In this video we have a look at a 2003 Chevrolet Impala that keeps throwing a P0332. It did not take long to discover the fact that the car had been "touched" a few times. The scope shows the truth though. The knock signal was picking up secondary ignition and raising heck with signal. The vehicle was ran under code setting criteria several times after repair and then a full drive cycle after repair to verify fix. -Enjoy!
DTC P0327 or P0332
Circuit Description
The knock sensor (KS) diagnostic circuitry is contained within the powertrain control module (PCM). The KS produces an AC voltage at all engine speeds and at loads. The PCM adjusts spark timing that is based on the amplitude and on the frequency of the KS signal. The PCM uses the KS signal in order to calculate the average voltage. Then the PCM assigns a voltage value. The PCM inspects the KS and related wiring by comparing the actual knock signal to the assigned voltage range. A normal KS signal should stay outside the assigned voltage range. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will set if the KS signal is within the assigned voltage range, or if the KS signal is not present . DTC P0327 refers to the bank 1 KS and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0332 refers to bank 2 KS.

I have this issue but both are throwing the code and the car runs smooth.
Ohhhhh the wires weren't shielded… I was wondering why a knock sensor would have that kind of pattern
Having lived in Broome County, I recognize the nasty road condition. You could almost hear the car rusting! Another great vid Eric.
I would have done exactly as you said. Pulled that thing right back out the door. Thats how ass hats set you up and make their problem, your fault. All for trying to be the nice guy and trying to help someone out.
I've watching this video thinking to myself that you are accelerating and driving way to fast in the snowy conditions…I then realize I'm watching at 1.5 playback speed.
That Wiring Is A Disaster… 🛠😂
Man I am always happy to find an older SMA video that I didn't smash the like button… means I never watched it! Gonna enjoy this one!
Very distracted driving smh but nonetheless interesting vid
Why does my 2003 Impala BCM die every few years? I had a new one put in and programmed at the dealer and it died again.
You gotta love that…"I don't ask anymore…", thanks for this post, I enjoyed AND learned from this vid, liked and subscribed, this is the first of your vids I've seen, I picked up an 05 Impala through a good friend at work with a lot of life left in it (mostly highway miles) and i can't tell you what a blessing it is for folks who cant afford a professional (all the time) to be able to do some of these things themself, Thank you again sir and greetings from Jacksonville, FLA.
Running both at half speed I could think of a few reasons. Less noise and vibration. Less surge draw on alternator causing less idle fluctuation (better idle drivability) due to alternator output response. Two low fans pull more uniform air over larger cross section of radiator.
I got the p0332 code on my 06 range rover 4.4l and there's no other wires around it. Could the knock sensor be bad?
I appreciate your video! Had the same issue on an 09 Impala and the same fix worked.
Eric, I don't get it! WHY would someone go in trying to fix stuff, then leave an unholy MESS behind like that? It takes just a few minutes to tidy up, and it makes your troubleshooting harder! JEESH
You, sir, are a very talented individual.
I had same type of problem. My main drivers side fan would not come on when temps make it should turn on. Passenger side was OK. All I did was hook a wire to a switch inside car then manually turned it on or off. I did not care if it was the right way but it serves my purpose instead of paying out tons of money to fix like the chevy dealer wanted. Most independents did not want to touch it at the time with most saying after checking out the system that it was the ecm.
The important thing is, you fixed it.
I remember that that other car with the MAF problem. Great video again, keep the good work.
Lovin the open plan aspect of that loom 😉
Bet it was getting GREAT mpg's!?
Great work Eric !
Don't be so quick to beat up on the poor folks, sometimes the economic first option is to try to fix it yourself.
Did you find mickey mouse in that nest?
Many great things about this channel but I have a lot of respect for the fact you take the time to share a lot of the issues that you come across with electrical, now all modern vehicles run mostly off electronics the complicated issues will arise and with your great experience and knowledge that you express into your videos will teach many, I’m 19 and have been working with my dad at home with cars for a long time now, lapping valves for a 5.3L GM engine at 10 years old and doing a engine replacement at 17 and much more has taught me to help people and not be selfish, if someone doesn’t have a lot of money and needs work just do it and get the oem grade parts off rockuto and save them money and don’t charge an arm and a leg allows people who couldn’t afford to take their vehicle to shop can now reply on the budget vehicle they may be stuck with. Thanks for the great content and hard work and wish I had the funds to donate towards your hard work, believe me if I could I would! If I have a million dollars I would give you half, anyways thanks mr. and mrs. O
What a pile.. Sometimes I think you are too nice Eric. Some techs would pop the hood and say nope and call the customer to come pick up their car.
