In this video we replace the knocking upper rear shock mounts and rear shocks on a Ford Fusion. Be mindful knocking noise can come from other suspension components such as sway bar links and control arm bushings. So before condemning as part make sure you isolate the cause of the noise.

Alot better design than the previous gen fusion.
why not the bilstein sπ
Thanks Mr O, just about to do the rear shocks on my Mondeo (Fusion in USA) so nice to see it was uncomplicated and nice point about the nut and angled mount
Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 ford fusion and I need to replace the upper shock mounts and shocks because of the clunking noise coming from the back. This explains why. Never think these videos are not worth it. They are very valuable.
Thank you for the information on the video….
I came here to watch how to change my rear shocks. I hit the thumbs up because your wife is adorable. If you can do it, I can do it!
i changed only rear shock in my ford fusion 2014 not the MOUNT ,it feels perfectly fine over bumps but tapping NOICE tuk tuk noice has started after replacement of shock, do i need to change MOUNT now ?
"Everybody's FLIPPPIN' out!"
A real life RedGreen, just needs duck tape now!
Exact same make and model I am about to do. But I don't have a fancy lift or 3/8 impact, so it's the low tech method for me!
You wanted to show that even in NY an easy job can on rare occasion actually be easy.
And just imagine if you were stuck in a parking lot, in the snow, without triple a!! That's why I change ALL my lugs, and go to a one piece!!
When this cars a rockin don't come a knocking, thats all I could think of first few seconds of this video haha.
Need to do this same repair.. Glad you already had a video showing how easy it was. Love the channel!
Personality alone will get you a sub. I'm about ready to do my wife's shocks and struts on her 14 Fusion. I don't know why in the hell Ford puts that crap cap over the lug nuts.. I bought a 19 F150 and am going to change the lug nuts soon.
NOT sure why you posted this Vid ? cuz these things are a PROBLEM….i.e.: my kid's 2015 Edge has a slightly diff mounting on the bottom . This will help me get through it ! thanks….Solid Vid…great help. thanks again sir !
Hallo. I have a Mondeo mk5, ST Line, 2017 Hatchback, 28000km. They say St line with sports shock and is 10mm lower. How can i improve the comfort of the back? Replacing the shock absorber? Advice? Recommendation?
Thanks in advance.
Still a good video
I just got done about 20mins ago with this exact job on a 2016 Fusion with about 60k on it. I'll throw in some extra tips for you guys.
Some people have addressed the lug nuts here already, I'll go a bit further. If they are not too jacked up, hammer on a 19mm, make sure the dumb chrome cap is lined up with the nut, you'll see what I mean if it starts spinning on you. Take them off, afterwards, take a die grinder with a small disc and cut 3 notches in the ring around cap, put it in a vise, get a screwdriver and hammer and chisel the edges off. Turn it around in the vise and pop the cap off with your screwdriver. They are now a solid 18mm lug. Throw those stupid things in the scrap bin.
I have never heard of anyone having to replace shocks after 60k miles or anywhere near that, so we decided to purchase the mounts which was around $100. I'm sure these could go bad with more miles, but the ones on the car I worked on were not bad. I replaced them anyway since the customer bought them. So where was the problem with the particular one that I worked on? It was the nut that came loose on the driverside shock. Probably could have tightened this up while the shock was on the car, but I do recommend taking the shock off because it's very easy to do and for a couple other reasons.
I turned the shock upside down in my vise and turned the 15mm with a wrench. It appeared that the plastic threadlock on the nut had kind of worn out and the nut loosened a bit. Personally I threw some blue threadlocker on it, tightened it to all hell in the vise and called it a day. If I were to do this again, I would say the best thing to do is to get new lock nuts for the shocks and/or get a correct sized lock washer on there, add some threadlocker as well, tighten her down. Anything from keeping that sucker from loosening up again.
I used the blue threadlocker on all the bolts. Not sure what the torque specs, I felt it out. Did 50-55fts on the lower bolts(I thought 55 was kind of pushing it), and did 70-75ft lbs on the top two bolts. The shock nut you can't really torque so just tighten it down, you may even want to dab a tiny bit of oil onto the bottom of that shock nut were it meets the mount bushing, just so it can spin a little bit more.
