This is the first video in a multi part series on replacing a clutch in a 1994 Mazda Miata MX5. The book time on the job is about 5 hours. Everything seemed to be going fine until we had to remove the rear bolts from the PPF (power plant frame) Needless to say, a little heat, a lot of air hammering, a few prayers and a can of WD40 I got them out! -Enjoy!

You just need to loosen it enough so the ppf can rotate out of the way
Actually no, the shifter is separately lubricated.
I learned to deal with rusty stuck bolts with M42 cobalt drill bits and taps.
That was one hell of a bolt. I surprised that you didn't take a sledge hammer to the whole car. That's how I felt about it. Thought it would never come out. Kudos Mr O.
By the End Of Part 1 Power Plant Frame Removed Clutch 0 lmfao ๐ good Work Eric O some jobs just go south through the entire Job @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Gorilla tape huh… guessing you haven't seen project farms videos…..
Nice job Eric. You amaze me with your patience.
You need a rust removing laser gun. They're only about 40k dollars.
another great video….most of your videos are more suspenseful than an alfred hitchkock movie….will he get the bolt out? will the housing shatter? is the killer coming back to the bathroom window? will the whole building explode and go up in as ball of flame?
Mazdas are well built cars. Fairy dust = sawzall + welder.
Damit all I needed was magic fairy dust sumbitch why am I always the last to know! ๐คฃ๐๐คฃ๐คฏ
If you heated it will expand you need to immediately pour cold water to contract then it will come out
Obviously Mazda had a better idea, too bad they didnโt use it.
mother of pearl lol. I have to use that one
Where can I order the said magic fairy dust please?
Lol. A WD40 facial! Hahaha. Great stuff Eric O.
You can work around the ppf, just leave the rear bolt in and move it over
I love how they welded on that small ramp to keep from something sheering off the bolt…little detail that most manufacturers don't do ๐
All this to change out a clutch.. I'm cured!!!
A turkey baster and a plastic carton will handle extra oil/grease.
Not been run on salted roads ever.
My niece had one of those cars, Little tiny car. Niece, not so much.
The classic reach around
I never thought that bolt would give way. Excellent work.
There's a reason there are no Miatas' in Frozen Tundra, NY. Because no one who would buy one would live there. That was your first clue to move the hell out of there. Does Amazon even deliver there? Are cokes still a nickel? What industries left there b4 the ice age came? I bet the subframe on new cars start to rust on the showroom floor. God, what a hell hole
Avoca, NY: family income about $50k. I'm thinking two things. lots of people are paying you in goats and hay, and podunck, Illinois where "Taryl fixes all" videos are made is like Manhattan by comparison. I keep having this recurring Twilight Zone nightmare where i get stuck there in a snowstorm and somebody on the street says, "it'll all be gone by May" . Now, There's your dinner!
Holy crap that crack at the end! What a bolt!
Did you just watch Rush hour? Ha ha!
I clicked this video and immediately loved it. Then I saw it's almost an hour long…. FUCK YEAH! ๐
I'm just a diyer with a lift and a torch. Understatement of the year
Man i miss my mx5!! That was such a great car!!
Use Wart remover Freeze it.
I've got a 2003 Miata, I pray to God that I don't have the same set up under my car if I ever need to renew the clutch….
For getting off the Mazda nuts that jam on the stud: I've had good luck with cutting off 1 or 2 corners of the nut with a cutoff wheel on a die grinder or a dremel tool. Cut parallel to the stud, as close to the threads as you can. It weakens the nut and opens it up a little. Much easier than replacing a broken stud.
had a 91 ranger with with a mazda 5 speed, tough trani, falling apart inside of it but kept oil in it and kept on going
โWhat is this crap?! Snow! Itโs Aprilโ
โIn New York, get over itโ
โI give upon life!โ
Lol, sorry but that was slightly better then the dedication to that bolt.
One lucky guy anyone else it would be broken
The engineers who designed that should be shot.
Stumbled across your video searching youtube in desperation of how to remove PPF ! No seized bolts on mine but I couldn't figure out how to get it off the diff. Thanks for filming this – it's been a lifesaver.
Unless you work on cars from the east coast where they use salt on roadways just shut up! It's not the same as back west.
This guy is the man !
WD facial ๐
Used to have a miata….many late nights leaving the parking garages…lifting the exit bar just enough to drive under and leave….would've paid but there were never any attendants that late at night
Derogatory Commenters comment because they canโt do.
I would have went old school with a pullbar and cheater with some heat the impacts can't compete sometimes with just basic pull power
"I'm a DIY with a lift"…….that's it, now i'm gonna save money for my own lift and call myself a pro!
Pontiac chevy oldsmobile and buick all called it a differential transmission flex frame on the monza firenza skyhawk and omega, not the nova body omega
"You know how hot mothers get." … And there's lots of other ones that got me laughin' pretty good, too. Love this guy.
Wearing ear protection is smart. It gets worse after 55 when loud sounds like car alarm chirps start to become painful. You look back and wish you wore the muffs more often.
Miata+ clutch ! Being aware of this frame box system ( a structural frame piece on this ragtop) made this a "gotta see." With a big tub of popcorn! This tyranny is the same one used on my 84 Mazda B2000 pickup, ergo the extra holes.
