In a previous video: https://youtu.be/Pin9g7rHFPo I diagnosed a Dodge Neon that was towed in as a No Start, No Crank, No Communication. In a short time with some simple testing it was determined that the PCM was no good and need to be replaced. Now the used one is here so let's get it swapped out. -Enjoy!

A great video.
Nice job Mr O
good follow up
I have a 2005 dodge neon sxt with 81.000 miles & 1 owner. Took to replica business in Nashville Tennessee. They don't know what's wrong. Diagnostic and all. Will start in the morning. After 30 minutes or so will not restart. The next day, in the morning will start. "HELP".
Super
Tom
Another excellent video case study. I like the way you take time to explain what you're doing and why. The close-ups of the Scan Tool menus are helpful to techs trying to learn these types of repairs. Also, the extra information of where to get the information resources from OEMs ect are very helpful. Thanks for what you do!
Mine did the same thing, turned out to be the radio interfering with the bus
Another great video from South Main Auto. Eric sure makes it look easy. So I've rang the bell, but I'm not seeing to much bell ringing back this way. I hope all is well from the littlest O to the biggest O and that you have just been to busy to busy out a lot of videos. Thanks Eric. Take care! Stay healthy and well and remember, you and Mrs O command the ship, not the banks or the customers and viewers. See ya. Jpol.
Thanks for the "follow-up"
Just one more reason I hate vehicles made after 1990!
So it's not just*my* neon that rattles my teeth when idling!
For your electrical checks, you started with the asd relay. Why would you not start with the starter relay? The starter relay is the first part of the start sequence controlled by the pcm. The asd relay comes into play AFTER the engine is already running. Of course, it's possible for a faulty asd relay circuity to cause unexpected, unrelated problems.
thanks much
Eric, PLEASE clean the scanner screen. I lost the video two times trying to get the smudge off of my phone❗😏
You the man Eric O
eric if i buy a ecm without skim program and unplug my skim module before i hook up the ecm it will work without reprogram for keys just trying to avoid taking it to a dealer customer had battery swapped at part chain store and then it wouldnt crank no comm either ive got to dig in tomorrow morning just researching now
So if the used pcm has a different calibration let’s say JTEC controller. Then it would have to be reflashed to the correct calibration. Then follow the steps you are performing in the video? Thank u
Surely it would have been easier to change the points and condenser LOL !!!
Thanks for the video.
I’ve used the good ole DRB on 2002 to 2006 sprinters. We recently retired our last 2006, it had over 400k on the clock. The Mercedes in-line 5cyl diesels, were pretty reliable. Once you learned their quirks they aren’t bad to work on. Now the 2008 and newer models with the v6 and inline 4 are a complete steaming pile of donkey dung. Complicated to work on a And expensive.
My Tahoe always dies after a few hours , it has a new battery and started i was told the alternator was good now I'm thinking it's bad , or something worse ? . I can unplug the battery and sometimes it'll start and sometimes i have to hold the key when I turn it to start it can you help me or any advice or suggestions?! THANK YOU
I wish you worked on Hondoo's more, but wait they don't crap out like Neons do. 245 K on the 2003 Ody EX-L. No salt=No rust=No problem. 1 coil and a rack & pinion in 15 years. I would be on my 5th Neon by now. Shouldn't you be hunting something about now?
Hi Eric, if you have a DRBIII, why don't you use if for every pre-CAN Chrysler that comes in the shop? I have one and an Autel and would like to know when you use the factory scan tool and when you go for an aftermarket one. Like for your WJ project. When would you find something other than the DRBIII preferable?
Comment rung and bell commented….nice job saving the ole neon eric!
Thanks for the follow up! 👍👍
I'd be SOL on this one. No friends at Chrysler, and no locksmith license. Although I'm a Smith, they still won't let that fly for some reason … 😂
Finally got dad's boat up and running. Took her out on the local river / pond junction nearby. Successful repair! Of course, the minute I attempt launching the boat myself in 40° temps, balancing on the truck and trailer to keep feet dry, wife calls 4x in a row, followed by a text CALL ME NOW!! – that can't be good. Battery in the Grand Marquis took a dump because the alternator did first. Didn't know that at the time, and I cannot multitask and think at the same time, so I had her jumping the solenoid with pliers after SHE told me the starter was dead, lol – alot of good that's gonna do with 11.87v at the battery! Just wanted to confirm a dead starter. After we both got frustrated and hung up on each other, she got a jumpstart from someone at the shop parking lot, and made it home. Glad she figured it out without my help. Love that car – battery didn't even have enough voltage for the radio to work, but it kept the engine running! Try that on a modern car!
