This is the first video in a multi part series on replacing a clutch in a 1994 Mazda Miata MX5. The book time on the job is about 5 hours. Everything seemed to be going fine until we had to remove the rear bolts from the PPF (power plant frame) Needless to say, a little heat, a lot of air hammering, a few prayers and a can of WD40 I got them out! -Enjoy!

You just need to loosen it enough so the ppf can rotate out of the way

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rowdy Flyer1903 says:

Actually no, the shifter is separately lubricated.

I learned to deal with rusty stuck bolts with M42 cobalt drill bits and taps.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Bentley says:

That was one hell of a bolt. I surprised that you didn't take a sledge hammer to the whole car. That's how I felt about it. Thought it would never come out. Kudos Mr O.

another great video….most of your videos are more suspenseful than an alfred hitchkock movie….will he get the bolt out? will the housing shatter? is the killer coming back to the bathroom window? will the whole building explode and go up in as ball of flame?

I love how they welded on that small ramp to keep from something sheering off the bolt…little detail that most manufacturers don't do ๐Ÿ™‚

There's a reason there are no Miatas' in Frozen Tundra, NY. Because no one who would buy one would live there. That was your first clue to move the hell out of there. Does Amazon even deliver there? Are cokes still a nickel? What industries left there b4 the ice age came? I bet the subframe on new cars start to rust on the showroom floor. God, what a hell hole

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lefty dog says:

Avoca, NY: family income about $50k. I'm thinking two things. lots of people are paying you in goats and hay, and podunck, Illinois where "Taryl fixes all" videos are made is like Manhattan by comparison. I keep having this recurring Twilight Zone nightmare where i get stuck there in a snowstorm and somebody on the street says, "it'll all be gone by May" . Now, There's your dinner!

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DaKineGuy says:

I've got a 2003 Miata, I pray to God that I don't have the same set up under my car if I ever need to renew the clutch….

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Larry Heebner says:

For getting off the Mazda nuts that jam on the stud: I've had good luck with cutting off 1 or 2 corners of the nut with a cutoff wheel on a die grinder or a dremel tool. Cut parallel to the stud, as close to the threads as you can. It weakens the nut and opens it up a little. Much easier than replacing a broken stud.

Wearing ear protection is smart. It gets worse after 55 when loud sounds like car alarm chirps start to become painful. You look back and wish you wore the muffs more often.

  48. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars tundramanq says:

Miata+ clutch ! Being aware of this frame box system ( a structural frame piece on this ragtop) made this a "gotta see." With a big tub of popcorn! This tyranny is the same one used on my 84 Mazda B2000 pickup, ergo the extra holes.
