You all know that I am not a Power Probe user much beyond the power and ground supply at the push of a button feature. However I have several Power Probes because heck, who doesn't like buying new tools!? I feel that a lot of folks who have the Power Probe only use that feature too. Let's take this time to explore ALL of the features and functions on the Power Probe IV and see if it can be a useful diagnostic tool. Be sure to leave your thoughts and comments in the comment box! -Enjoy!

I got the Powerprobe MAESTRO version which is never part of these reviews… what's up with that?
My cheapy tone generator from Home Depot is my favorite tool for chasing 'lectrical these days!!!
AWSOME CONTENT BROTHER!!!
This has to be the best explanation of how to use one of these…especially the PP4…I have the complete service kit w/PP3, i got from Letgo for $50, complete kit including the short tracker, numerous cables, clips, you name it, and he included a complete LoadPro as well, because it turned out to be a 1 job tool for the guy before me…I know this video is about 4 years old, but I saved it in my folder for future ref…this tool has paid for itself so many times over…one time i needed it to verify an AC blower motor was in fact bad, and when I hit the switch it just started smokin'….CONFIRMED….I was in Gulf Electric Motor in Palm Harbor Florida one time years ago, and they had a sign above the will call counter that said..""All motors come complete with factory installed smoke, if the smoke leaks out or escapes the motor housing, It is NOT warranted"……"Thank You Again !!!!!
Confusing video
Just found this …great explanation.
How does one know when a circuit has a full time ground vs full time power?
I have a jumper box, test light, multimeter, a switch and several homemade connectors for my bag of tricks.
I am getting the 4 kit. Great video.
Still all of my ignorance… there is mucho value
Great Tutorial. Thanks
After your recent misunderstanding when using the Feed test to check circuit resistance, I tested out my PPIV with a decade box while parallel current is flowing to see how good that resistance check is. I found that on the bench if you don't completely remove the device from an active circuit, the resistance check on the Feed test is at best, disappointingly unreliable (like any multimeter). The claim to the contrary in their manual is disproven. It does not calculate resistance in the whole circuit, and it only works if the resistance you're measuring is between the bat+ and the tip of the meter, AND there is another large resistance downstream. I still like the Feed test option for drop testing, if only because it displays both tip voltage and battery voltage on one screen, so you instantly know if the sag in voltage during drop testing is from a weak battery or from line resistance between the two. You could even pair that with a light bulb for quick and accurate drop testing. I don't think the tiny current the Feed test drives through the tip would significantly influence your numbers. With a device completely removed from the circuit and not powered, resistance checking is within 5% of my Fluke multimeter, not accurate.
Classic Eric-“ because that’s what people do in demo videos “
Good job!
to put it in simple way for duty cycle its time on divide total time on and off, 60hz or 16.67ms is total time on and off, 11ms is time on. 11ms/16.67ms=..68 or 68% cycle. How to calculate 16.67ms, 60hz is 60 cycle per sec(cps), total time on and off is 1/frequency, 1/60 sec per cycle or 16.68 sec per cycle. total time on and off is total time in one cycle or sec per cycle reciprocal of frequency, in science its period.
truth about red illuminate at 10ohms because its too low, try higher resistor like 1Kohm to megaohms just like your finger it has higher resistance then red led will not illuminate and also even green led. Green leds wants lower resistance to illuminate bec. its 0v terminal, only zero ohm to illuminate , if it illuminates its ground but if not then it has resistance so you can surely say its not ground and thats very good to spot true ground. But the difficult thing about red led is that it confuses as wether its direct 12v battery or not it will illuminate at lower 10 ohms , it should not unless its zero ohms. what we can do is to compare the battery voltage if its lower theres a resistance or load circuit and ignore the red led illuminate.Just like light tester it illuminates if theres resistance but at lower intensity but at full intensity its direct battery voltage
i like to have a safety cover in the switch that gives 12v just like the cover to fire missiles so that it cant mistakenly press it while working in tight space.
Thanks for such a detailed video reviewing on Power Probe 4. Btz, I found info about your video at ScannerDanner forum in one of the chats. I have ordered one to today on Amazon. Thank again Eric! Great stuff!
Thank you for showing us your PP.
HE”s gifted amazing mechanic diagnostics skills schematics wiring diagram.he knows things get it done. Thank you for everything for learning 👍🏼🤘💪🏼
I was thinking on getting a power probe some day? right now I just use my volt meter.
Very good video.
Iv seen them used to retract electric park brakes.. i dont have 1 but good if you dont have a fancy scan tool to do it
Do you like it or do you not like it which one is it buddy I use a Power Probe all the f**** time
Watching this video I have learned about this tool and learned more about duty cycles. This Chanel is my favorite out of all the ones like it. Great job! Been watching for 4 years!
Thank you so much for this video! I just bought a power probe 4 to try and figure out some problems with my boat. The only problem was I had no idea how to use the damn thing! Thanks for taking the time to really explain how to use this tool properly!
My faithful Kubota G1800 has a starter circuit fault somewhere. My power probe has become my default starting circuit
The hokee Pokey , lol
Just watched the entire video. Was going to buy the PP4. Now I'm going to wait for the 5 with the Eric O. upgrades. Eric, let me know if you don't get the royalty check!
Thanks for the video. You are very knowledgeable. I have one on order and already have an older power probe and snap-on 's version. They take a little getting used to and your info is above average.
Just bought the 4. Glad you could give a practucal demo that was understandable!
Could the peak to peak function be used as DVA (direct voltage adapter)? I made a DVA to test CDI ignitions on small engines. If I'm understanding the P_P function properly, this maybe does the same thing?
To much talk
According to the manual on page 6, in VDC mode the tone shouldn't be heard if you have more than 10 ohms on the positive side, yet your test demonstrate that even with 21 ohms the red led will illuminate and the tone will sound.
It looks to me like a tool that would do more to confuse than confirm a diagnosis. I thought it had a scope function too
They should be paying you. By the way in min max mode how quickly can it catch a break in a wire while doing a wiggle test on the wire. I have a snap on ect 900 and it misses a simulated break most times. The break needs to occur longer than about 0.8 -1.0 second before it will register on minimum mode
I would for sure shove a pen through that spkr to make it quieter.. shits are annoying..
I've watched about three or four videos recently on using a Power Probe and yours was by far the best. Great job, Eric! 🙂
With that open/short to ground fimder toy need to calibtate the reciever every time.
thx
Thank you Eric from Bidrio thank you it was funny let’s check our pps
It definitely does not work on 24VDC systems. I've attempted to use mine on two 24VDC trucks, and it went bezerk. Otherwise it works extremely well for me, I use it alot for circuit integrity tests (resistance), injectors, voltage drop across resistors, testing components, cleaning oil control solenoids…. etc.
wow Eric do u have resistor color band memorized I'm a dedicated electronics guy an cant do that lol
Quick question? Can you work on cars when your not stoned? Asking for a "friend"?
u could use it for a noid light, or u could jus throw a few inches of wire on it n set it on the windshield so u can see it lol :p
what is it about the power probe that u dont like Eric??
The last part of this video you mentioned you have other methods for finding broken wires, more efficient etc, I was wondering what method(s) that is? Do you have a video on that already? Thanks!
You got power probe 4 is because there is no power probe 5!
As a amateur car 'mechanic' having no scope this could come in very handy besides my multimeter.
Thanks for the thorough explanation Eric!
when you were doing the bonus stuff… when you were calculating the duty cycle.. were you taking the pulse width "on time" multiplying it by the frequency and then dividing it by 1000 to get the duty cycle % ? thanks for the great video and for the answer if you would… peace