The dealership was going to charge this woman $500 to replace the shocks, maybe the mounts too(not sure)? When all it was was a silly loosened nut.
Bonus: Uncle just retired from Ford last year, I won't tell you what he says about them, but he does tell everyone he knows to buy Toyota
Video starts..uh Eric…Mrs O…camera is rolling..
Loose nut on top of my shock was my noise problem.
I just had struts put on my 2017 MKZ cause there was a "crunchy" sound coming from the rear and the swaybar was replaced supposedly, but im still hearing the sound, but not as much, but hearing it still nonetheless! What could be causing that sound?
Helped me out shock didn't have the bump stop. Glad you decided to post this video
This video was very helpful and I can't wait to replace my baby shocks.. Thank God I only have to replace 1 and both… And since this is my first d.i.y fix Is it a good idea to go ahead and replace both rare shocks or will I be ok with just replacing the 1?
Yep another crusty ford
Any fusion owners hearing a clunk in the rear of their fusions. The noise is coming from the nut at the top of the shock. All you need to do is tighten it. I had it develop at like 60k miles, thought i needed new shocks. Just realized the top nut was loose causing the noise, give it a good snug and it wont knock. Use a pair of vice grips to hold the stud from spinning with the nut, since it wont tighten if the stud spins with the nut. It happened on both left and right rear. Just realize itll re loosen itself over time, i noticed it happens usually in the fall and spring times with temp change.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 13 fusion and apparently this is a notorious problem for the model.
Thank you so much for posting this video!
Throw lug nuts in the trash immediately that is the first thing I do with any of those type of low-grade lug nuts…
So I did this and now they squeak… replaced the mounts too
Great video, man! Now I know how easy it is.
Thanks from Brazil.
Actually I'm glad you did post it. My wife's 2013 had the same noise but on the drivers side. I tore half the car interior apart trying to find out where it was coming from since it resonated inside the trunk wheel well. I was certain it was coming from there. Finally decided to jack the car up, took the wheel (that some idiot had air gunned on to about 300 lb-ft forcing me to destroy those stupid lug caps) off then removed the plastic wheel well covering. Shook the car and through a process of elimination finally figured out it was the stupid shock mount. Simple repair once I figured out where the noise was coming from but wasted hours locating the noise.
What year is you car sr?
Is of same for 2006 /2009 ford fusion. Sr??
with my dealing with those swollen lugs on a daily bases, i use the 19.5mm to break them loose then spin them off with a 20mm. and when their really swollen i hammer on the 19.5mm, sometimes the caps break off and sometimes they go back into shape
We call that a Jhook in our industry. We use them on wood utility poles to hold up guy wire or random telephone wires slung across the place.
Super helpful video, thanks. If you hadn't made the video nobody would believe that J hook thing was stuck in the wheel well like it was π
Do you have a part # for these items? I'm having a difficult time finding the brace, I can only find the strut itself
wow totally could do this myself and i never worked on a car in my life.
need one of those tool guns he had π
I bought all new lug nuts – its a known issue … Ford didn't stand behind their POS product
Locktite on the top bolt, threads flattened in the vice. That's not coming off except on purpose.
Hey this was super helpful!! I had some clunking in the back end and this was exactly it I knocked it out really quick with this. THANKS
Damn sheβs super cute
Guys thank you, this video made doing the job at home on my wifes car a damn sight easier.
Really appreciate this video sir, helped me along the way with my mystery clunking noise in the back!
there a lot of great videos out there including this one but you always leave out the most important information which also deals with safety issues let alone proper fitment and that is Nut and bolt torque specifications.
If anyone can answer this for me so I understand itβs a shock for some reason on my 16 fusion I was thinking it was an axle as I was thinking it was rwd and it just dawned that fwd donβt have axles in the rear but anyway. The silver pin in the axle if I newly purchased shocks and mounts does that come with it? I would upload a pic of it but canβt. Looking to buy parts for a repair to lessen the cost. Thanks
ππππππ he also said "Go figure.. stinkin dig dongers!!!"πππππ
Nice video. Did you have to set the car to riders height before torquing down all the bolts? Do it not matter in some cases.