When she got home, I was still all fired up from trying to launch and reload the boat myself with river current and wind, and people in my way that came down the ramp to blaze up some doobage … so instead of just charging the battery, I took the thing out, which broke the hold down clamp's speed nut, & replaced it with a spare I had laying around here. After wasting 20 minutes making spacers for the rod so it would fit the spare battery's lower height, the rod snapped in half, thanks to the crap battery leaking acid all over it, and corroding it to half it's size. Then for some reason, the negative post on that spare battery was slightly smaller, and I couldn't tighten the clamp. Ended up shimming with tin foil, slamming the negative terminal on with a rubber mallet, bungeeing the battery down, and ordered a new alternator. 😬
I NEED A VACATION I think!! 😳
The Neon lives to die another day. LOL
Great stuff! TY.
Can you tell us what the lowest model Autel that can replace the DRB III?
I just had to replace the PCM in my 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan as it was throwing off two codes–P01696 and P01697. Both relate to the EPROM not recording mileage. The car actually drove fine but I could no longer put the repair off as I needed for the car to pass smog inspection here in California.
After doing basic power and ground checks on the PCM, I ordered a refurbished unit from AutoECMS out of Pennsylvania. They were recommended to me by the parts department at the local Dodge dealer. I provided the mileage and the VIN and it was a plug and play repair.
The unit was a bit pricey—$350 net after programming and core return—but so far, so good. And it finally passed the smog inspection after the completion of the drive cycle.
SMA videos were very helpful in the repair. It provided me with the confidence in calling the failure mode so my thanks to Eric. And as he says, the van lives to die another day.
A used Chrysler ecm that actually works??? Amazing
Yup still watching clear to the end for the awesome music! 👍
Another happy customer at the SOUTH MAIN AUTO.
Excellent job Eric!
Those Neons are crates. Even the Rover 25 seems like it was better made than these. lol
I miss the DRBIII. Ours started acting up and they don’t want to replace it…..being a Chrysler dealer it should be required and not optional. It was a sweet tool on the older models
Seems like a lot of bullshit for a bullshit car
Mr. O, did you call the dealer for that pin?
Oh gotcha👍🏻
Awesome job
Nintendo! LOL!!! Another excellent video, Dr. O! You make it look effortless. We don't see the countless hours you spent getting here. Kudos!
It's been many years since I was on the tools, so I am out of the loop on much. My question is, do you feel that the computers today are lasting longer than say 29 years ago? I remember a time when computers were tough to get due to them being on a search list. New were on back order and I actually knew people who had cars sitting in dealers lots waiting for one for ages.
SWEET VID 🚹 👍 👍
Ahh that familiar DRB wail. Love it.
Awesome eye opener for this DIYer. ty
It’s pretty rotten that you have to spend several hundred dollars on tools just to replace the PCM and your own car if you want to. Kind of ridiculous. Just goes with my believe the computers do not belong in bedded into new vehicles as much as they are. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Good job on the neon. Wondered what happened to this little car. Glad that you could show us the start to finish. This is the kind of thing that many DIY mechanics would be stumped by. Thanks for showing us how to troubleshoot this kind of an issue!
Wow, a Dodge Neon that’s actually still being used…!
Great to see the follow-up! This just reassures that PCM replacement was a good call! I can't wait to get into more programming and module play! Babysteps!
How did you obtain the PIN code?
Nothing better than making the call and then get it confirmed. Awesome as always
Great channel dude. Can you do an in depth class about how the main pcm talks to the security module on scottys whiteboard of advanced mechanics knowledge. Don't forget to ring that bell.
Because they have no moving parts, electronic control modules are generally one of the most reliable components of the vehicle.*