Looks like every single car that friends and relatives just happen to stop by look like.
Looks like another L36 BBQ is around the corner.
Train Wreck? This one wasn’t my fault!
it looks like the mouse has been working over time on that poor car
decent fan setup really, eliminates resistors which wastes power and provides air flow to whole radiator and condenser at low or high velocity. which is far better for A/C pressure control among other things.
'everything is good except the road and other people driving' – eric o
I'm guessing with all the resistance in his wiring loom, they just removed the covering to let the wires breathe a little and cool off…. I mean, that'll slow down the fuse poppin', right? Cooling fan breakdown put the brakes on that though lol
Dear Eric O! I decided to rewire my "Chivey", and removed all of the wires at the same time, instead of one at a time!! I used different colored wires, and different style connectors, and now when I turn on my right turn signal, the horn blows on my 96 Acura integra, and my next door neighbors porch lights blink!! Tell me how to fix this for free, and I heard the doorbell again!! UNSUBSCRIBING!! But I'll wait til after the answer, this time!!
P.S. I don't know what year, or model it is, but it's blue, with a gray interior, and either a V6 or a V8. And aluminum wheels!!
P.P.S. There is no junk in the floor boards, but my neighbor and I are loading it up as we speak!! Can't have you talking about working on a car without junk in the trunk!!
Sounds like Mrs. Molly has the Romper Room going in there- time to hand out the Benadryl and blankets for all.
so Doodle the Noodle worked on the car huh
$2.73 for fuel?
I the only thing more chaotic than those wires are the children screaming and playing in the background. Lol!
Actually the two speed cooling fan system without resistor is pretty smart idea. Resistors gets hot and hot things tend to fail. I am curious about how the ecm knows the failed fan circuit? There is no feedback circuit on the diagram which Eric showed us.
Yep its been touched alright lol
Looks like a Shade Tree Mechanic motor swap!
… i've always used Berryman's fuel treatment ( usually once a month or 6 weeks ) & i'm still driving a 91 dakota that i bought new… it's the only reason i can think of why it's still running. What's your choice of fuel cleaners ?
I have a problem with a 2010 Ford Mustang v6. I was driving and randomly died while driving. Pulled over and gave the battery a jump and nothing checked fuses and nothing but I noticed that I couldn’t even put it in N it stayed in park. Plus my theft lock light is on and doesn’t crank at all. And when I try to crank it, my blinkers go off and the theft lock light also & my interior lights stay on. Please help!!!!
Unfortunately a lot of ppl cant afford a nice car, and maintain it
Conditions needed to be met to have Eric O. work on your car:
1) Must be a rusty piece of shit. THAT'S A GIVEN.
2) Preferably hacked up by the owner or a previous shop.
3) The owner has to barely be getting by as evidence from the condition of their car/truck. No Yuppies here in Avoca folks.
4) Interior of the car/truck must look like a well used dumpster.
I enjoy seeing the snow…. up North. 70 degrees in Tennessee today.
You are the MAN! I really like the intelligent way you attack these problems. A $5000 Snap-On scope helps, but without the sense to know what the scope is telling you, the scope is a paperweight. 😅 A regular oscilloscope would also show the IF the code scanner had live data to narrow the search. I'm shocked that GM did not shield these wires. I worked on the early GM ECMs in the 1980s and all signal wires were shielded with foil. Guess that got too expensive, or make the harnesses too fat. As you say, at 50K volts for the ignition wires, maybe it would have not have made a difference.
Thoughly enjoy your videos, Brings back memories of persons hack-mastering I remember ,truly a family man with children in background!!
My diagnosis for this was the same I make with most ShivOlays-where's an engine fire when you need one?
Your kids are animals
Lol
