I even have to tear it apart when I am done to put the gaskets back in, in the right order. The good news is, the old gun gets to live to die another day. -Enjoy!

I've got my trusty ir 231 model a I got from my neighbor whos an ex fleet mechanic for the power company. Data plate is complete wiped out from him using the back of it as a hammer. I only know it's a 231 because he gave me the gun in the original box and had the receipt from sears from the early 80s. I'm a forklift technician so I use it a bunch for busting 15/16 carriage bolts and 1 1/4 wheel nuts. It's never been taken apart to my knowledge and I've only ever sprayed chain lube down the hole for some peace of mind. It recently went head to head with my coworkers 600 Mac impact and it but up a fair fight. We came to the conclusion that if my gun wasn't 40 years old it probably would of been just as powerful as he's 1400 something foot pound mac gun.

You forgot to throw a little oil on the cross bolt (direction change bolt/part/piece) to help free it's motion. Made a big difference when I did mine, don't shove grease in there, it'll find it's way in eventually but, some tool oil on either side while it's all apart will make you happy. ๐
The secret is to not remove the vane housing/motor in the first place. ๐ Just flush it with brake cleaner/solvent until it runs clear, spin it around, etc. until it's reasonably clean because, when you re-lube everything after disassembly and cleaning, you just shoot some grease in the back fitting with a mini grease gun, as that rear grease port's whole job is making sure that bearing gets greased, since you can't grease it from "the front" when you disassemble the tool for its routine maintenance (every 48hrs of run time), as you're doing here, sans beating the tool to death to remove a part that only comes out if that bearing goes bad, which only happens if you don't grease it regularly through that rear grease port. <deeeep, wheezy breath> ๐
The way that part comes out is with a special puller that reaches in, like a bearing puller, hooks under the vane housing and you pull straight out. There's a small slide hammer type tool for little jobs like that. Finding one is another matter. ๐
I used to fix tools and compressors for a living, it's definitely an un-sung profession. lol. Leave it to ASTRO and do something "fun, exciting and rewarding!" ๐

When you don't need to take it apart and it stops being fun, it's time to stop.
Nothing is more fun (to the mechanically minded) than disassembling something you know nothing about and having it work better when reassembled.

Use silicon based grease , not wheel grease. Petroleum based grease can (in special circumstances) cause ignition when mixed with oxygen under high pressure. We do not want an episode called exploding impact wrench.
I never heard ir saw grease being out inside a pneumatic impact gun.
I just use air tool oil in my Chicago Pnuematic and no problems for this occasional garage mechanic–after I bought a 20-gallon air tank. Air hog 15 CFM average 3.75 CFM. Do not bother with a Pnuematic tool on an eight gallon or less tank; you will spend more time waiting to build air than wirking on tiur project.

Hollow shaft shock is probably the way that they fill it with oil and charge it as most all the other ones they have it in the bottom tank is a little well dip wall hanging on there this probably weld it shut after they fill it

Rebuilt many of those! Worked for a company that used those impacts on their production plastic molding machines to pull the molds apart. 48 1โ bolts every 7 minutes! But that was 40 years ago, and they look the same! Great tool!

I never knew a impact uses a vane pump, just like a transmission pump. Interesting no wonder they wear out with plastic vanes…
I'm thinking with the anvil that bad, it may have wrecked the sockets… which will wreck the new anvil. Don't they say on the tool to oil daily?

great job for 1st time .i have one when i fist starter too overhaul couple years ago still working but i now bought a nitro cat i will not go back so much power & so light i'm a gm tech for 33 years
