In this video we have a look at a 2006 Jeep Commander 5.7 that came in with a dead misfire on cylinder 7 and a P1417 stored in the ECM. Turns ou sometimes you just need to boot the car! Or is that re-boot? -Enjoy!

Got same problem with an 05 running fantastic shut it down put fuel in started up running like crap all my components didn't go out all together something not right po300 code
That's why I love you brother you fully checked the car love your videos !
Seems to me the ECM would disable the injector to prevent dumping fuel into a dead cylinder ๐ค
Love this stuff, never apologize for using your experience and knowledge, doesnโt matter what other people thinkโฆ I find your content pretty amazing, I thought I was a pretty good home mechanic and learned rather quickly that Iโm not and learned vast amounts of information that Iโve not seen anywhere elseโฆ Iโm betting the majority of guys out there just throw parts at problems hoping theyโll go away, I appreciate the concept on knowing and proving the problem before replacing a part. I donโt work on cars for a living but I do work with other technology and this is how I approach things as well. Itโs not a waste of time and the more you do things this way the more efficient you become at itโฆ
I think you were triggered earlier by the fact the setting criteria didn't seem to add up, that along with your thorough diagnosis that there didnt actually seem to be any valve issues, sealed its fate. Great work Mr O.
Some days your the dog, some days your the hydrantโฆ. Done a great thorough analysis and viewers learned from it. And enjoyed it!
That ECU is normally the problem with these commanders. Had random misfires, etc and was worse on a hot day when the ECU was baking under the hood. Replaced it and no problems ever since. Dumb chrysler puts the engine computer in the hottest part of the engine compartment.
Absolutely no way to tell why the engine computer set this default. Has to be a reason. But it might run for months and then do it again. My brother has one of these engines and has always worked perfect. Real powerhouse when needed. Does not get great mileage.
I feel your pain. Same issue with my dakota
i have this exact problem with my 06 commander w/ 5.7 hemi….#7 has a supposed misfire but runs and sounds perfectly fine…decided to leave it alone
How would I go about doing a reset like you did on my vehicle without a scan tool? I am having the same exact issues.
I have the same truck misfiring number 8 pumping very thick oil smoke and found intake full of pieces of metal aluminum and steel not sure where to go next lifter ?
I have an 07 with 5.7 my lifter went out, ruined my cam. Grinded down one of the lobes, put new cam in.. But anyway, besides that it does this same deal as your video. I have a code scanner and reset that sucker runs like a charm u till the next time. Wtf. Life goes on
Jesus Christ man
In the future that code will trigger your memory to perform a reset before doing anything else. Great work ethic anyway. That's why I keep coming back to your channel. As an ex diagnostic technician I feel your pain. Great work Eric as always!
Sometimes simply unplugging and re plugging connections will reinstate communications. Sometimes the gremlins in the engine give up fighting you.
MAN Eric. Who would you recommend in the spfd Missouri area that can do what you do. I've got a surging hemi that no one can fix. No codes fyi. Driving me nuts. Has a weird mis/surge no matter the load .
Maybe you cleaned contact at the ECM when unplug and replug.
A parts changer would just replace the injector, coil, spark plug…Then think. You think first.
Is that shutting down cylinders crap back again? The Cadillac V8-6–4 was a disaster, right up there with the Oldsmobile diesel.
Sorry, but why can't you use the NOID Light to see if it's firing when you turn over the engine ?
Ctrl-Alt-Delete works alot of the time
And you wonder why you drink? Chasing rabbits, diagnostic information not worth a grain of salt, and you don't own a swiss watch to compare things too?? No wonder you talk to yourself. Give yourself a little credit that you still have your sanity.
If I canโt do it , youโre shit out of luck.
I don't see a follow up. So I Guess it held. One wonders if that massively filthy spark plug didn't set it off.
I smell the Ghost of Bill gates.. lol when in doubt just reboot. lol
Thanks first of all for the great videos Eric. I further my knowledge s bit with each of your videos I watch. I have a hemi 5.7 in my ram 1500 so anything on those you do I watch with great interest in case I need to use it down the toad. Take care and many thanks sgain.
