I've spent 4 hours trying to get my ball joint out and you did it in less than 4 minutes, haha. I've going to try some of the ideas you used and see if I can get it to break free. I have a Mazda CX-9, looks like the same exact setup though.

You gave me some tips I'd not seen in other videos. Thank you. I don't know if you did it (I only watched your video to about 6 minutes), and not a tip I'd seen elsewhere, but I found that removing the upper strut > knuckle bolt & loosening the lower bolt made removing & re-installing the ball joint stud MUCH easier. It allowed me to match the angle of the stud to the arc of the swing — you'll know what I mean if you try it.

The TTX ball joints are junk in my opinion.. I bought them for my RAM 5500 6.7L diesel.. and installed them… The steering was awful.. and the axel seals kept blowing on me.. so I had enough after checking everything.. finally I remove them after a year.. and I bought the Mopar ones from the dealer.. turns out the TTX's were the WRONG size.. the ball joint seat circumference was 2.76". And the Mopar ones were 2.69" needles to say the Mopar ones went in really nice and I haven't had any issues after that… Just in case anyone else is going thru the same thing.

Word of advice for anyone Trying this North of Tennessee… and especially Canada… If you're trying to push the balljoint out of the trailing arm with a press kit. if it will not budge… Get the press tight as a drum, make sure it is centered, Then get an air chisel or hammer and drift… and wack the ever living fuck out of the base downwards from the top side, careful cause when it pops…. it pops xD

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars chevy6299 says:

I'm not the only one to use two pickle forks to get a ball joint off.

Holy S(*& t …. I just had a terrifying one hour of thinking I screwed the pooch on this control arm replacement. (figured there was more risk in getting that ball joint out). Some of this stuff you need both hands and a knee plus a pry bar. Also don't be putting too much pressure on the hub after you get the ball joint free cause the drive axle will not like it and next thing you know you are feeling the terror deep inside like what have I done. Somehow it popped back into place and I was jiggling it forever… all of a sudden with the right angle and pressure from my knee it just popped back into place. I seriously thought I was up a creek w no paddle. No lie I have adrenaline still.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kennethdante says:

interesting the neighborhood Firestone guys think those balljoints don't come out of these control arms

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars kennethdante says:

Awesome video!!! Very satisfying to watch. I don't have the tools…. I'm torn about having a shop do it. If I thought they'd do as good of job as you I would take it in. I have trust issues!

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ` says:

As of the time of this post. SKP ball joints on Rockauto are $6 plus ship. With nips. The Mevo TTX in the video? $25. Compare to the stores? Autozone's Duralast is $45. Napper has it for $57 with a cheapo for $34.

Control arms on these are relatively inexpensive. Try it on a Toyota and arms are about $188-$200 at Napper on some models.
Luckily the Yoda's are bolt-on's. Generally. No nipple. Leave that* one alone too.

Good day, You mention that this ios for a 2011 Ford Escape. I recently seen a similar video for a 2013 Ford Escape and It showed the MOOG part as the replacement ball joint, but I can't find that video anymore. Do you happen to know what Ball Joint I need for the lower control arms on a 2103 Ford Escape? Ford does not call out this part specifically, but rather as the whole control arm with ball joint. The Video I watched showed how to replace the Ball Joint rather than buying the complete control arm.