"frickin red lock tabs" said by everyone who works on FCA. I have 3 of 'em
Maybe just reseating the ECM wiring was the fix
"I don't know if they make a physical noise.." hmm that's a thinker…
That's another reason why I don't put a lot of effort diagnosing also sometimes the customer doesn't even want to fix it
"They ask me why I drink" i feel you cool to see the different ways of diagnosing ppl do
From an electrical and programming point of view, unplugging numerous plugs and connection can actually fix the problem. Corrosion etc even minutely can affect current flow. But the computer doesnโt recognize itโs receiving a signal again and maintains its current programming loop. Computers due to a myriad of reasons including a minor programming bug can malfunction. Often just doing a full shutdown forced the computer to start back with fresh current info. It did the reboot looked around and saw everything was in specs. It had no idea of the possible bad connection. If you had done a full reset at the very beginning you would still have done the work trying to figure out why the problem disappears. Been seeing these mysterious electronic bugs crop up as far back as the late 60โs ( yea Iโm old). My dad during WWII called them gremlins, malfunctions with no obvious cause.
I am glad this customer didn't take his car to the dealer, they would have sold him a brand new valve train, when it fact it was just a wee little computer bug.
When you unplugged and plugged the connecters into the computer was the problem always wiggle test first and unhook the battery to clear memory and then start it right? one of the first lessons my instructor taught me and we all forget it
I've had two or three chevy trucks with the "reduced engine power" message that never came back after unplugging the ecu and scratching my head. Love it.
very informative video…..perhaps just a poor connection for the solenoid at the pcm……if we could go back and test amp draw with the scope before continuity test we would know……but you did a great job……
How do you diagnose an OBD1 car?
Looks like thereโs no coolant in the overflow, which means itโs probably low on coolant in the radiator. The engine control probably cut that cylinder to lower the engine temperature to prevent damage.
What that means is the owner is in college but yet doesnโt have even the slightest brilliance to check his coolant.
Q. What size engine is it?
A. A 5.7 Hemi
โ so thereโs your problemโ ๐
I have a jeep… its not like my Chevy coach {vortec 350} at all… complex ignition and tends to corrode more.. for fun I'm guessing when u futz whit the wires it fixed a bad connection … i've been having ignition code issues with my 2007 3.7 and am cleaning all the grounds tomorrow.
I am still looking for cylinder 7 on my V6 3.7L 06 Jeep liberty.
When I was in the Army, I went to school in 1968 for 40 weeks to learn how to troubleshoot and repair the target tracking, target ranging, missile tracking radars and the analog computer that computed the kill point and guided the missile for the Nike Hercules Missile System. Then I worked at a missile site in S. Korea. Several times I "fixed" a problem without knowing exactly what "fixed" it. I accepted it was fixed and moved on. The system used hundreds of vacuum tubes and there was always something to fix. Operators ran checks every 6 hours to make sure everything was working. If not, I went to work. That missile threw conventional and atomic warheads. Young and dumb with way too much responsibility!
Pulling the plugs first might have done the trick….
By activating the the solenoid off and on several times and physically plugging/unplugging; one of two things comes to mind, either the solenoid was sticking and thus you got it unstuck or a bad connection to which you did unplug and plug back in fixing the bad connection.
the mds on these is useless. my neighbor had one and it got 10 mpg city
Oh by the way I love your show I love your station you are a awesome mechanic technician and shop owner just wanted to let you know sir thank you for your videos
Cylinder management should go away. Far away. Useless.
Stay gold.
Eric, interesting problem not many see like this problem and thanks for an AWESOME video/ info u r sharing with us enjoyed every second of it thanks brother for what u do.
For what ever reason in the beginning of the video when the engine is misfiring the camera makes the engine sound awful (mechanical noise) TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THIS, it was not "knocking" or making any abnormal noises, despite how much better ON VIDEO it sounded after the repair. Just thought I would clear this up ๐ง๐จ๐ฉโ
